The San Francisco 49ers came back from a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit, but two controversial penalties and a late field goal helped the Washington Redskins reach a second consecutive Super Bowl.
V12 as a kid, I remember him throwing deep (and accurate) plenty of times. But people definitely remember the Niners for the short passing game, (west coast offense).
Sitting here in a parking lot in Florida watching this feeling a bit homesick, or at least reminiscing back to my childhood in Rockville, Maryland. Great times watching the Redskins with family in the 80's and 90's. The area I grew up in has changed so much, the Redskins don't even exist anymore. They can't take away the memories though.
I'm watching this in the other sunshine territory that Major League Baseball training also is in where the Super Bowl will be this year in Glendale, Arizona in a few weeks. Born in Springfield. Lived in Georgetown for 3 years, but 2 years in Montgomery County were the best! (Well tied with the DC days)
I remember watching this game & had forgotten about those bad late calls that went against the 49ers. The following year the 49ers would use this loss as fuel to go 15-1 enroute to winning their 2nd of 4 Super Bowls during the 80s.
I actually wish the Redskins had lost this game given how badly they played in SB XVIII. Those two penalties against the 49ers on that last Redskins drive were very questionable. I don't think either one of them should have been called. The officials might as well have determined the outcome, which is the last thing you want to see in a game where so much is at stake.
@@G0Chiefs Plus the Redskins were the better team that year. And a true candidate for one of the best teams that didn't win the Super Bowl. Also, Raiders suck(The only thing that you Chiefs fans and us Bronco fans can agree on, apparently).
@@G0Chiefs Skins partied a bit too much during that super bowl week. A few skins mentioned it and Howie long said during pregame of the superbowl the raiders were bouncy and amped while the skins look like they were dragging. Explains a whole lot (also Allen & Haynes were not around for the first game too) lol
Bill Keogh: Truth. Pat Summerall and John Madden were awesome! Man, I have so many fond memories of Sunday afternoon games in the 1980s and 1990s. Hell, I'm always on You-Tube replaying them! :)
Mark Moseley was 1 for 5 in field goals. All misses from under 40 yards. Redskins completely dominated 49ers. Even with 4th quarter comeback this game would not have been close if he made any of them.
@@rcviolet6 This was the point that many 49ers fans appreciated. Their team didn't give up and tied the game in the 4th quarter no matter if the Redskins had let up or Moseley missed a ton of FGs, it just didn't look like they had any chance at all. Several thousand 49er fans met the team when they came back to SF airport that night. Many 49er players said this was one of the reasons they were so amped up for next season when they ended up 18-1 and winning the Super Bowl. They also soundly beaten the Redskins on Monday Night.
That would've been so cool to see the 49ers against Raiders in Superbowl 18. But after watching how indomitable the Raiders were that year, I'm sure they would've won still. But the niners would've made it more entertaining than the embarrassing Redskins.
Damn what great times for the redskins franchise . I wish I could see that happen one more time before I die . I was a 7 years old back then and I remember that game but I want to see the skins make it happen now that im grown so I can throw a party
Maybe our team has a chance now! Ownership changes hands from Snyder and that is EVERYTHING! Signing off, 1973 dude who witnessed these glory days every week back then
As a skins fan that lost to the Raiders to this day is the most embarrassing and devastating lose as a sports fan. That 1983 teams was a machine and it seemed after that first half against the 49ers they couldn't do anything in the 2nd half which carried over to the raiders. Dudes partied too much from what was reported.
@M that's why United states is # one you foot fetish freak....football is a man's game played by warriors... Soccer is a boring game played by 2nd rate atheletes....checkers an chess my friend...your soccer players if they are lucky enuff might get a job as a kicker in football...but even women can do that...
I was at that game with my parents and sister. We took the Metro to the game. I remember there was a 49ers fan on the train going back who was in tears at the loss. Of course, we embarrassed ourselves in the Super Bowl against the Raiders after that. Still hoping that Washington can come back as a real competitor again.
