After a dismal 1986 season, the Mobil Holden Dealer Team celebrated a double victory on the streets of Wellington, New Zealand, surviving an action packed weekend with many damaged cars. Third were O’Brien and McIntyre with BMW’s 635.
Held on January 25, 1987.

Amazing how competitive the XJS were in '87 with very little development since '84-85.

The Jaguars; somehow had Cosworth high lift valves which helped engine reliability and good for an extra 40 to 50 hp. That’s why the Bathurst organisers in 1986 did not want the Jaguars to compete again .

This is 1986 - IN 1987 where 1st Sierra / BMW / Sierra / Nissan / Holden, sad Wellington did not remove the bumps as that killed a few and some refused to race there so i guess thats was the downfall for Wellington race

Mike Raymond along with Neil Crompton was actually working for New Zealand TV on this race as well as Channel 7 hence Channel 7 using the New Zealand commentary the NZ commentator with Mike Raymond was Tony Palmer who was also commentating on Rugby League for TVNZ at the time
@Super100MPH

Yep is was a shared telecast, produced by the NZ crew who did a brilliant job, we must remember how much harder it was back in those days with things like cables etc etc... not like today's portable wireless world. Thanks for the comment Darren

@@Super100MPH This is my favourite race of all time. I know the commentary backwards. On the VHS tape I have where I taped it off the TV when the race was live., it was Mike, Compton and Garry Wilkinson doing the commentary. Totally confused never seen this version of the commentary before. See here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iiT9JMEluqg.html Best I could find, Well, the only I could find and my tape is the same commentary.

@@janreznak881 So for 1985-88 TVNZ broadcast the race live on TV ONE in New Zealand, while Channel 7 had highlights with commentary redubbed by Mike and Neil.

Sensational. All these faces are frozen in time for me, Crosby walkinshaw grice Moffat fury and all the rest, and that includes the pit crews who were personalities as well. Skippy parsons looked like he'd seen a ghost after bending Larry's car Harvey and his porno sunglasses grice Clean shaven for surely the only time ever and how's the presentation at race end, that blonde looked like fair game for every driver on the podium except Moffat who turned his cheek when confronted with a kiss while brock looked like a kid in a candy shop and she looked at him like I'm yours. Just gold. And as the European assault fell to bits the mighty Vk 308 wiped the floor. So to you I extend my deepest gratitude for once again showing us what real racing used to look like.

The Europeans fell to bits in this race for sure and the VK showed it's excellence but it's Interesting to see Steve Soper in an early model Sierra running pretty strongly for a while. An ominous sign of what was to come. The Sierra was largely disregarded at this point in time but as we now know these cars were to become all conquering in touring cars the world over, a reign which was only ended by the mighty Godzilla GTRs. Great to see the variety in the cars and teams during this era too, whilst the V8 Supercar racing today is exciting in a different way it lacks the variety of the older formats. Closest thing today is probably the GT3 racing, lots of different makes all with different strengths and weaknesses, it's pretty good racing, especially in the endurance events.
@captainkaos1770
@captainkaos1770 7 лет назад
yes fair call andy but the sierras needed loads of money time and effort to get them to be reliable, blowing turbos in a regular basis and were a hand grenade ready to explode if not treated with respect. That said you rite in regards to the field of cars, just Excellent. v8 super cars lost me years back. Gone are the days when I'd get up at 6 after being out all nite misbehaving and sink my teeth into a whole day of Bathurst with Mike Raymond Gary wilkinson and Evan green. Last weekend I went to sandown historics in Victoria and enjoyed the smells and sounds we all love, it was great stuff. All the best to you
