Rangers fan here. I'm with you, I miss the sirens! Too many damn horns now. Remember NHL 94, the video game? "The siren is going to wail tonight!" was on the box...lol how times have changed.
The Devils siren was like a balloon losing air. Weak!! I could never hear it at a game. That’s bad bc we weren’t even loud. We only packed about 11,000 at most during the season. 19040 when the Rangers visited.
Your great ambassador of the game drove phoenix into bankruptcy, while mario has run his team to becoming the most profitable team in the league. So wayne was below mario on the ice,and in the front office.
@algorithmatic Yeah because overcoming cancer wasn't tough. You can't possibly compare it with Crosby, considering defenders got away with a lot more back then and literally would cheap shot him, but still couldn't stop him. There's a reason why Lemieux got standing ovations from New York fans in '93, Philly fans in '97, and Detroit fans in '09. People respect him, and you're a minority in comparing him to Sid.
If someone did this to Ovechkin in the playoffs, they would get way more than the punishment Graves got. Then again Ovechkin would have to win the Cup first, before he was trying to defend it the next year
You're talking about an incredible ambassador for the NHL. Someone who has arguably done more for community service and outreach than any other player in NHL history, have a little more respect. With that being said, it was a bad play, deserving of a suspension, and unfortunate that a hockey legend like Mario had to miss games with a broken hand/wrist.
The Rangers tried to take Mario out with a cheap shot and it backfired big time. The Pens rallied, took the high road and beat em in 6. Poetic justice. The Rangers totally DID NOT deserve to win that series. Pens win! Pens win!
Nobody returns from a broken wrist in a week. It's physically impossible. Sprained, maybe, but Mario came back in the next series and ran wild. That was great acting. I'd like to see the x-rays.
EXACTLY...PURE fabrication to gain favor! Just SO ironic that the Penguins have this mentality/design of play! First Lemieux....then passed onto/inherited by Crosby... ..BOTH (because high end players) CRY BABIES whom, because of it, the majority of the time get their way & UTILIZE it as much as they can!
@bbasher79 Well Right, both Graves and Sir Lemieux have done great things off the ice, but it is easy to see that Graves INTENTIONALLY did a 2 handed chop to Lemieux, and wasn't even aiming for his stick. Not exactly a shining moment
interesting how history comes full circle. Now its mario who as an owner is responsible for Matt Cooke. As far as Crosby goes his slew foot on Ryan Callahan tells me all I need to know
@bmatta25 You keep ignoring the fact that he went down and the team stated his wrist was broken, which was a complete fabrication. A week later he was playing again. It was a dive.
Lemieux broke his wrist cause he liked to wear those stupid short little gloves that gave no wrist protection. Having said that it was still a nasty little slash by Graves. As for whoever said Messier was a better player than Lemieux.....really? Like, really? Lemieux was one of the laziest players to ever play the game, but he was also probably the most talented. The guy scored 200 points with a bad back, and he was a heavy smoker who never practiced. Who the hell can do that?!
The great thing about this is that despite the fact that the Rangers knocked 80 goal scorer Lemieux and 50 goal scorer Mullen out of the series, they still only managed to win 2 games. You gotta feel pretty inferior as a team after that.
Rangers were without Messier this game and won and lost Graves for the entire series which hurt big time. Penguins had Mario in 93 and lost to an Islanders team WITHOUT Turgeon. A team the Rangers demolished the following season. How's that for feeling inferior?
@algorithmatic and as for the bandwagon fans comment I will definitely agree that there are a lot of people paying attention to the Pens now that they are relevant again and also a lot of people in Pittsburgh don't really know shit about hockey, but show me another organization that went through a long losing streak and still had consistent sell outs. You're not going to find it. I actually got to go to more games back then than I do now because the tickets were cheaper.
@algorithmatic Sounds like that would be on the team, not Lemieux. There are a lot of players who have come back quickly after minor fractures and other things of the sort. And I have a difficult time believing that you had access to Lemieux's medical records. Regardless of the fact it was a two handed axe chopping motion to the wrist. I don't see how you can possibly say its a dive.