People really whine about the late call -- which, yeah, was bad. We've seen much worse since on way more pivotal plays. A horrid day by Moseley was the only thing that prevented a Redskins blowout win. The Redskins were the better team. End of story.
Redskins were clearly the better team, but the last few minutes of the game it was 21-21. Only the bogus penalties kept the Redskins drives alive. Mind you the 49ers scored 21 unanswered points and the offense and Montana was hot. I would trade this loss so the 49ers win the SB the next year, and they went 18-1, and smacked the Redskins on Monday Night
2 shit penalty calls that cost the Niners a shot at Super Bowl #6 (2nd at the time). You just know Jerry Markbreit had money on the 'Skins. Walsh was beside himself after the game. Needless to say. PI criteria has changed since then. The Redskins got their comeuppance against the Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII.
+John B Don't hate, you can easily look at it as Moseley single handily kept SF in the game. Even if he hits 3 of 5 FG's its a two score game but this highlight reel would prefer to focus on the penalties rather than his missed FG's. Don't blame the refs.. You shouldn't have been in the game in the first place.. #perspective
2nd penalty wasn't all that relevant because they were already in FG range. Of course Moseley had missed 4 FGA already so maybe he'd miss 5. we could also look at it that the game wasn't really that close. 4 chip shot field goals missed means it probably should have been a 10+ game.
ArtMonkforHallofFame yes it was relevant. It was a 3rd down play just around the 2 minute warning, the penalty allowed a fresh set of downs and more time off the clock.. those few extra seconds could've been likely 2-4 additional plays .. enough to get SF into FG range possibly at the gun.
The first penalty looked iffy, but the 2nd one seemed like a right call. It was pretty blatant. Anyway, the guy who said Moseley kept the 49ers in the game is right. Had he made 3 out of 4 FGs, the Redskins would have led 30-0 entering 4th quarter, too much even for Montana.
for all their underperformance / mistakes in this game, this was a superb Washington team that advanced to the Superbowl, 14 and 2 record, on paper better than the year before, on paper the best they ever fielded. The Raiders mulched that paper hardcore.
Raiders did there homework. Pretty much said, Riggins wasn't going to beat us. They put there linebackers right up in the gaps so no big holes could be opened. Also Thiesmann had a horrible first half. Special teams was as bad, blocked punt, blocked extra point. I loved Joe Gibbs but, I just didn't understand why he would have a tight end go up the hash marks to make the linebackers back off and play honest. They picked the wrong day to have a bad day in the super bowl. Taking nothing away from the Raider's they kicked there butt's otherwise but, the '83 Skin's we're better than that.
Sean Mitchem nowhere near the play, within 5 yards and the receiver seemed to have given up on the play anyway... they were just slowing down together... such BS.
@@seankeys5384 Yeah it was on him. It was also the 49ers fault they didn't play well throughout the rest of the game so it doesn't come down to those bad calls.
@@MRInvincible569 what are you talking about those flags came late in the game, and who fault was it that mosley kept choking,it left a bad taste in my mouth against the so called hogs but if you've been following football you know the 49ers after that game had the skins in check most of there meetings after that including knocking them out of the playoffs TWICE!!but we're HATERS? yeah right.
Can you even believe there was actually an era when the NFL wanted Washington to go to the SB rather than SF? This was the last game that Washington got the benefit of a close call. It's gone against them for 40 yrs
These 2 teams have won super bowls 80's and 90's and the penalty that helped Redskins defeat 49ers but they would play Monday night football at San Francisco 1984 and San Francisco 49ers would beat Washington Redskins 37-31 and defeated Dan Marino and Miami Dolphins at Palo Alto near San Francisco 38-16 and Roger Craig scored 3 touchdowns while Joe Montana super bowl mvp.
