1988 World Series, Game 1: A's @ Dodgers

Oakland Athletics 4 at Los Angeles Dodgers 5, F -- The Dodgers, already serious underdogs against the A's and Bash Brothers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, are given even less of a chance with injured star Kirk Gibson on the shelf. Canseco's second-inning grand slam gives Oakland a 4-3 lead until the bottom of the ninth, when dominating closer Dennis Eckersley comes on to finish it up. But with the tying run on first, Gibson limps up to pinch hit and makes World Series history with a spine-tingling, game-winning two-run homer in his only at-bat of the Series.

The other thing that is SO poetic about this game is another unsung hero. Gibson’s replacement in the Dodgers lineup was Mickey Hatcher, who had hit ONE home run all year, and he hit a two run bomb in the first inning. Without his replacement picking him up and coming through like that, Gibson would never even have gotten this chance for this legendary moment-score would have been 4-1 A’s instead of 4-3 and there wouldn’t have even been any point in bringing Gibby to the plate here. That’s teamwork if I’ve ever seen it!

Scully is the best. Where most any other announcer (Joe Buck) would babble on about the historic home run, the A's heartbreaks, etc., Scully shuts up for a full minute and lets the crowd and picture tell the story. What a joy to be able to listen to him, for the 50 years I have been a baseball fan.

I think, the best part that makes him a good announcer is when it's the big moment, and that's when he lets the moment speak for itself. I mean seriously I bet he didn't want to wait a minute fourteen seconds to say something after that home run but that's what makes him great. Also happy he's by himself now

But he let me bring in a radio, so I listened to it... at the end, after the HR, the crowd was so loud that the radio announcer, Don Drysdale, couldn't be heard, so I didn't know what exactly had happened for several minutes. I knew it was something good, but I thought Gibson had singled to tie the game...

The most exciting and dramatic moment I have ever seen in baseball and I've been a part of the game in some capacity since 1965. Above and beyond the home run, this was the greatest at bat I have ever seen! Gibson not only was hurt, but he was down 0-2 to the best reliever in baseball, battled back to 3-2 and then hit it out to win the game! Incredible.

I can't think of any other heroic baseball moment that tops Kirk Gibson's home run. There have been plenty of amazing performances, but Gibson hitting a pinch-hit game-winning home run in the bottom of the 9th with 2 out, on two busted legs, is the stuff of legend and will never be forgotten.

Just went back to how it was before 1977. Only then did the networks hire ostensibly impartial national broadcasters for the World Series. Until then, they would contract with the announcers of the participating teams. So Scully had broadcast the ‘63, ‘65, ‘66, and ‘74 series nationally under those earlier rules.

Thank you for posting. I’ve watched this game and this Series every autumn since 1988, either on my original Beta tape recording, my DVD purchased since, or on RU-vid. Joe garagiola and Vin made such a great team, their baseball acumen was superb; this was the last Series directed by the great Harry Coyle of NBC, and it was greatly directed. There’s such a smooth flow to every game, there’s something to see or hear even in the non-scoring innings. NBC’s theme music was great, too. And to think we used to get such great televised baseball as this without a subscription, free of pitching changes and stolen bases “sponsored by”, and without overlaid graphics throughout the game.

Couple of interesting historical moments during this game: 1) Vin Scully predicts Kirk Gibson will not play tonight "for sure." 2:12:04 According to Gibson, back in the trainer's room watching the TV, this comment by Scully spurred his decision to make himself available to pinch hit. 2) The beginning of the steroid era, Canseco denies using. 2:17:39

Gibson's HR is the single biggest momentum swing of an at-bat in the history of the MLB postseason! What separates it from the rest is not only the level of competition the Dodgers were facing, but the fact that they won leading to their "down the season stretch" unhittable ace pitching Game 2! Those A's were ridiculously good and their seemingly invincible aura was challenged during that game and then sapped by Gibson's swing of the bat! It was the entire series in my opinion! I was in my junior year of HS and vividly remember the exact spot where I was sitting watching it to this day

My only question is whether there is any way that you could post the other games in this series? I was watching this game in '88. Thank you, It re-kindled my love for baseball after it was broken by Dave Henderson in '86 against the Angela. I love Hatcher's Fire, Sax's fire, Gibson's fire. I wish my current home team, Seattle Mariners, would watch stuff like this... they need it.

True story about that grand slam: The next day, before game 2, the NBC cameraman whose camera was dented by that grand slam, Jimmy Mott, asked Jose Canseco to autograph the camera. Canseco obliged. :D

Just realized that not only was it his only at bat for the series but also his last at bat in a world series for his career. The dude is such a stud. In the post interview he praises and thanks his teammates for giving him the moment instead of letting his head swell and taking all the credit. thinking back on this when we was watching it live on TV.....we were jumping up and down and i actually hugged my mother in law at the time...Thanks Gibson! lol

On top of being the best baseball announcer ever, Vin Scully is also just a very nice man. One year, my dad got box seats for a Reds-Dodgers series from the company in Cincinnati that he was doing business with. He flew my mom and I out for the weekend to enjoy the games. Saturday afternoon, after LA had thrashed the Reds the night before, I decided to walk to Riverfront from our hotel. On the way, I came up behind this shorter, older man who was wearing a suit. As I came up beside him, I saw it was Mr. Scully. I asked him if he'd mind if I walked with him and he said, "Not at all!" And we just talked baseball all the way to the park. He said he was on the verge of cutting back to calling home games only soon, among other things. He had a great sense of humor and was as down to earth as a guy could be. I didn't ask for an autograph because I didn't want one. Just the chance to talk baseball with him was awesome enough. I shook his hand as we parted when we got to the stadium and thanked him. And he thanked me for walking with him.

While Eckersley came out on the short end of this epic moment in MLB history, he was still one of the best ever. (which contributed to what made this so phenomenal) In MLB history, here's a list of all players who have won a Cy Young award, won a World Series, been named league MVP, won 20 games in a season, recorded 50+ saves in a season, thrown a no-hitter and was inducted into the Hall of Fame: 1. Dennis Eckersley That's an elite club.

Interesting listening to the talk of a 'steroid controversy' during the broadcast. If they only had known

I was just thinking the same thing. Scully and Garagiola both talk about the physical bigness of the As as if it were a mere freak of nature.

This is actually the SECOND iconic homer Gibson hit in a World Series. The first was in Game 5 in 1984 for Detroit. Both times he humbled a cocky superstar closer who went against the manager's orders and pitched to him. (Goose in '84, and Eckersley in '88.)
