We're back at the classic cars here on TestDrive with our first for 2020. We're looking at this well maintained and OEM+ upgraded 1989 Cadillac Sedan de Ville, with some of the Cadillac Fleetwood upgrades like the rear wheel covers, Continental tire, landau roof, and luggage rack. This '89 DeVille also has the Gold Emblem & Gold Key package, Twilight Sentinel, electrochromic rearview mirror, power seats, power windows, power locks, Delco-Bose Gold Series audio, and blue cloth interior.
Our full tour and review of this 1989 Cadillac Sedan DeVille goes over all the exterior and interior features on this specific vehicle, as well as the differences between the regular DeVille, the Fleetwood, and the Sixty Special. We discuss some of the optional extras GM produced for this vehicle, and how this Cadillac was used as a testbed for new technologies. After our thorough interior and exterior walkaround we take this 4.5L HT-4500 V8 engine on the road to see how this Cadillac performs 31 years later.
Our daily-driving road test talks about what you might expect from the ride, drive, and experience of this 1989 Cadillac DeVille, including the way the steering performs, engine responsiveness, suspension travel, and even the sound and road noise. We go around town to see how this 31 year old Cadillac holds up and discuss what we feel about it when compared with some of the other classic cars we've driven and even some modern ones.
We include several point-of-view or POV shots of driving this 1989 Cadillac Sedan Deville along with our in-car commentary as we drive along. Can you give more detail on how this car compares to the Mercedes S-class vehicles of the same era that you've tested? You alluded to it in the video, but didn't say much.

You're absolutely right, I only mentioned it in passing since I know how upset some people get when I compare an American luxury vehicle to something from the Germans, like I did with the Cadillac CT6 versus BMW 7 Series. The 1988 M-B 560 SEL we featured drove like an absolute dream, the ride was softer on it than this Cadillac, but recovered quicker to give you a less boat-like experience. The steering was more precise on the Mercedes, however I'd say the engine response was better on this Cadillac, probably because of the weight difference between the S-Class and this, despite having almost half the horsepower. The Mercedes felt older on the inside, and ultimately had a more conservative set of features.

You mentioned that this Cadillac had alot of new technology being tried out for 1989. Twilight Sentinel was first introduced to Cadillac's full line in 1955.

Maybe not new for Cadillac, but new for the industry. Auto headlamps still weren't a thing on other vehicles until the start of the 2000s, and finally we can say all cars have them more or less by 2020.

@@PRNTestDrive Not true at all. Buick and Oldsmobile offered auto headlamps beginning in the 1960's. Chrysler offered it on the Imperial in the 1960's through the mid 1970's and expanded it to their larger luxury sedans in the 1970's. Ford offered it on the Thunderbird starting in 1964. Lincoln Continental had the auto head lamps at least as far back as in the 1970's as an option as well.

Glad you liked it! There aren't many videos on this era of GM vehicles, you've got shows like MotorWeek who reviewed them new, but the only stuff I found online were dealers with listing videos. Hope the one you're going to look at is worth buying!

Snagged it for $1600 - definitely not as nice as the one you reviewed, but aside from some hail damage, it's in fantastic shape. I'll have to post a video soon. Cheers

Awesome video, Nile. This really brings me back to my youth when my parents rented a Sedan deVille for a week. I don’t remember the circumstances, but I definitely remember being impressed by all the luxury and technology and, if I recall, there was a tape provided by Cadillac that you could pop in the cassette deck to familiarize yourself with the features of the car. One of my really good friends who just had retired laid down a ton of money for a new Deville in a nice deep gold color and brown vinyl roof with the 4.9 200hp FWD. had the Skirts and leather. Was he proud to drive up to my diner and couldn’t wait to take me for a ride. I was 27 years old and never rode in such a smooth car. Only a few months later and his Brand New Caddy started to fall apart on him. It started going back to the dealer for service often and the Biggest issue was the Transmission failed him in 4 months and he was without the car more than the days he had the car. He decided to dump it and I was Shocked when he came back with to the diner with the all NEW Prius. I mean totally different. To this day he’s never changed brands nor has he changed models. He has had 3 Prius and not once has he had to go to the dealer for unwanted service. He took me for a ride in the Prius and I was amazed at hjow much room was inside. He LOVES them. He’s now 92 years of age.

