I loved my 85' MK II Supra. She was a wonderful traveling companion. Surprisingly practical car with a lot of fun touches. Those wheel flairs and the hatchback updates of that model year solidly upgraded her looks. The stock wheels (note the 4 bolt pattern) have always looked great. The little grey work light in the engine compartment, for a practicality example, unscrews from its mount and has a built in extension cord so you can maneuver it around the engine bay. That power sunroof was bulletproof. Never leaked a drop when closed. Vastly more convenient than than my later MKIII's leaky Targa Top. Also, though a collector wouldn't use it for this, she was a true hatchback. Fold down the rear seats and she became a little truck. Super fun.

An uncle bought one of these new, in that beautiful metallic blue/blue interior. I remember it was pretty much state of the art tech at the time. To this day, I believe this is the one car he really misses.

I just bought an ‘85, high miles and the paint is shot, but it’s the two tone blue and silver, and I like it for what it is. I’m glad I could come here and have Steve affirm my decision!

I had a Supra identical to that one. Mine was an 83. Only real differences were the door handles and a few interior pieces. I loved that car. It loved the freeway and the high speed twisties.

This is my exact dream car, A 1985 black Toyota Supra with a 5 speed . I would absolutely be thrilled to own this vehicle.

So beautiful! Bought this same model and color in late 84. Looks like crap now, even under a carport, but still runs. At least 2-3 times a year, the doorbell rings because someone’s wanting to buy it. Nope! I knew I bought a gem when I bought it. Talking with restorers to bring it back to its former self!

Bought one new in 82 I believe they called it the Dan Gurney special... Super quiet fun to drive and quick I remember the headrests would ratchet and driver's side lumbar...

Nice comments from everyone......I bought this car last November, 2022 from High Octane. They had dropped the price down to 35 K and I got it for 32K. It is everything I expected and more.....I had originally owned another '85 and still had a '81, which I used as a trade-in. The '85 was and is my all-time favorite Supra. It's in storage right now but come May 1st it will be back on the road!

I had a 1982 Celica GTS back in 87. I loved that car. It had the supra interior and wheels, black package etc. But only a 22r 4 banger. Slow but awesome interior and handling.

My RAV4.1 avatar proves I've been highly involved with "Calty" Tech Toyota's. No respect for Cam and and Conquer no easy way to Service philosophy, but they are reliable before headgaskets and servicing parts are required. Long may they live...Thanks Steve

Love your videos Steve, one little knit to pick though, the 2.8L 5MGE is definitely a DOHC engine, but unfortunately it's still only two valves per cylinder, not four. The four-valve head came later on the 3.0L 7MGE.
@mescko
@mescko 2 года назад
Not necessarily a bad thing. The 2-valve design would likely offer more torque lower in the rev range, and a few essential bits off the 7MGTE would yield considerably more bhp.

A true treasure from my high school days. I has a 71 datsun 510, that I still have and a 76 mercury Capri 2.8 4spd. People really turn heads when I pull them out.

A high school chum got one of these. Engine was so smooth. Extremely refined versus the early Datsun Z, but never had that visceral feel. The trade off.

Couple corrections. While the 5MGE did have dual cams, it was only 2 valves per cylinder, for a total of 12. Also, the P-type WAS available with an automatic; a buddy of mine has an automatic '85 P. The L was not available in '85.

Nice. If you find one can you do a video on the Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler Conquest? Along with the Supra, they were excellent performers from Japan.
@roberthartmaier6643
@roberthartmaier6643 5 месяцев назад
Have to add a few corrections to Steve's "facts". The hp was 161, not 170. Only 2 valves per cylinder, not 4. As of 1985, the "L" version was no longer available. An auto tranny was indeed available as an option on the "P" version. The spoiler on the hatch was standard, not an option.

I had this year Celica GT … red rocket .. had the steelies and beauty rings … remember the 3 rack stereo ?? Loved that car , it loved to run fast .. And mine wanted to be a Supra soooo bad …

There was an 'in-between' model, the Celica GTS which was the shorter-wheelbase Celica with the 22RE 4-pot but with the flares, Supra wheels and rear disc IRS. I had a silver/grey '85 GTS, lovely car. Never should have sold it or my blue/blue '85 Supra, which I got for a song since it wouldn't pass the local sniffer test which I didn't have to pass in my locality. The Supra was beautifully balanced and could charge through backroad esses at highly illegal speeds. If I still had either they would be packing 1UZ's now.

I think you may be wrong on saying the Celicas had live rear axle and the Supra having independent as my RA65 Celica of 1984 which my wife bought new has the same independent rear end as the Supra and here in Australia its the 2.4i XT liftback version I know that the coupes with a boot lid had live in base 2.0 models but Youse over there also had the GTS with flares and the 7”rims and I think you will find those 4 pot cars had IRS too

The Celica GT had a live axle. The Celica GTS had the IRS. Check the power steering reservoir. The name TOYODA should be stamped on it, the founders actual name. It was on my 84 Celica.

The first year GTS was not actually badged as such (I had one, an '82) it did not have the IRS.

I'm always hearing lotus designed this & lotus designed that....for what seems like every other car manufacturer in existence. Was business so bad for them with their own cars that they had to design everyone else's stuff to make payroll on Friday? I know probably a dozen people with cars that have "Lotus" engineering but not one person that owns an actual Lotus car!!!
@mescko
@mescko 2 года назад
They had an engineering arm (still do) that did mainly suspension development work for other manufacturers as diverse as Lotus and Isuzu.

I owned both an '84 Supra and a '78 280Z 2+2 at the same time. While the specs make the cars look comparable, they were anything but. The Supra was a true Grand Touring car with all the space, comfort and performance you could want given what was available at that time. The Z was clearly 25 yo technology that had been stretched to improve its utility. The Supra was an open, airy, comfortable, quiet GT. The Z was narrow, cramped, dark and rattley. Put it this way, once I got the Supra I would drive the Z only when the Supra wasn't available (e.g. maintenance) or there was snow on the ground (the Supra was possibly the scariest low traction car I've ever owned)
