I have a '91 Town Car (base model) with 34k original miles. It has the optional digital cluster, moonroof, leather seats, auto dimming headlights, geometric alloy wheels and dual exhausts. Great cars.
Very nice, I had a base 92 with the same mileage. It was my favorite car I’ve had. I posted a video of it on my channel as well as a 97 I had as well if you’d like to check it out.
When I rented a 91 Town car with the new 4.6 engine I realized very quickly that this engine loved to rev and did not have any hint of hesitation as the 302 took longer to bring on the power. A memorable experience of running flat out through the gears that felt light and quick the torque was now everywhere.
@@CarswithNash My 88 Town car and 87 5.0 T Bird both have the 150 Horsepower Windsor Engine but my 2000 Granny Marquis is the real star with the PI 4.6 that will blast out of the hole so fast and leave the non H.O 5.0 cars in the Dust !
@@CarswithNash Having driven these as taxis for a Quarter century the last 5.0 in a 1991crown vic had oil pump failure and locked up after nine years as a Taxi the PI 4.6 just seems to have no issues at all and were taken off line at 500 k with no issues except worn out interiors !
@@lilibethdoherty295 Sorry my experiences differ and as far as the oil pump failure that is just bad luck, you yourself know those engines generally last forever, they are well known for that. 4.6’s can do pretty good with good maintenance, but they are a lot more complexed and fussy engine, more prone to burning oil or needing timing chain work etc. Plugs strip out easier. And in my experience they tend to drink a bit more fuel.
Between a '90 and '91, I'd rather have the '90, because within the whole Panther line, it was actually unique; it is the first 2nd-gen Town Car, meaning it was already completely updated and has air bags and other stuff, BUT it still has the original 1st-gen, raw 5.0L Windsor engine. The Crown Vic/Marquis of the same years had the old shape, but had a changed dash similar to them but no passenger air bag. This is why I consider 1989 to be the cutoff of "true" 1st-gen Panther cars. Those years were a change in evolution. I own an '89 Vic, myself.
I will delete the airbags, a 30 year old airbag is really unsafe, specially if it is an early attempt from a company like this is An old bad airbag could even kill you
I have the same white car 1990 town car base with leather interior and I love that car, not passing smog but I hoping is just the o2 sensors. GR8 video
@@cadillacpete8240 Yeah that one does nice, it’s the one I used to tow home most of my project cars, it’s got some grunt to it, but I have since sold it to one of my friends, I still see it around. I’ve actually sold both of these cars but I still have my ‘94 Town Car with 351W swap (still a project).
My dad died this year he left us his 90 Town Car with 49k miles. It’s the base model what a fantastic car it’s SO smooth and SO quiet. Amazing story Ford had just hit home run with the 86 Taurus and the 80’s Town Car was very popular. Cadillac was going front Wheel Drive ( Caddi was ugly too). Engineers convinced Ford managers that customers still wanted RWD body on frame luxury. They nailed it. They worked on the exhaust so it would have powerful but refined sound.
I have personally noticed that the color of the interior wood is darker on the red interiors. I have a 1996 with the red interior whose woodgrain is significantly darker than my other one with the two-tone beige and gray interior. Your review is otherwise flawless, so far as I can tell. Your Cartier has such a fantastic color combo!
Kirbys and Other Vacuums Too Yes I think your right on that as one other person mentioned that as well. Unfortunately when I researched some of the facts for this I ran across some false information that had said the ‘90’s had darker trim. The thing is I also have a ‘94 Town Car with the same red interior & it has the light colored wood in it so it must have been optional or something. The one thing that bothers me is I forgot the show the steering column tilt levers, the ‘90 has a fancy chrome one but ‘91 up is just a plain black one. Thanks for watching!
Matt's Garage I never noticed the black tilt lever before! Just between the two years, the 91 seems a bit "discontented" in comparison. I've always admired the '90, but I've never found an example in good enough condition to buy. They all look like your beater (if not worse sometimes)! My '96 Cartier is sufficient enough. Love that car. I honestly don't see myself parting with it. Just an absolutely fantastic machine. Again, good looking 91, brother!