That sounds like the exact same experience my Uncle Jack told me about, his colleagues had no end to their problems with the Cadillacs, but he never suffered with his Olds. It's incredible how much innovation went into these cars, but that innovation ultimately leaves the buyer on the side of the road, as the tech is unproven and un-tested. Number one complaint I read about for this generation is complete engine failure, none of them were event close to reliable.

Interesting story , considering that cadillac stopped making the 4.9 engine in 94 or 95 ??? Even more Interesting is that prius did not hit the American market until the year 2000 !!! The 4.9 was one of cadillac better engines , 250k - 300k ml is quite possible as well as the transmission!!! The transmission was lazy compared to modern cars , but the car was built for comfort and its soft absorbent ride , it was not built to set speed records !!! But the transmission also was reliable, I got over 200k out of mine , not to mention that I had given the car to my teenage son , whom dog the s@#t out of that car !!! If that car was in my possession and not handed over to my son !!! I could have gotten 300k out of the engine and transmission. . . And as far as your friend getting rid of his caddy for a prius! A Prius!!!!!!!??‽ a Lincoln, Chrysler 300 or Lexus !!!! Sounds far more appropriate!!! No one whom drives a luxury car down grades to a Prius 😅😂🤣😂

I absolutely loved the floating feeling when riding in my grandfather’s Caddy, sad that American large luxury sedans, heck all sedans as a whole are essentially extinct and everything is now just another cookie cutter lifeless crossover. BTW I love that this channel does these kinds of reviews that are in depth, informative and high quality.

I'm glad to hear that! I always worry these videos end up running too long and interest dies out after a few minutes. I agree that it's sad that sedans are dying here, especially something like this. I would much prefer to drive a car with a super soft suspension like this.

The Cadillac Sedan DeVille Sixty Edition, DeVille, Fleetwood, and Brougham D'Elegance were my favorite and I was old enough to have seen these cars new at a Cadillac dealership in Monterey California. My uncle had a 1991 new Deville good comfortable cars. Thank you for the video.

That's definitely the question. If it's a simple part failure like the compressor then it might not be too costly, but if there's a leak somewhere in the system mixed with failed components then it might end up being more than it's worth.

I didn't see the Serv Air Cond light on. Usually that comes on if it is low in refrigerant. Hard to say what could be the issue on this car.

The two big differences in the Fleetwood are: 1) the Fleetwood has button and tufted interior with open grain walnut trim. 2). The Wheelbase on the Fleetwood was 3 inches longer then the Deville, although the overall length of the car was the same. The additional wheelbase was added to the rear floor for more passenger comfort..The Fleetwood had 2 lighted vanity mirrors in the roof for the rear seat passengers to do make up touch ups! lol

This adds to the confirmation the one I am working on getting is a original Fleetwood with the extra space on the floor and vanity mirrors. Just got the vin number from my friend and it's confirmed. I have not been able to find out what the value is for these though. Hagerty shows only for the 90 coupe.

The Fleetwood model shown did not have a wheelbase 3 inches longer than the Sedan Deville; the wheelbases were identical. The 3-inch stretch on the Fleetwood’s wheelbase over the Sedan Deville ended in 1976 (properly the model was the Fleetwood Sixty Special Brougham), and even then the whole car was 3-inches longer along with the wheelbase. It is true, however, that the Sedan Deville and Fleetwood sedan of these years were 3 inches longer, both in wheelbase and overall length, than their Coupe Deville and Fleetwood coupe counterparts. The difference in the Fleetwoods for these years are the interior as mentioned in the original post, the addition of fender skirts to give it a more traditional and upscale look, and I believe a vinyl top was standard. The fender skirts on the car shown were somehow cut and rigged to fit. Look at a picture of an actual Fleetwood of this era to see how they should look.

