Rockets have Seattle all they could handle to a game 7 in OT. Seattle then took Phoenix to the brink. The 1993 west had Hakeem, Admiral, Shawn Kemp, Karl Malone and Barkley all in their prime. An absolute buzzsaw!

@blueblur2273
@blueblur2273 Год назад
@@dreamcage1801 They were deepest team in the league but they still didn't beat Phoenix. Beating the Rockets had more to do with matching up better against them than anything else. The Rockets struggled immensely bringing the ball up against the Sonics perimeter players and turned the ball over a ton which is why they went out and got Sam Cassell. Another problem was Perkins who with his length could play the center position and spread the floor with his shooting. This help lessen Hakeem's shot blocking and rebounding ability who had to go out to the perimeter to guard Perkins and if he didn't then the Sonics had the wide open 3.

It’s ironic that one of the things that stops people from appreciating the toughness of these 90s teams is that the Bulls won so many championships. It has resulted in younger people now being like “oh all those teams sucked and had plumbers on their team compared to Jordan and Pippen.” And then you watch clips like this and the Bulls weren’t even the pick of multiple analysts, which shows you the real merit of these other teams and the hard path that the Bulls did actually go through to win as much as they did. Between the 92 and 93 Knicks-Bulls series and the 98 series against Indiana, Jordan and co. had legit challengers to fend off for the title though, with Utah being no slouch in 97 or 98 either. The Sonics didn’t have the offensive power in 1996 to match but they did a bang up job on defense against the Bulls in several games of the series and had a deeper bench.

I wish I could like this video a MILLION TIMES!! LOL This video represents EVERYTHING that was great about early to mid 1990's NBA and broadcasting, and shows EVERYTHING wrong with the current NBA and the CLOWNS(Skip Bayless, Shannon Sharpe, Nick Wright, Stephen A.Smith, Colin Cowherd, Kendrick Perkins, etc.) who discuss the NBA on TV!! Listening to the professionalism of Bob Costas, Bill Walton, Quinn Buckner and Peter Vecsey, and hearing them talk about how truly competitive things were during those days is tremendous! Compare that to the GARBAGE nowadays. Also, there was always at least 4 or 5 teams who were a serious threat to win the title. About their picks, its funny how none of them had Phoenix playing Chicago for the title even though Chicago had won back to back titles and Phoenix had the best record in the NBA in 1993. They must have thought the Bulls would be too worn out to 3 peat. As for Phoenix, the lack of confidence in them must have been the fact that this was Barkley's 1st year playing for them, the other top teams in the West had playoff experience together.
@johnbrowntheprophet

None of them picked Phoenix to win the West because their defense was terrible. Notice the running theme here -> Rockets + Jazz = Defense.
@blueblur2273
@blueblur2273 Год назад
@@johnbrowntheprophet Yep and it's because of their lack of defense which is why they struggled so much in those playoffs. It took Barkley playing to herculean efforts to really carry his teams out of the West. Up until the NBA Finals that year Barkley really looked like he was on MJ's level. Of all of Jordan's rivals I'd say Barkley's 93 year was the best peak.

When Charles Barkley started with TNT as an analyst with his brashness from day 1, which was a carryover from how Chuck played the game and dealt with the media, this was at a time when sports analysts were still relatively uptight. Peter Vesey was no fan of Chuck’s style and gave TNT an ultimatum to either get rid of Charles Barkley or he was leaving….the rest is history. Stuart Scott and especially Charles Barkley are key reasons why sports analysts today as we know are as loose, brash, and outspoken as they are.

Obviously in the 31 years since these playoffs, history shows that the Bulls won the NBA finals to accomplish their 3 peat……..But going into the 1993 playoffs the Knicks were the best team in the east and the Suns were the best team in the west. For people now who ridicule the guys who picked the Knicks to advance to the finals probably weren’t even watching the NBA back then. In 1992 the Knicks took the Bulls to 7 games winning once in Chicago. They were even better in 1993 and had the home court advantage over the Bulls. They SHOULD have been picked to go to the finals. They took a 2-0 lead on Chicago, and in game 3 Michael shot 3 for 18. It was his teammates that bailed him out. The final 10 seconds of game 5 when Charles Smith choked directly under the basket 4 times was the defining moment of the series. Only ignorant NBA fans would say the Bulls should have been favored over New York going into the 1993 playoffs.

I think Walton had a bit of a point when he said that the Bulls were kind of a one-man team in the sense that Jordan needed to play even better than he had in the previous two Finals in order to beat Phoenix, and even then if the Paxson 3 didn't go in that's a Game 7 in Phoenix. Unrelated note but I like the intimacy that their format had, the small table size definitely worked well.

@@blueblur2273 Yeah Costas retired from NBC, Snapper died, Marv retired, Guokas retired, Fratello is way up there in age, Dick Enberg passed, Greg Gumbal is with CBS and only interested in the NFL....the only thing from the glory years that would return is probably Roundball Rock but we'd still get the dull PBP guys of the ESPN era and a bunch of bland color commentary guys. And that is without examining the play on the court which is a drop from the 90s.

The Knicks?? They used to be so tough and physical, but Jordan and Pippen owned them! As far as the west, if Ceballos wasn’t hurt, the Suns could have taken the Bulls to 7 games.

The Bulls weren't going to be denied no matter what. Knicks got complacent with a 2-0 series lead. Once the GOAT finally got beyond his bitter rival (Bad Boy Detroit Pistons) in 1991, nobody was stopping them.

@@grahamsmithnyc Yes, but in '93 they had home court advantage against the Bulls and I think they felt invincible at MSG up until that G5 loss in the ECF.

The Knicks had the better record in the regular season, so it was no surprise that people picked them to win. But we all know that the playoffs are very, VERY different.
