Thanks for compiling this. I barely followed football between 1993 and 1998 so never truly understood what went wrong in any detail. This goes some way to filling the gap.
That was such an elegantly-finessed long range finish by Bergkamp to end England's qualification hopes. Classic Bergkamp. Funny to hear the commentators calling him a flop at Inter.

in that game and in Norway it was horrendous keeping from Woods. This is the first time I've seen most of those games particularly the away ones but the whole campaign was shocking. Norway made us look silly.
@Alwaysred100 at that time, we were still stuck in the 70s playing "kick and run" football. Venables came along and we played a lot better under him. It's a shame he couldn't carry on, but we were decent under Hoddle after that.
Norway were really the surprise package both England and Holland underestimated them. Despite the defeat against the Dutch, it really started to go wrong with the 1-1 draw against Norway then especially throwing two goals away against Holland.
1:16 Weird how Norway in the 90's had identical kits to Premier league teams. Here they had Arsenal's kit, in 98 they had ManUtd's away kit. Actually i think I recall Scotland had ManUtd's away GK kit in Euro96.
The 2-2 home draw against the Netherlands was the game that eliminated England. Wouters smashed Gascoigne's cheekbone with his elbow when England were 2-1 up, escaped a red card and put England's best player out the game. England also had an obvious penalty not given before the late Dutch equaliser when Ferdinand was brought down.
hello gr8footy, ur videos are all really great, and great job for this old classic matches, specially from 70s, 80s, world cups. in ur channel, playlist, for example world cup 1966, there are only 2 videos, and says others are unavailable. its same situation with other world cups as well. is there any chance we can find this old world cup videos from u? any chance they can be uploaded again or similar? great job for this excellent work once again, this old games show how superb football standards were before compare to todays , players and matches. all best from stefan from serbia.
To not qualify with that group of attacking players is a shambles. Ferdinand, Shearer, Wright, Gazza, Platt. Imagine if we had all those now....yeh Southgate would only pick one of them. Another thing this reminds me of is just how big a deal it was when England beat anyone, look at the celebrations and the commentary against sides like Turkey in a qualifier. Not because we were shit but because the England team just mattered more then, the players were more relatable, national pride was more important (which in different contexts isn't necessarily a good thing). Everyone just cared more. One of the things that too much money in the game and it being too corporate has ruined.
@@biznaguinh4the decline of Chris Woods and Des Walker in defence didn't help. Agree though, the likes of Ferdinand and Wright were decent club players but not international class.
That was such a talented England squad, they should have secured qualififaction by themselves, not let it go down to a play-off against a Dutch squad with the likes of Bergkamp, Rijkaard, Wouters and Koeman.
Some wonderful attacking football on display. They should replace Southgate with this Graham Taylor fellow; he seems to know how to entertain the fans.
Ah, the good old bad old days. To be fair, we had great attacking players and the goalkeeping was ok. But we couldn't defend. The defenders for the most part were second-rate. Some the attacking moves were really good. But I think Taylor was the wrong man. He had a black cloud over his head, he was just a Jonah, bad luck followed him at every turn. The ref in the Holland match was also a disgrace, and Koeman a disgrace for conning him. Ok, maybe even if it had been a penalty we might have missed...end of day, we should have beaten Norway at home and got a point in Oslo away. End of.
Don’t worry we always have over rated players in the team GERRARD 114 CAPS …… and done NOTHING . Never ever ever ever did he do anything when it mattered most . 🙄
When Koeman fouled Platt it was outside penalty box , should have been free kick not pen, also should have been automatic red card ....the Dutch knew they got lucky that day , ref was dodgy
It’s not that GT had bad luck over him - he just wasn’t suited to International football, it’s that simple. He was a decent man and proud Englishman who was tactically out of his depth at that level. The club ban on English teams from Europe in ‘85 to ‘90 had a big knock on effect. The football he played was too direct and not focused enough on good possession of the ball - as a result they always put pressure on themselves with the frantic hi tempo pinball style. The difference when Venables took over, with a lot of the same players, says everything. Venables had managed Barcelona and had a different tactical outlook. GT played the same way as he did in the 80’s English first division.
