Arthur Cox took over at the lowest point in the club's history for many years ..in Div 3 & with about 10 players on the books .. he set about building some fabulous, balanced & committed teams that won back to back promotions & climbed to 5th in the top flight .... some financial backing at that stage & they might have pushed on further ... great memories of players & a Manager who earned respect ...
Derby started this year in D3 (I still call it that), with just 5 senior players under contract after the bankruptcy and it feels very, very serious this year. Hoping we can do this all over again. Although when Cox got us out of D3, I was sitting on the fence on the Popside to celebrate and now 60yo living in the US, I will celebrate promotion in less energetic style.
I was there when Saunders made his debut against Wimbledon and couldn't believe how good he was, also played cricket against him and he was good at that as well
Ohh Mark Wright, ohh Mark Wright ... this was the dying throes of a fine team that Arthur Cox had built at Derby over 6 years. The spine of Shilton, Wright, Williams, Goddard & Saunders was excellent with Micklewhite & McMinn being fine wingers. Lack of investment from the top led to relegation within a few years. Cox remains (behind the legendary BC) as one of Derby's greatest post war managers.
I think he has to fall just behind Jim Smith, but very close between the two. Maybe Arthur Cox's consecutive promotions shades it for some people, but I enjoyed watching Jim's sides more. Stimac vs Wright, Shilton vs Poom. Saunders vs Wanchope. Baiano and Eranio and Kinkladze vs Sturridge and Micklewhite and Gee. Brian Clough was right (when wasn't he?) when he said a good side is built from the back, and from the centre. The spine you spoke of was repeated under Smith, with Poom, Stimac, Eranio and Baiano/Wanchope. Let's see if Gary Rowett can figure it out. As Brian Clough said, It's only complicated if you choose to make it complicated.
Should have finished second in 88/89 Mark Wright deano tin man Trevor gazza mickle white blades.chicken George,Mel, Goddard ,gee , Forsyth ,shilton, what a team forgot Robbie hindmarch rip what a team I'll always sing oh mark Wright the greatest defender of my life I miss the baseball ground I was14 at this match Give it all to go back to this team come on You rams
I was 13 and we got there late and already 2-0 down, went on to lose 6-0. It was a horrible away day but we stopped off for fish and chips on the way back home. That’s football.
I was there that day.... Had leave at 5 nil to run catch train back to Burton as I was jogging away from the ground up Catherine Street.... Just heard a mighty roar...... You rams
A player Clough shouldn't have bought as he wrecked his career. He was a promising young prospect that scored a great goal & he stupidly paid a million & Justin couldn't handle that & flopped, he went to Notts County for about 300,000 but he struggled everywhere labeled a failure. Clough should have apologised.
What's wrong with the commentary? Described the game not like these days telling you how they should be playing. Might as well switch sound off and make up our own minds.
What is that green stuff they're playing on at the Baseball Ground? (A tight ground that produced wonderful exciting games especially when the brown stuff arrived!)
He's a City fan. Good commentator but I think you're right it was dubbed after. A Central TV or Midlands commentator would have taken this game. Sinstadt was with Granada.
My first Away game 🤦🏻♂️me and our kid got crushed and police got us out and we sat next to a ball boy 2nd half not the best of Days still follow the Blues though to this day😁👍
I dont remember seeing highlights this long before. Where did you get them? Im sure on the season review oif this game it just shows the goals. I was at this game. I remember my friend who i played football with at school lived next door to gary Micklewhite, but as he, and his father were city fans, they turned down the offers of free tickets. He told me he went to this game though, stood in the derby end, and wished he had not bothered. haha. This is the city we all knew and loved. bang average, before the oil state took them over and bankrolled them to FC Barcelonas level
hahahaha on the radio ....you had to make the match in ya head with fuck all info!!!!!!!!!! i scrolled down for 2 mins without match on just com. lost in two mins. haha