Yep put me down with people that never warmed up to these front wheel drive Caddy’s and still can’t. Proportions just don’t look right. If memory serves this is around the time badge engineering was really a thing for GM. Can we get a town car review of early and late 80s? 😋

I think that number could get down too, considering it sat for a bit while running before I started that driving segment, and most of the driving was in-town. On the highway it might be closer to 11L.

The Fleetwood had vanity mirrors with lights for the back two seats mounted on the headliner. Fleetwood had cloth covered pillars between the two doors from the floor up. I can't tell on this car but a Fleetwood also had cloth covered pillars along side the front windshield. The seats in this car are definitely DeVille seats. Fleetwood would have been button tufted cloth. Fleetwood had pockets behind the front seats for storage for like maps, Penthouse, okay National Geographic for the kids,etc.

Button tufted seats were on the d'Elegance option which you could get on the Fleetwood or Deville, also you could order either Fleetwood or Deville with cloth or leather.

I was just looking into one white with red leather interior with no upgrade like the padded roof (I wish it had) and no sun roof :( It does not have the gold emblems either. It's a 2 owner Best of all it's from a collection of cars from a old farmer with 31,268 original miles and it shows. I also bought two other cars from the same owner, a 78 Eldorado Biarritz and a 94 Blue Deville. I prefer the Fleetwood. It does have the mirrors in the roof for rear passengers and is all original. Now to determine the value of each after determining Fleetwood or Deville. I am pretty excited because I been talking to him about it for months. Any tips in helping me determine the fleetwood and approximate value? Thanks.

I remember how this Cadillac looked hopelessly outdated against the competition from Germany and Japan at the time, but I did like the way it looked (at least the exterior; the interior is another story). Of that era, my favorite Cadillac was the Eldorado Coupe, which I still think is one of the best looking cars GM has ever made!

Something like the original Lexus LS 400 really puts this to shame in terms of the design, however it seemed to work for Cadillac buyers at the time. I suppose GM wasn't as interested in attracting new customers as it was to keep existing ones on board. The Eldorado had a long run of excellent vehicles, I'd love to feature some of them.

I love these era Cadillac's! I have had many..I had a 1984 Sedan De'Ville in 1991 which took me and my dear mother all the way to Erie Pa from Tampa FL in 1991..Flawless car in triple yellow..4.1 HT4100 V-8 with NO problems at all..LOVED this car!! In 1992 traded in for a 1989 Brougham dark ble with dark blue leather interior..Beauty for sure but talk about an UNRELIABLE car!! Had the Olds 307 V-8 if memory serves me right..I liked the 4.1 HT4100 better but I know that was a hated engine..First from Scarrit in St Pete, FL and the 89 Brougham from Ed Morse Cadillac in Tampa..Later in life I was able to buy an elderly lady's 1993 Sedan De'Ville for only $400 after I found her a 2003 Grand Marquis with only 35K miles to replace the oil leaking Caddy..The Blue Sedan De'Vile is on a video on my channel

I'm really glad I had the chance to drive this one, it was a personal milestone for me. Before starting filming new cars 3 years ago I swore I'd never waste my time with a Cadillac, new or old. Mostly because the first car I looked at buying when I was young was a GM and it was a wreck. Now I've had the chance to drive one of these classics and really was able to appreciate how much went into these cars.

Interesting, I have never seen a regular Deville with fender skirts. I was just looking into one white with red leather interior with no upgrade like the padded roof (I wish it had) and no sun roof :( It does not have the gold emblems either. It's a 2 owner car with the 2nd owner since the late 90's. Best of all it's from a collection of cars from a old farmer with 31,268 original miles and it shows. Deville or Fleetwood I will take it, I prefer the Fleetwood. It does have the mirrors in the roof for rear passengers and is all original. Now to determine the value of each.

The fender skirts were also an add-on that the owner of this particular car did. Sounds like the one you've found is a real keeper with that mileage!

