To support my efforts to create more clips please donate to me at www.patreon.com/allinaday. This is not a movie. These are clips that were put together after we asked people how they were experiencing the General Magic Personal Hand Held Communicator by Sony using the AT&T PersonaLink network. Of course the network doesn't exist and neither does General Magic. John Sculley recently called it " the greatest company that nobody ever heard of."

The poor Magic Cap has been forgotten, but someone just recently made a movie about the Newton. General Magic, really never had a chance, especially with the Newton in the picture. but yeah, Sculley was right. Lots of great people there, and it was another cool device that was ahead of its time. Thanks for this. I have some fond memories of those days--would have loved to have that first guy's Powerbook 540c in those days. I just had my Newton and a Mac Classic that I toted everywhere with me (I drove, didn't fly)

Yes, Jon. I think that the movie is excellent and 28 minutes of the film is footage I shot back then when I was a VP at General Magic. Have you seen the film? David Hoffman - filmmaker

Not yet. I just bought it finally, and plan to watch it in the next couple days. :-) It's cool that you've got footage in it.

I worked on OnStar which was developed by General Magic. I had figured they were part of General Motors. It looks like the name was a coincidence

I was fascinated by the General Magic device back then, but never owned one. I had two generations of Newtons, however, which also fascinated me. I still have one of them. They were very much ahead of their time -- at least in what they strived for. Newton's main input -- handwriting recognition -- might have been about 97% accurate at best, but that was not good enough for them to be practical. So, ultimately more of a tech-geek hobby than a true time-saving device.

It was cool back then to think that all your personal stuff was in this little machine and nobody ever even thought of the software being able to invade and sell all of that personal stuff.

David, I’ve been following your channel for a while now and while I love the stuff you post I don’t understand your context. Are you a journalist or documentary film maker? Is this your footage that you’ve compiled over the years? What’s your story?
@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker

Thank you for the question. I am a documentary filmmaker. Not a journalist. I have made hundreds and hundreds of documentaries in my career almost all for others-corporations-startups-foundations-government organizations-and on occasion I made a film on my own nickel. This is a film I made back then when I worked inside the company as vice president. One of my jobs was to create films and this is a sample of a rough cut (a professional term) for something which will become a film but is still in its rough stages. I thought some of my subscribers might find it of interest as might other viewers interested in the technology that was new and exciting at that time. David Hoffman-filmmaker

David Hoffman Thanks for the reply. I’m a rabid documentary watcher and I have to say that all of your stuff keeps me glued to the footage. I especially enjoyed the stuff about people telling their stories about surviving the 1960s. Keep it coming.

I just watched Mr Hoffman's recent excellent video, and that brought me here. Curious how Apple has changed. Essentially, now a corporate monopoly. High prices, fighting 'right to repair'[they glue batteries in place-and utilize other destructive practices to generate profit], abysmal customer service, planned obsolescence, questionable labour practices, etc. Not really representing the 'average' consumer anymore. More like a cult than a 'mom and pop' type company in my opinion.

they talk about at&t innovation and genuine customer support and research. but their devices look really crappy, low productivity. those monochorome displays and low resolution monitor. and they were investing so much energy in that work, but from todays perspective they have no productivity and no devices to be productive with.

State of the art at the time. Shitty LCD's were the only battery-friendly displays...even some early laptops had these.