Kirbys and Other Vacuums Too A lot of people prefer the ‘95-‘97 Town Car’s, I really prefer the interior on the ‘90-‘94’s but I kinda like the front end changeup on the newer ones. I having been thinking about putting the newer front on my ‘94 so I’d have the best of both worlds. Yeah most the ‘90’s seem to be base models also, I did see an ultra clean ‘90 Cartier for sale once but it was after I bought the ‘91 already. Now you’re gonna hate me but I parted with the ‘91 recently. It was a tough choice but with having 3 the same I felt it would be better for the channel to get a different car in it’s place. While my ‘90 is rusty it is mechanically strong, the interior is mint & I was enjoying it even more then the ‘91, so the ‘91 ended up being the short straw... Check out the link, you will likely be disguised by what I traded for but I have broad tastes...! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lpaFc_6S1zQ.html
Kirbys and Other Vacuums Too I own 8 cars currently, you should scroll down my videos because I have videos on them all. I have a ultra rare ‘80 Lincoln Versailles, that was another reason I parted with the ‘91 is the Versailles stole it’s winter parking spot so it was stuck out in the weather & that was hurting me. The new owner loves it & has a garage to park it in so it’s in good hands.
Lucky lol I have a 90 Cartier and it’s hard to find specs on the inside and great video now I can see the difference between years. I know from 90-93 the parts are interchangeable, I go to the junk yard pulling parts a lot . Shit it’s almost impossible it seems to find parts for these cars especially if there small parts. Bigger is diff but man oh man a lot of these parts can be expensive. Just for a so called new grille cover for the speakers on the door just for 1 them fools charged 35$ and shipping for that which doesn’t way nothing is about 10 I’m like wtf... junk yard 4 bucks I don’t like how it looks so I just reupholstery the grille .. Good video though bro good luck with the 2 cars
Thanks a lot! Yes I have better luck finding parts for old Mercedes then old Lincolns, you'd think more would cross to Crown Vics but not much actually does.
If you get the dual exhaust package with the 4.6l the low end is so much better than the old 5.0 and if you upgrade the mufflers and get high flow cats the 4.6 has so much torque through so much rpm range and it’s so smooth I think the 4.6 is the better option because its square bore and stroke makes more power with less fuel
Billy Gillespie LOL! A quick look at a dyno graph blows your theory. Also the 4.6 car shown has factory duals, that’s the 5.0 that’s single... I’ve had a few 4.6’s with performance exhaust as well. The old 5.0’s & 5.8’s were just so much better in every way then their replacements, so sad Ford replaced them.
life02ab Yes I agree, it looked better and also held up better, the plastic trim they put on the ‘91+ tends to degrade badly in the elements and is tough to source a replacement for.
@@CarswithNash I am lucky that when I had the front and rear bumper's repainted as the clear coat was going - and they are two tone blue - my guy found a very nice set of trim so it now looks new again; simply, they have to stay out of the sun so garaged and covered outside.
life02ab I actually replaced that trim on my ‘94 with some generic stuff but the width was a little off so I ended up having to shave it down and that kind of ruined it because the moisture got under the edge where I shaved it so it’s already all degraded again.
When they make the engine wider I guess it was so that people can't work on them and you take them in for service obviously if I ever by one I'll look for the 90 model with the 5.0 like you said better space easier to work on.
Bohemia Lite They may have made it wider so it would be shorter for lower hood lines on future models, the 4.6 was the first of the modular engines Ford still uses today (5.0 Coyote engine).
They didn’t make the engine wider the ohc heads are a bit taller and have more meat on the exhaust side they’re both 90 degree v 8s the deck height on the 4.6 is a little taller because it has a longer stroke but in reality if you put the 4.6 heads on the 4.0 Windsor block they would be almost the same width within about an inch
The 5.0 is nice, but the 4.6 2 valve is a GREAT engine. It's bigger obviously but it's still easy to work on and makes like 60 more HP. I would definitely choose a 4.6 over the older 5.0 which is very antiquated at this point. Can be great engines but they're a real dog in something like this.
Shockingly, you forgot the most important difference, perhaps even bigger than the engine. The new front suspension geometry. Lincoln changed the front suspension geometry (control arms, angles) for 91, while 91 Grand Marquis/Crown Vic still kept the old cushy one. The 91 Town Car has the new, "anti-dive" suspension which has a paramount effect on ride comfort. The front does not dive on braking as it used to and is not so soft and comfortable as the old Panthers.
Interesting, this is the first time I've heard this. Perhaps I didn't notice since both of my cars were high miles, so the springs are pretty worn. The other thing I forgot was the tilt release lever changed...
@@CarswithNash Yeah, for many, the first gen Town Car (80-89) were the most comfortable American sedans ever, and I can agree with that. The ride is just beautiful!