It's funny watching this as someone born in 86. I recognise so many of the Norwegian players. People think they have a good team now but aside from Haaland and Ødegaard you'd be hard pushed to name any of their players.
Baggio was, by some distance the best player in world football in 1993, a worthy Ballon d'Or winner in 93 making a developing Juve team under Lippi look alot better than they actually were. Baggio was able to manage his knee issues in this period and was at his prime. Romario, Hagi, Papin and Matthaus good shouts. Gascoigne & Van Basten were entering a period plagued by injuries and inconsistent at club level due to injuries, leading in Van Bastern's case to retiring in 95. Bergkamp's prime was still to come circa 97-98 but by which time Zidane was on the scene.
😂 ridiculous wasn't it but on a serious note a read that as a kid if didn't do that he would be beaten by his parents so it became a habit put of fear of the old beating
Yeah, happened a fair bit for Barnes. England fans felt he kept getting picked without playing well. Always known for their measured responses, England fans.
He got booed all the time for England as he never really played well for them and he identified as Jamaican which never went down well as a lot of people think you shouldn't let your country down like Rice and Grealish today who are Irish
Holland away was a disaster. Koeman should have been sent off, then scores that free kick after being gifted a second attempt....watched it live at time, was gutted. But boy, did we have some shite in that team, carlton palmer tried hard, but was fucking dreadful. Merson was great for Arsenal, but for me was very poor for england. Tony dorigo ffs, how did he get in the team ?.
SIMPLY GENIUS GAZZA! WHAT A PLAYER! I STILL DONT GET WHY HE WASNT IN THE 1998 SQUAD, GLENN HOODLE WAS A BASTARD, PAUL GASCOIGNE PROLLY THE BEST PLAYER TO WEAR THE ENGLAND TEAM SHIRT LAST 40 YRS. NOBODY EVEN CLOSE IN QUALITY , HEART AND COURAGE.
It's because Hoddle was always trying to prove something. Tim Sherwood said that Tottenham training sessions under Glenn were always about letting the players know that they were nowhere near as good as Hoddle in his prime. With Gazza, he wanted to appear intelligent and shrewd. He's actually neither.
Do you mean England going out early or the human rights abuses we will see and the ratcheting up of tension when the Qatari police are faced with lots of LGBTQ+ fans, and women, and alcohol consumption (surely that is allowed somewhere??) As for England it'll be all right on the night, and if it isn't, then Gareth can take his waistcoat and depart - before he's sacked, of course.
Since then Euro 96 World Cup 98 Euro 2000 World Cup 2002 Euro 2004 …… ….. World Cup 2022 NOTHING HAS CHANGED only boring shearer is on every footy programme 🙃
I don't care what anyone says as far as the Holland game, the yanks and with the help of the dutch, and the ref made sure the English did not make not make that WC, because they did not want any of our fans/hooligans there, but little did they know that the worst disaster in football happened in Lima Peru, look it up, I read it as my English homework, and what I read was shocking, that being said some of the chances in that campaign that the strikers did not take is a joke, that being said I believe that we were robbed, like in 86'.....but it is what it is.....
Total BS. Pause the video at 1:16:19. Rijkard isn't even close to offside and yet the goal called offside. That was a goal all day long. You got so mad over the "red card" that wasn't, you of course ignored an even worse call the Dutch were victims of. It should've been 1-0 and guess what? The "red card" never happens. Unlike England? Holland overcame that and won anyway. You? Are bitter and pathetic.
So what did the conspirators do? I just see a lot of limited English players out there…one dimensional footballers. Managed by a turnip. That’s why you didn’t qualify.
@@anthonymcken6050 becos ur press overhype a bunch of average talent like they are the 1970 Brazilian squad, and won't let us have peace should they have won!
Me too, but it's because the media becomes more neutral and you can just sit back and enjoy the football festival without the nerve shredding emotional investment.