I understand you're very passionate about your favorite player Mario, but to say Gretzky cant hold Marios jock is absurd. Gretzky is the not only the greatest hockey player but greatest ATHLETE in ANY sport. EVER. Please dont disrespect him like that. This is not a knock on Mario, but Gretzky had his share of health problems as well. After 1991 he had severe back problems yet still amassed a massive amount of points.
God rest his soul but this was typical roger nielse nonsense always going after the opposing teams top player in the playoffs. They did the samething to LaFontaine in the 91 playoffs.
@bmatta25 I know you probably just started following hockey like most fair-weather Pens fans. The team wouldn't have almost moved a few years back if you losers actually supported your team. The worst moment of his career was the fact that he FAKED a broken wrist, which forced the league into suspending Graves. A week later he was playing again...impossible if there was a break. Face it, your hero is a diver. PS- I'm a combat decorated US Marine, and Mario is a diving whiner.
You are a fucking nobody. So the plan was to suspend Graves and sit out Lemieux and miss playoff games? You are a fucking idiot. It's amazing how moronic some people are. He missed 12 days and 5 playoff games. If he was faking then why would miss so many playoff games douchebag? You are a pathetic little clown. You wrote this six years ago and the Rags still have only one Cup in the past 7 decades. LOL
Oh my God,anyone and i mean anyone who thinks Gretzky was the greatest ATHLETE EVER,is not only blind but stupid,Jim Brown,Bo Jackson,Deion Sanders,Michael Jordan,David Thompson,Lebron James,Dave Winfield,Jesse Owens,Jackie Robinson,Jim Thorpe,Jerry Rice,enough?? By the way,but you can't name the only player to retire from hockey averaging over 2 pts a game,it ain't number 99...
John Reynolds, the brilliant analytic talent of hockey. So if somebody hit you because of your stupid comment, ...than argues that it was because you should have known after writing that crap..., all would be fine?,...many will be on for that setup,...
@SuperTugz - You Pens fans are proving over and over your recent bandwagonish habits. Lemieux did NOT have a broken wrist - he faked it - leading to Graves's suspension. Lemieux never wore a cast, and played again 10 days later. It's over and over cited as one of the worst moments in his career. About cancer, tragic as it is - lots of people beat cancer - and God bless them all for doing it. That doesn't make Lemieux a great player because he did what many others do.
You are pathetic. I thought you said he came back a week later? Now it's ten days? Make up your mind. It was 12 days and five games missed dickhead. Nice comment about the cancer. You are a piece of shit.
The Graves "slash" on Mario wasn't even that bad. The reason Mario broke his hand was because he removed a lot of the padding from his gloves, and around the wrist area. He did this to have better control when holding the stick. Well, sorry Mario, but when you do that you run the risk of what happened here, which is injury. Graves is NOT a dirty player. Mario removed his padding, and got hurt because of it.
without a doubt the dumbest thing I've read in here, Lemieux got hurt because of what padding he didn't wear? The reason he missed the remainder of the series was because of Adam Graves slash, don't be a fucking idiot
You're a moron. Look at graves. He didn't even play on the puck - he skated up to Mario and swung at him. It was a dirty play. It's impressive how stupid some of you are.
Lemieux was, and always will be, a punk. He was a great player, but like Crosby, has absolutely no heart or toughness. Makes you wonder if he ever played pond hockey as a kid, or was he raised on organized hockey where the refs were there to blow the whistle every time it got a little rough. Waiting for this to be voted down by the fair weather Pens fans, who abandon their team when they're not winning....
@algorithmatic lmao you certainly know nothing about me and you clearly know nothing about hockey. If you two hand someone in the arm you are going to be suspended regardless if there is an injury or not. Your thoughts are irrelevant. PS thank you for your service as a US Marine, but wtf does that have to do with hockey? You don't know anything about Mario Lemieux. Anyone who follows the game knows Mario wasn't a whiner or a diver.
Adam Graves, not Wayne Gretzky. Maybe the next time you're off your meds and decide to lash out, you should read what you're replying to. Have a nice day!