@cougar9902 That generation of Town Car benefited from having both springs and air suspension in the rear, they had airbags just to level the rear and coils for the main suspension, but I imagine the airbags helped smooth the ride as well. I was planning to get one of those era of Town Cars, but then I got this distracted by Mercedes...
harryrez I’m not sure the exact reason they eliminated the vent windows, likely cost was a factor but it could be things like wind noise and aerodynamics that also factored. ‘90 is my favourite year for sure, love all that stainless trim and I love the dash on the ‘90-‘94’s, not so much a fan of the ergonomic ones they put in the ‘95-‘97’s...
I have a 91 town car got it at 46k and it's at 58k rn it's only been a year since I got lol its so dam reliable I've only changed the EGR and battery it was sitting from 2002 to 2017 in sum guys business only paid 2k for it I gtta say I'm 1 happy owner
Olde English 800 That’s a great score with nice low miles like that. My white ‘90 also shown here has 235k miles & still is very reliable. Sadly I did part with the ‘91 recently, I had 3 of these cars so I let that one go so I could have another car in it’s place. No matter what I plan to always have a Town Car, nothing is more relaxing & comfy to drive!
Matt's Garage I love those cars especially the 90-94 ones I liked their headlights more than the newer ones and ya u can't beat the ride it's like your riding on a cloud I had to replace the air bags wit coils tho since they went out still rides like a cloud tho
Olde English 800 Yeah I’ve converted both my ‘90 & ‘94 to coils & then I had put new bags in the ‘91 just to keep it all original. I actually prefer the ride from the coils & also you never have to worry about coils suddenly dropping. Not to mention it’s cheaper then the air spring replacements by far.
Matt's Garage ya I liked the 90's trim wit the chrome bumper instead of all the plastic but Ive always liked the 4.6 motor more since I owned crownvics before n know how reliable those motors are
Brian Mensching Yes it was a option for owners to later have a passenger air bag installed at the dealer, your’s would have come new with the delete panel. That’s a rare model I believe, hang on to it.
I have a 93 Cartier and has grey leather seats instead of cloth and leather like yours and the heater control panel on mine is all pushbutton instead of sliding levers like yours and my grill is a little different in 93 but other that that it is the same car.
monarch1957 Yes they received a slight update in ‘93 that remained for ‘94 & then a major redesign for ‘95. I have a ‘94 Town Car as well but only the Executive trim on it & I’ve swapped a 351W into it. Thanks for watching!
Not a bad review, I have a 1990 TC (Base Model) But mine has the Premier Sound system, 4 wheel ABS Brake System and yea, I hate the drum brakes in the back. Mine has all leather seats front and back. I bought it used in 2009, did a particle carfax report on it. found out that I am the 3rd owner of this car. And as of right now 125,855 miles on it. I bought it when it had 76,555.
David M Sounds like a keeper for sure! I’ve actually since traded the ‘91 Cartier for another car & I use the ‘90 for my daily most the time. 235k miles on it now & still going strong. I have a project ‘94 Town Car as well that I’ve swapped a 351W into.
As much as I generally dislike the 5.0 (Very, Very slow), I have to admit that these early 4.6 motors were not all that great. Oil burning, timing chain issues, barely any plug threads, relatively crappy torque, you name it. They did get a lot better after 95, and even better yet after 2000, but I can't stand the round body-style they came out with on these Lincolns for 98, and I'm not a fan of the 95-97 interior or ride either. So 1990 it is!
I mean you can certainly wake them up pretty easy, I have a mildly built 302 in my Mercedes Coupe that makes around 300 hp, even with a tall gear ratio that 3400 pound car gets to 60 in 7 seconds. I do prefer the 351W for a heavy car however, that’s why on my ‘94 town car I have swapped in a 351W, I just haven’t had time to wire it up, that is all that’s left. Lots more low end torque with the 351W and great fuel economy.
@@CarswithNash 351w sounds pretty nice for a Town Car. Shame they never put those in from the factory. I always thought the little 302 and 4.6 were too small for a large luxury sedan like a Town Car. The 351 is still on the small side, but then again so are the downsized Town Cars. So a 351 seems to fit it a lot better in my eyes.
@matt77758 mine is not working on my 90 and was thinking of doing the same did you have to put a different sized belt on after the ac pump was removed?
light bearer Oh for sure, although they are getting on to 30yrs old now so how they have been cared for is actually the bigger question... If you find a good one the 1990’s in particular are a rock solid car. But like I say, it is 30yrs old so if it hasn’t been maintained it could still turn into a money pit.
