Looks like the transformer mounting with the many holes in a circle, is so the mounting orientation can be set during production. The transformer would be orientated for minimum hum induction. Toroidal transformers usually just require a single central hole for the mounting bolt to go through.

When my parents upgraded their living room listening environment in 1984, from Grandpa's Grundig Majestic hi-fi console to components, they bought this particular deck! As I was just developing an interest in audio at 14, reading Stereo review and other contemporary publications, I was memserized by the inclusion, on this deck, of a real time spectro-gram! Along with the standard record levels, left and right, all in LED. I'm sure quite ahead of its time for such instrumentation. Later on, I'm sure the demand for dubbing overrode all this panazz, and that space on the front of the unit would become occupied by a second tape well, with a more compact recording level meter along the top or off to one side. By the turn of decade(1990s), the 'dumbing down' of consumer cassette decks, with just the bare minimum of metering, and functions such as NR(noise reduction), was sadly in full bore.

I have one. Got it for ten bucks from a guy selling on the street. I think it's not to bad of a deck. I have a hundred cassettes and I would play them on this deck.
