• A Fancy Dead Blow Hamm... -~-
A long overdue upgrade to the Wood Whisperer shop is a quality first aid kit. A typical first aid kit comes with a bunch of stuff we don't really need in the wood shop, so I set out to create a first aid kit specifically for woodworkers. While there are certainly other injuries we might experience, the most common will be cuts, splinters, amputation, and debris in the eye. So the primary components of the Woodworker's First Aid Kit will address those injuries.
In the video, you'll see I use a nifty Wall-Mounted First Aid Box that is durable and compact. Perfect for hanging on the shop wall!
Cuts & Lacerations
Various Band-Aids -- I like strong heavy duty bandages in a variety of sizes and shapes. Knuckle and finger-tip bandages are a favorite in the shop.
Butterfly Strips and Steri-Strips -- Great for holding wounds closed.
Gauze Pads -- For larger wounds where a bandaid just won't do.
Gauze Roll
Tape -- Holds gauze pads in place.
CA Glue -- Can be used to "stitch" a wound closed.
Quick Clot -- Stops bleeding fast!
Antibiotic Ointment -- Applied to wounds when they can't be cleaned thoroughly.
Splinters
Tweezerman Tweezers -- Heavy-duty and very sharp tweezers for digging out nasty splinters.
Magnifying Headset -- Some splinters are so small that you need magnification to see the details.
Amputation
Tourniquet -- For applying pressure at amputation site.
Instant Cold Pack -- To keep the amputated part cool.
Zip-Lock Bag -- To transport the amputated part.
Eye Injuries
Eyewash Station -- A sterile saline solution to help flush debris out of the eye.

dunno if its been said already, but burn cream is a good idea. friction burn, heavy sanding or even drilling can make parts quite hot, or my personal nemesis, the soldering iron.

My dad is a retired heart surgeon and is now a hobbyist woodworker. In the corner of the shop there is a crate filled with enough suture to close a laceration from head to toe about 50 times. This crate also contains every medical supply necessary for conducting open heart surgery, with the exception of anesthesia (according to my dad). For removing splinters, I use carbide tipped forceps and surgical loupes. My first aid crate is probably as overboard as you can go, but good preparation never hurts.

Wow, a first aid kit that actually has some blood management in it! Most of the first aid kit you would buy have 1 little gauze pad and 30 alcohol wipes and a few band aids. The only thing that I would add to your I.F.A.K is Johnson & Johnson Surgipads, for those deep laceration and to apply to a possible amputation. Awesome video by the way. :)

So true! Most of us work alone so have a phone close by and do not try to tuff it out and drive yourself to the hospital. If you do cut a finger off you will go into shock. Some of the side effects of shock is disorientation, confusion and possible loss of conscious. Driving a car while in shock can only lead to more bad things. So, control the bleeding with direct pressure and a dressing, call 911, recover or just locate the digit and wait for help to arrive.

Marc you might consider Telfa pads as well. They're non-adherent pads that are better than gauze for some things, because they don't get down into the wound, so when you're pulling them out, they don't destroy clots and what not. For larger wounds, they do require backing with, say, a cotton bandage because they're not very absorbent, but they're superior to gauze for most applications.

Great first aid kit, I'm in to wood work and hiking ect and I invest a lot in my first aid systems, I would highly recommend an isreali dressing, you can pick them up online cheap enough and are excellent for puncture wounds, lacerations ect. I'm gonna post a video on my kit this week!

Great video Marc...especially the disclaimer at the beginning. There are some great (good?) articles on shop first-aid at Fine Woodworking's online site. Some that are free and others for the paid members only (such is life). A great one is in print issue #216 in reference to the "CA- glue-as-stitches" comment Marc made...now to check the other sites...

As a Medic and woodworker I'd say that for most minor injuries that you get that cleaning and protecting are important.BUT some cuts that are deep need proper care and you should see a doctor for treatment.I learned this the hard way and have the scar on my left hand to prove it.Sometimes people don't objectively look at the injury. TIME IS CRITICAL for best chance of healing and minimize scar tissue. Not to mention potential nerve damage. So don't wait to get proper medical treatment!

I simply do all my woodworking in the lobby of the ER. Sure, I get some funny looks and its an inconvenience dragging in all my tools, but I won't have to worry about bleeding out before I can make it to my first aid kit.
@halon73
@halon73 11 лет назад
PS - Really what you need in your medkit depends on how severe the injury you expect to treat and how close you are to a medical facility. If you are out in BFE and get your hand cut off be prepared to have all the supplies you need to stabilize and transport over great distance. If you are like me and live 10 minutes to the nearest ER then you can rely on a smaller kit. At work I generally have everything because I'm part of mountain rescue and we don't know how long until transport arrives.

Wrap chopped off fingers in gauze before putting them in the bag with the ice pack. Keeping them clean greatly increases the chance of reattachment working. If you use plain old ice, wrap them in gauze, put them in a bag, and put that bag in a bag with the ice. Rhey should be kept clean and dry

An excellent video, Marc. I bought a great pair of tweezers from Rockler a few years ago. They were very sharp (when I bought them) and they also came with a small magnifying lens, hinged on to the other end. A lot of cheap or small First Aid kits seem to come with plastic tweezers, which are usually about as effective as a pair of chopsticks!