The sad thing is the game wouldn't have been this close if Mosley didn't miss 4 straight field goals. He would blame the RFK turf on this which in January was just pure mud. There was no grass when it came winter time especially when it rained. In the 91 divisional round against Atlanta, the Redskin kicker Chip Lohmiller missed CLOSE multiple field goals because the RFK turf was essentially mud. You couldn't plant your feet. Well the 49ers used this loss as a catalyst and go 15-1 and win the Super Bowl the next year. The 49ers OWNED and I mean OWNED the Redskins for years after this loss. In 1986, the 49ers beat the Redskins and in 1988. In 1990, the 49ers dominated the Redskins in the divisional round. The 49ers again beat the Redskins in the divisional round in 1992.
The Bucs did to the Raiders what they did to the Redskins - scoring quick points off turnovers and special team play. I watched the SB XVIII recently - the Raiders weren't that dominant until 4th quarter when the Redskins seemed to give up. Big plays carried them. Still, they were the better team that day - kudos to them.
@@DiddyKatt lol..seriously the Redskins were 28-3 over the past 2 years going into that superbowl. The 2 games they lost in 83 were by 1 point each and they broke the season scoring record that year and held it for 15 years. They more than belonged there.
Footage was so entertaining. Could've enjoyed more defensive plays if they existed in the game, but entertaining none the less. Also, Ronnie Lott got burned in one of those early plays lol
Honestly, some of the worst calls in the history of the NFL at the end of this game. Redskins did not deserve the win. The video highlighted it and you could hear the disgust in Madden’s voice.
+Beast 1 of 2 you may be right but when you have to cheat to win you're automatically dropped from that conversation regardless if he has 10 SB wins. Cheaters are LOSERS maybe not on the field but in life. He has to live with that.
One of the worst officiated conference championship games I can remember. Markbreit and that crew appeared as if they were not going to allow the 49ers to win, at any cost.
They lost Dwight Clark on the last game of the season too although Mike Wilson got 2 TD catches in his place. I believe Redskins killed the Rams 51-3 or something the week before. I was surprise by the end of the game the 49ers tied it 21-21 until the 2 bogus penalty calls that gave the Redskins close enough position for a field goal.
to think montana could've got the 49ers to 6 super bowls in a 10 year timespan if not for the roger craig fumble in 1990 and the calls at the end of this game
+MM455x back in the day all kickers were straight on instead of side/soccer-style. Moseley, I think, was the last one of that dying breed. He was MVP of the league the year before. He was that good. But he had an AWFUL day that day v. SF. 4 missed chipshots.
Washington football team Remember we have beating the best in the NFL WE Can do again we need to play together as the a team now we are the Commando the new Washington Commando 🏋
Horrible call wasn't PI n ball was uncatchable anyway n the other call was just as bad wasn't holding n it occurred within the 5 yard rule n that WR was even the the one joe was throwing too 49ers got robbed n should have won that game n would have beaten the Raiders n got another SB title cause Joe Montana doesn't loose super bowls period!
Robert Corralejo I don't think so dawg... But Montana in Super Bowls was money... It sure would of been a better SB than when my Raiders annihilated the hogs
I really wish the niners had won. Guarantee that Montana would have put up a better fight than the deadskins did against Oakland. I really always liked Theismann, but he was NO Montana. Not even close. Joe would have ensured that the niners play a much competitive game than the Deadskins played in SB 18.
First call was BS, second was good, Joe Montana was amazing, so sad the Raiders won the Super Bowl. That's basically everything I think about this game.
Down 21-0 Joe lead an incredible comeback only to be thwarted by the refs. Stole a ring from thee GOAT w not one but two horrible calls. RFK home job during a time the nations capital needed a win in every aspect.
Those are two of the worst calls I’ve ever seen in my life. Good thing I was only 7 when this game was played. Or I would have personally gone to DC and kicked the ref’s a$$.
you never hear about this game , but i remember it . it was a big deal at the time , those two penalty bs calls . the ball was uncatchable on the first play .
That was not pass interference terrible terrible car terrible terrible officiating you don’t make that call in a game like that there was no pass interference !who was going to catch the ball somebody in the stands
