Willie Gault ran a 10.9 s 100 meter at the age of 50. When converting between 100 yard and 100 meter dashes, it comes out to essentially the same time he ran in this race.
me too, and took them just as seriously as nehemiah. you wouldn't believe me watching the battle of the sexes. "they can't handicap the guys that much!"
Respect to NFL players. The only athletes who come anywhere close to track sprinters for the sprints (60 - 400m). Rugby, Aussie rules, baseball, ‘soccer’ and others all rely on predicted times based on how they look on the field or how they remember high school 100m hand times (nonsense times). You need to train sprinting in order to complete the distances in exceptional times. Holding a ball / no formal sprint mechanics training / adapting to direction changing, heavy surface grass running etc all make them slower than track athletes.
"record" -- give me a break. these were the worst-run sprint events in the history of fake track. constant uncalled false starts and hand-timing. in this video alone, willie gault runs down lofton -- one of the fastest players of all time -- and lofton false started by a whole second! darrell green wasn't as fast as gault, either.
I remember watching the "NFL's Fastest Man" competition in the late 80's, don't recall exactly what year though. Anyway, Darrel Green ended up winning it against the likes of guys like Hershel Walker, Willie Gault, etc. Amazing how fast Green was considering he was only 5'8, or 5'9". To beat Willie Gault was a feat in itself, because that guy was just super-man fast. Still is for his age. From watching this video, it appears that Gault doesn't get out of the gates as quick as a few of the others, but then catches and passes them down the stretch. Getting out of the gates quick is the key to winning a sprinting event, especially against equal competition. It's too bad the Bears weren't able to get Gault the ball more back then. They were crippled with the QB situation though. I think if Gault could have started his career with a team like the 49ers or Dolphins (Montana or Marino at QB), then Gault would have probably made a much better legacy for himself in the NFL. I remember him just blowing by defensive backs on straight fly patterns down the sideline. He wouldn't even put a double move on them or anything. Just run right by them like they were standing still.
The Map Maker I agree with everything you said except for one thing: Herschel Walker beat Darrell Green in the 100 yard dash - twice I believe (I only saw him do it once but everyone on RU-vid swears this was done twice, which I have no reason to doubt).
The taller you are the faster you are? No, it doesn't work that way. If that was the case then NBA centers would be the fastest guys on the planet@@joeblough261
Nehemiah wasn't training for the race. He ran a 19.4 split for 200 meters in the 4x200 at the Penn Relays. And his 13.00 that he ran as a sophomore still stands as the NCAA record.
Nehemiah didn't train for 100 because he could run a lot faster than 9.9 for 100 yards. He split a 19.4 in the 200 in a 4x200 at the Penn Relays in 1979. And his 13.00 for 110m hurdles still stands as the NCAA record.
dont forget his 12.93 world record that stood for some time..even now its a very rare performance. he never reached his potential. he could still be the WR holder today, in 2019 if he had seen his track career through..
A couple of the superstars I would have liked to see do the 100 yard dash would have been Daryl Green,Dione Sanders, & Bo Jackson. The two fastest I think from football #1 would have been Bob Hayes (world record holder & world champion in 100) next Javhid Best he actually made Olympic team in one of the Islands this past Olympics.
In 1987, Darrell Green ran a 9.5 to finish second behind Herschel Walker's 9.37. In 1990, Deion Sanders, who was not nearly as fast as many people think he was, ran a 10.2 to finish third behind Willie Gault, who won in 9.60, and Flipper Anderson. Jahvid Best ran for St. Lucia in Rio, his personal best at 100 meters is 10.31 from 2007, there are a ton of NFL players who ran faster than that in college.Johnny "Lam" Jones was a wide receiver for the Jets who ran a 10.27 finishing 6th at the 1976 Olympics and also won a gold medal as part of the relay team.
westnyacktwins there's a difference some of those 100-yard dash is not meters which they ran it looks like better times Jahvid Best this time was 10.16 in the hundred meters which he needed to be able to run that to qualify to go to the Olympics which he accomplished
He did not run the qualifying time for the Olympics, hence he was in the first round heats, whereas the seeded runners advanced directly to the quarterfinals. Each nation is allowed to enter one male and one female athlete in track and field if they do not have any athletes that met a qualifying standard, most countries enter that one athlete in the 100 meters as was the case with Best. As far as the Superstars is concerned, they ran on asphalt with sneakers, no spikes, but the times were hand held times, not automatic timing which is generally about two-tenths of a second faster, on average.
Jahvid wasn't THAT fast; he was not a world-class sprinter. He went to the Olympics, because he was representing a small country with little competition. I could probably represent them in taekwondo - even in my 40s - if I lost some weight ;) Okay, I am exaggerating, but you get my point.
+seattwa Yes, but he was a 110m meter hurdles champion. By definition, that should in the very least make you VERY fast without hurdles........logical ?
