1987 VS 2024 All Star Games: AOH Breaks Down

Imagine taking charges in an All Star Game. Imagine multiple people fouling out due to their defensive effort in an All Star Game.
That not only sounds strange, it sounds like an alternate universe compared to today.
This is a long one, but I am leaving town so this is the last one for a while, I hope you can make it through the whole thing.
00:00 Some old clips to set the tone.
03:40 Begin showing 2024 All Star clips
04:15. If you are smiling and hugging every time you miss, do you care about winning the game? If you don't care about winning the game, is the game important? Sure, it's OK to smile and have fun, but the real question is whether there is any competitive edge or caring about who comes out on top. If the game doesn't matter, what do we care who is on the court? If the guys on court aren't trying, what does it matter if they are the best? You aren't watching the best show what they are capable of, you're watching what the best not giving a shit looks like.
6:00 Stop pretending this is limited to the All Star Game. The All Star game is just a more extreme version of what we are now also seeing in the regular season.
7:09 You can't talk about All Star appearances nor All Star MVPs when comparing the resumes of past and present players. It doesn't mean the same thing. It's not the same game. I mean it is truly a different game now.
07:40 Put the G League in. Or a high school team. Anyone willing to compete. Because if these guys aren't trying hard against each other it might as well be anyone else. It is not a big deal to make a no look pass or dunk the ball even for many junior high kids. What makes it a big deal is if you do it against the best who are trying to stop you.
09:00 This was the three point contest part 2, except at a much slower pace.
10:32 The fans treat them like Gods, then they pull this lazy shit. Enough with the false God worship.
11:29 The dunk contest featured dunks that tried, and failed, to be as good as the plumbers of old.
13:15 Revisiting LeBron's excuse for not entering the dunk contest.
14:20 LeBron missed every shot he took except his dunks/layups.
14:36 The best in the game are afraid of competition?
16:22 Haliburton wanted MVP? MVP of what? A game that's a joke? The MVP just indicates who the most selfish player is since there is no defense and the guys who chuck up shots win. LeBron made his bid, but blew his own chances.
18:26 MSP - Further proving my point about the Most Selfish Player award, Damian Lillard won. He took the most shots on his team, but had a significantly lower shooting percentage than several other players. Didn't matter. He won. Again, considering there was no defense this award simply shows who felt the most full of themselves that day.
19:20 Lillard winning MVP is a reflection of how the NBA has treated LeBron. Reward centered game play. Forgiving / ignoring that he doesn't play defense tells the people at home that defense is not important.
21:00 Adam Silver DOES NOT GET IT. He keeps rewarding bad behavior...giving incentives to spoiled brats hoping that more toys will get them to stop being brats.

@@elockett4367You are absolutely right amico mio. I believe it was about 1999 that NBA ratings weren't great and so the league decided to create rules to favor the offense(no bodying up or hand checking or physical play...among other rule changes). These were supposed to make the game more entertaining. They obviously play to the young fans who like watching 3s launched from the locker room, dunks, lobs and free throws. Isaiah Thomas said it best about 10 years ago. He said 'today's game mirrors video games and they play checkers instead of chess'. It's a form of entertainment instead of traditional basketball play. Yes, today's players are more athletic than they were in the 60s through the 90s. But, as in most professional sports.....it's the mental game and the competitive spirits that are missing. Most players are prima donnas who are more worried about their brands than they are about.......winning. Wilt and Bill Russell are probably spinning in their graves at this point. It's a shame really. E solo la mia opinione. Grazie.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm a decade younger, but that common timeline lines up with my experience too. Weekend games were epic must-see-TV. I wore Magic Cons in 1985. In 1987 I drew a picture of Jordan and mailed it to the Chicago Stadium. Nine months later I got a signed picture and personalized letter thanking me. Even if that came from his "people" and he never saw it, it still made me a fan for his career. From time to time I watch highlights and parts of games just to keep up because I love the game in its purest form, but if the NBA went away tomorrow I wouldn't bat an eye.

Grew up watching the NBA in the 90s and early 00's. Saw the '04 Pistons win it all by playing tough defense and a team game. Life takes me away from the sport for a decade and I cannot get back into it these days. Whats worse, is when supposed NBA fans claim that the game today is better than the game from those eras. What? ...WHAT!? This gaslighting needs to be called out more. Great video.

Rugby League in Australia has an annual three game series called State of Origin, where each team picks their best team from across the league. They play harder than any club game during the year. It's possibly the pinnacle of the season, above the finals. They play for the glory. The NBA could learn something from State of Origin.

It's because players mentality nowadays is money first, load management second and then titles. So they get big fat checks, try to rest as much as possible (not to win titles but to preserve their careers, to get more money) then fingers crossed with good GM's they can pool the most superstars in their team and win it. This is Lebron's legacy!
@Nihilus_Outis

The argument/excuse of, “Well, what matters is the players are having fun” is bullshit. Unless you are member of the Harlem Globe Trotters, you are not having fun by half-ass clowning and making baskets like a pre-game warm up. They’re not having fun because they feel obligated to be there. I’m sure they rather be partying or resting during that weekend than performing with the minimum level of effort. My impression of today’s players is that they think what matter is them and not the game. They believe people should feel grateful because they are there. Their mere presence should be enough for the fans. Obviously that’s bullshit. In the age of social media, personal brands, and influencers, the appearance of something gets more value than its substance. Today’s NBA is superficial and hollow. It’s sports entertainment like WWE and not competitive sport.

As lifelong NBA fan since the 80’s, your videos sum up the modern game: Very little movement when teams are on offense. I’m currently watching the Sixers vs Cavs on ESPN and stagnation is as clear as you stated. When teams go to a half court offense, pretty much the 4 guys without the ball find an area (usually around the 3 point line) and don’t move while the player with the ball is the only one moving. It’s scary I didn’t pick this up as I remember guys like Reggie Miller constantly in motion because defense was much tighter. Kudos to your assessment of the modern NBA. The fact that I got it from a RU-vidr and not one NBA analyst really says something

The fact that I get angrier missing a shot in NBA 2K than these "professionals" got missing shots on national television in what was supposed to be the best against the best disgusts me.