When I was little my dad pricked the main wrist artery changing a radial arm saw blade. Blood pulsed all the way to the wall. It would not stop so they wound up placing a little tube in there at the hospital. Watch the wrist vessels.

I had heard that CA was originally invented as a surgical adhesive, but Wikipedia doesn’t confirm that. It does note that CA spray was reportedly used in the Vietnam War. Also says it has been used medically since the 1970s outside the US, but FDA approved its use as a medical adhesive only in 1998 with Dermabond. It is apparently safer and more functional than stitches for closing wounds, and results in fewer infections and less scarring.

I made the mistake of sliding my hand over a 2x4 while pulling a batch down from a box store rack. Had a "splinter" in my palm from that one.. Continued along my way and finished shopping, then went home to have the wife help pull it out (as I could not).. It was over an inch long and rammed into my palm.. She said "That's no splinter!"... So I said, "Ok, it's a sliver then".. :p

I'm not totally sure but I think you can buy liquid stitches. I have first hand experience using CA glue on all sorts of cuts and works great. However don't know of any issues with long term use and any chemicals getting absorbed in.

PSS - Last thought - Promise - Most of us are solitary spending hours (days) in our shops alone crafting amazing things from wood. That being said if something horrible happened (kickback into the femoral artery perhaps) there would be little time to call for help. So you are the best chance you have of staying above ground by taking first aid training. Don't wait until you are hurt to read the first aid book. Get American Red Cross trained today! Or get training period. It could save you!

I'm not a medic of any kind either, but you should include in your first aid kit a sharpie. If you do need to use a tourniquet, write the time/date on your arm/leg starting with a "T" incase you are found to be unconscious or in a state of hypovolemic shock. This is so medical personnel have an idea how long the Tourniquet has been in place and how long your missing limb or digits have gone without blood supply.

Perhaps some thoughs should be given to electrical safety. i have seen a lot of videos of woodworkers that involve some kind of tinkering with electrical installations. It should be stressed that you should never to things to electrical installations if you are not absolutely sure what you are doing. Especially the US style plugs with very limited insulation are dangerous. Perhaps a heart starter would be a valid addition ?

Props on the bag and cold pack. As a certified emt, I'm ashamed to say that managing the missing part has never crossed my mind. I have a heavy duty CAT tourniquet hanging up on my big RAS and table saw and one hanging right next to my fire extinguisher. A bit overkill maybe, but they were left over army gear I had when I got out, so I used them. The magnifier was a good one too! I keep a SAM splint (also free army left overs but fairly cheap and amazingly versitile for immobilizing wounds) in my kit. They will flex and mold to any form. I keep ace wrap with it. Another Idea I just had is throwing a tampon in. I used to keep them as a last resort for gun shot wounds, but I imagine if one of my two arm saws shot me and I pulled it out in an unclear "holy sh*t" moment, at least it would plug it up. I'm not familiar with that very brand of quik clot, but the stuff with oyster shell powder as the active ingredient, more often than not has to be surgically removed before the wound can even be addressed by a real doctor. One more tip in my rant is to fold your medical tape over on itself so you have a nice tab to grab in the event that you need it quickly. Overall an A+ video in my opinion!

I am a fire extinguisher technician and I think you should cover in an episode some fe basics. How to, type, size, chemical. There are many scenarios in any shop; wood, metal, basic or automotive which could require a fire extinguisher. That extinguisher in the back ground in my opinion is not suitable for a woodshop. If I knew how to give you my contact info email or phone I'd do so and would happily teach/suggest some options for you to have as well as cover in your episode.

I think you should be giving more of a warning for quik-clot than the CA glue. That stuff is nasty during cleanup of injuries and has a reputation for being something often misunderstood and misused to cause more harm than good.

The quick clot item is not necessary in my opinion. My background is working as a paramedic. The quick clot has a tendency to burn the surrounding tissue, it works by chemically cauterizing the wound. The military uses it, by they are dealing with large trauma. The best thing for stoping bleeding is a clean gauze and direct pressure at the wound site. Even the worst case scenario of some missing fingers secondary to a table saw injury direct pressure should be sufficient. I

it is a good kit, doesn't miss a thing. I guess; but a tourniquet is really a bad idea. if you leave it on for even something like 20 min. there allready be bloodcells dieing. if there is tissue thats dieing you risk losing quite a lot more than "just" a diggit. I.E every thing from the tourniquet down. so if you really insist of useing it make sure you clamp as close the wound as possible

I'm really not a safety sally type, but please never put CA or super glue in a cut. I'm a med student and I have seen this before, and I think this comes from the very similar derma-bond we use in the hospital ER. However derma-bond is sterile, CA glue is not. We have had many cases of infection, even on occasion the type of infection that requires hospitalization from people using CA glue as a wound closure.