Sorry looking at wrong cars data I’m push 300 ft lbs from around 1800 up until around 3200 then the curve drops evenly down to 260 at 6000 redline that has my townie pushing 295 when the rev limiter kicks
I ended up trading my 03 Cartier with 230k miles for a 90 Signature with all options but moonroof and 65k miles. Wow the 90 is so much softer and quieter.
I think your comparing luxury to a base model because my Grandpa's 89 town had both driver and passenger air bags a rear dimming mirror, and memory seat settings and his 93 town car with everything even had a 5.0 v8
brian reiss Sorry but you are mistaken, I’m very knowledgable on this era of Lincoln & I can assure you the ‘89 never had air bags nor did a ‘93 ever come with a 5.0 engine. None of the comparisons I did here had anything to do with the trim level of the cars. The only mistake I made is the wood trim was apparently available in the dark pattern on other years as well & I forgot the tilt levers were also different ‘90-‘91.
You are right so many people on here that doesn't know the options of the year and trying to sell to the public really bother me. I always throw something at someone when trying to read them and if they call b.s. or just go with it
Thanks for the vid, this is helpful for me because I have a mildly built EFI 5.0L I'm trying to find a home for. The 1990 TC's are an interest to me because of the factory fit 5.0L it's almost a direct drop in minus I need to do an MAF conversion. Either way this means I'm ending up with a 1990.
Guess it depends where and how you’re driving but the 5.0 does a lot better on the hills and I even pulled trailers with this one and it did really good. I once pulled 5500 lbs up a very hilly road with this car and it never hesitated. I also just love the simple durability of the 5.0.
Tomorria Austin Yes you do, I know you and your car from the Lincoln groups, thanks for stopping by! I’ve since parted with both these cars but I’m friends with the owner of my ‘90, it’s in good hands and I still have a ‘94 Town Car & an ‘80 Versailles, I plan to restore both on the channel one day, I just have a lot of projects on the go right now.
Tomorria Austin Very nice, I’d like to get an ‘80’s Town Car one day, they are a lot harder to find in my area then the 90’s ones, very classy looking cars.
Yes I have a 1982 Lincoln with a 5.0 I had a guy put a new carb on it now this other shop is having problems putting this new one on could you put me in touch with any one please can .you help me sir I only have 83;000 on it
Leroy Porter I’d be happy to help if I can. Could you describe the exact issue? Is it the fact they can’t find a replacement carburetor or are they having an installation issue?
Matt's Garage . Hello yes ma'am this is this is Leroy portal the problem that I'm here I'm having with that a new card already is this the guy that I had putting it on disappeared so I had it towed to the shop and got it hasn't at the shop is having problems starting he says that the carburetor isn't getting gas but I noticed that it's some of the parts that goes to the carburetor on that 302 5.0 has two balls and has to be connected I guess to the to the floor system soon as possible I really would appreciate that cuz I really need help with my car I've been out of it almost a year so no response I really appreciate that thank you looking forward from hearing from you
Leroy Porter Sorry for the delayed response... Honestly your description is lacking... Sounds like you are having trouble hooking up the throttle cable? Or are you referring to the accelerator pump linkage on the carb itself? Sorry but I would need a lot more details to offer any real advice. It does sound like you may need to find a more reputable mechanic...
Alan Christensen Everything works on that ‘91 yes, I did end up selling that car since this video (to a friend, it’s in good hands). I still drive the white ‘90 daily, in fact I have a 1.5yr ownership review coming up on the ‘90 soon.
@@CarswithNash That's cool that everything works. I just changed the fuel filter on mine for $60 at the local ford dealer. I was hoping they could help me with my power seat. Oh well, one broken power seat on mine, but still an easy motor to keep truckin'.
Alan Christensen Did you check the fuses? Also be sure nothing has jammed in the track. Wow $60! I guess that is probably the going rate but that is a very quick & easy job, I’ll have to do a video on it one day.
My seat just got old. I had a buddy who owns his own classic car repair who said the track was fine, gears look wore out. Ford just asked how deep I wanted to go into the beauty, and that the seat track has heavy wear. They didn't know if they could still get parts, but were willing to try. I had to say no. Hopping a seller will re list a certain seat track, or another will appear with memory and heat for a Cartier, and maybe the wife will finally say yes if it is a new year.