@@PRNTestDrive Yes, I got the VIN from the owner and it says Fleetwood. I only wish it had the half roof like the one you tested instead of full vinyl roof. No complaints though. I gave my son a red with white leather 90 Deville with the E&G Classics grill and tire kit on the back and now I have the fever again. Funny how things turned out, I went to buy a 72 Impalla 4 door but it had too much rust and took home a beautiful Montana blue 94 Deville. He was so kind and showed me what else he had in another building, a 93 White Deville and the 89 Fleetwood. I kindly bugged the H... out of him and we decided on a price.

fleetwoods had nice seaters, real wood, and some other upgrades, which differentiated the deville series from the Fleetwood..the gold trim is a seperate upgrade

That was one disappointment I had with this car, had I known originally it was as modified as it was I might not have done the video, we try to find cars that are as original to factory spec as possible and this one really isn't. OEM+ is ok in some cases, but it would have been nice to drive a real Fleetwood.

You'll definitely want to do a full tune up, flush the gas to make sure it's all fresh, check for any rust or mold too.

Good question! I believe this was some sort of aftermarket addon, not an original GM part. There may be companies out there that still make a kit for these, but it might be hard to find.

The grill, grill header, landau roof, trunk rack and continental kit are all aftermarket add-ons. If this is a deVille then the fender skirts are from a Fleetwood. The interior does appear to be a deVille interior.

Despite being presented here as a “boat”, which it is by today’s standards, this car was actually a major downsize from more traditional rear-drive Cadillacs of yore and was part of an attempt to make the brand more European-like in size, ride, and handling. The car shown is more than 28 inches shorter, 7 inches narrower, and 1500 pounds lighter than a mid-70s Fleetwood Brougham. This car wasn’t so much intended to be a boat, but rather was a reaction to the company’s previous boats. The intention of the new C-platform was to be far smaller and more agile and nimble in its handling and steering than its predecessors, which it certainly was.

I'd honestly check out local junk yards, you might be able to find one! My first car was a 1983 Ford LTD Crown Victoria and I was shocked when I found a local yard had a few of them, managed to score a few needed parts off them. These might be harder to track down but depending on where you are you might get lucky.

It's possible your cruise control module has failed, if it's not working. You need to flip on the cruise switch to engage it, but it seems if it doesn't work it could also be a vacuum issue with the cruise control system.

MY 63 SIXTY SPECIAL FLEETWOOD HAD THAT AND AUTRONIC EYE WHICH DIMMED AND BRIGHTED THE HEAD LAMPS AUTOMATICALLY.

The Brougham would be a beast compared to this! I think the 74-76 Cadillac Sixty Special is the longest non-limo they ever produced, at 133" WB and 233.7" overall length, that's a car I'd love to feature just to see how huge it is.

@@dennispeaks I use this website to search. autotempest.com Rarely do I see the FWD drives listed. What I do see are mostly DeVille's. GM must not have sold very many FWD Fleetwood's. Actually they have one of the better Cadillac engines, 4.5L

If you want performance then buy a Bentley. Cadilac was an avenue cruiser with all that classic comfort that only a big caddy can offer. This particular years had those lovely skirts which are a classy luxurious option that you just can't pass on. This is what you expect in styling as well with a large bodied caddy. Classic lines and that 70's-90's vinyl tops.....just gotta have it.

The FWD-era for American luxury cars was definitely a low point, especially for a car like the Lincoln Continental. Thankfully Cadillac has shifted back to RWD-based sedans.

Yes and no, the answer is a lot more complicated, since Cadillac sold a vehicle known as the Fleetwood in the 70s, but then started using it really as the top-end trim for this car as a different 'model' to try and get older customers to upgrade to these downsized vehicles. This specific VIN is an example of how confusing this ultimately is, as the car was sold as a regular Sedan De Ville, but the owner wanted to make it fancier, and added a bunch of Fleetwood parts to make it look like a Fleetwood.

That's certainly true, and that's one of the things that would have been on a proper 'Fleetwood' sedan over this de Ville. I'm torn on which I'd prefer though, I do like the comfort and softness of cloth seats like this, but the leather adds to the overall experience.