@@Mr.56Goldtop he was at one time a 110m hurdle world record holder. You take out the hurdles, he still has Olympic sprinter speed. Gault is the only one who should beat him as he is a member of the 4x100m World Champion team
they should get back to doing this, and the millionare athletes can give the proceeds to their favorite charity. Russell Wilson running the 100 against Pat Mahomes and Kalil mack.
thought nehemiah would put in better performance he is incredible hurdler but not a good football player atleast at the pro ranks wille gault won that figures
Venom101002 yup sure do and these green fans say its bullshit when you tell them, and Walker beat green TWICE, in the semis and finals walker ran 9.3 green 9.7
@@deeblue984TBF, all 40 yard times are unreliable inidicators of speed, especially over 100m. Walker was a truck, Greene a whippet, you'd expect Greene's 40yd times to be way faster than Walker's.
@@deeblue984 Well check this out. In 1987 Walker beat Green, Walker was 9.37 in the 100 yards. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OdVrHOYsPhc.html&ab_channel=CarlKingLewis
Damn Renaldo Nehamiah got burned that bad I thought he was the world class sprinter of that bunch. Willie Gault for the bears was known to have world class speed back when he was a Chicago Bear a 9.83 is a little to fast I would say 9.9 cuz they did not use sophisticated clocks in '86. They just really could not get the ball to him with mediocreQB's and a ground and pound system(Walter Payton).
Cosmic Moor 9.83 is fast but believable. Back those days they ran the 100 yard dash. its now meters which adds some legnth. It took years for even the best of the best sprinters to break sub 10 seconds.
9.8 is NOT an especially fast time for a 100yd dash (for an elite sprinter) and probably puts you around 10.55s for the 100m. Anybody running close to 10 seconds flat for the 100m should be able to run a 9.3 100yd dash. Usain Bolt passed the 100yd mark in around 8.85 seconds in his 100m WR and guys like Jessie Owens and Bob Hayes were running (hand timed) 9.3 & 9.1 respectively which would be 9.54 & 9.34 if converted to electronic performances.Keep in mind Owens was back in the 30's (!) and Hayes the 60's respectively and on cinder tracks with hand dug holes in the ground as starting blocks and heavy, unhelpfully flexible leather spikes.
@@malligrub i agree with everything you have said..its accurate, but do realise that the usage of dbol in the bob hayes days was well known, and that stuff will make you run 100m 0.5s faster than otherwise...yes he was a freak. best of all time, maybe but probably not..Bolt surely must be. That being said, that'd make Hayes the best of all time, until Usain arrived. Certainly no one was his equal until perhaps lewis..and then later, Mo Green. I'm still not convinced Mo was clean though..Balco and other circumstantial evidence suggests he may have gotten away with illegal assistance. (even if he did cheat, 'the clear' isnt going to give you the3 same benefits that d-bol does/did. chalk and cheese.
@@timn4481 No doubt, you're obviously a learned track man Tim ; ) I hadn't really heard about D'bol etc around Hayes but I suppose that would have been prime time to get away with-it just before sport went big time pro, roids become rampant in the 70s and 80s and nobody outside pro sports and bodybuilding new what they really were. People don't give Mo the credit he deserved for some reason. Apart from Bolt, it's hard to think of anybody else that was that dominant at the big events when fit like he was. That Edmonton world Champs performance where he limped the last 10 yards from the tape after doing his hamstring has been calculated using his usual final 10m split to a potentially 9.69/70 performance all the way back in the day. That would have been as shocking as Bolt's 9.58 performance at that time when even a 9.79 performance itself was unprecedented
REMEMBER people...these times are in YARDS! Not METERS! Willie Gault ran 9.83 BUT that would convert to a 10.7 or 10.83 if it was 100 METERS! They stopped running in YARDS years ago! 110 YARDS=100 METERS! 220 YARDS=200 METERS! Get it?
BACK IN 1976 MY SENIOR YR IN HIGH SCHOOL I RAN THE 100(YARD)DASH IN 10.2 I WOULDN'T HAVE DONE TOO BAD AGAINST THESE GUYS. NEHEMIAH COMPLAINED BUT THERE WAS NO WAY HE WAS GONNA TAKE OUT GAULT, WAY DIFFERANT CLASS OF SPEED BETWEEN HIS AND GAULTS
And yet he won overall. I think his winning Superstars made him believe he could do anything. Had he stayed with track, he likely would have won gold in 1984 and maybe even still been a major contender in 1988. Plus he would have been able to ride the wave of professionalism in the sport and had he maintained his form, he could have made a very nice living.
Is Nehemiah for real? He said he didn’t expect to do any better than first or second how can you do any better than first. He makes up this shit that he didn’t have any time working on his block start? How much time did Vince Coleman work on his block starts? Typical track guy that’s why couldn’t play football makes up an excuse for everything hamstring was probably a little sore too. Got out run by a baseball player twice and Coleman wasn’t even the fastest baseball player on his team.
Gault ran fast enough to win easily. Ran a 10.1 in the 100meter and owns the WR in the 100 and 200 for 40-44, 45-49, 50-54. He would have smoked dorsett.
