ABOUT JAY LENO'S GARAGE ON CNBC
Hosted by legendary comedian and “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, the series explores our obsession with all things automotive. From classic cars to supercars and everything in-between, Jay is hitting the road to discover the most exciting, weird and wonderful vehicles ever made and meet the passionate people behind their wheels. Each one-hour themed episode features a mix of stunts, challenges, reviews, and celebrity interviews that showcases the colorful history of the automobile. Whether he’s exploring the story of an iconic brand, road-testing the newest super car, or investigating the latest automotive innovations, there is no wheel Jay won’t get behind to tell the story of our love affair with the car.
About Jay Leno: Acclaimed TV late night show host, admired stand-up comedian, best-selling children’s book author, much-in-demand corporate speaker, lovable TV and movie voice-over artist, pioneering car builder and mechanic, and philanthropist…it’s no wonder that Jay Leno is widely characterized as “the hardest working man in show business.”

@@OAwesomeO unlikely. He wears denim and goes out of his way to fabricate items that he could easily purchase. According to him, he’s never spent a dime of his Tonight Show money. He has money and buys nice things, but I think he’s frugal-and that doesn’t change for some people. I’ve been to some developing countries where I was the equivalent of a millionaire. That didn’t stop me from being the cheapskate that I usually am. $20 isn’t much money, but it’s a lot for a pack of gum. Likewise, Jay knows 80 grand is a lot for a car.

It was my favourite car when I was a kid in the 90s in the UK. They're exceedingly rare here. I've seen more McLaren F1s and Jaguar XJ220s. I never got to see a viper until about 2013, and it was the later style one. It was being driven very conservatively on a track. I flew past it in a Cayman.... I've seen a couple of the very early RT10s now, but I'm still dying to see a blue GTS like this one. Brings back so many memories.

@Seamus McShamish I get your disappointment but remember that inflation is a thing. I thought the prices of pretty much all of the cars you mentioned have skyrocketed, but in reality if I compare the buying power of what they were worth back in the day to the buying power of what they are worth today there's not much difference. Sure, an E30 was worth 15 grand when I first looked them up, now they are worth 100+, but back then you could rent a nice place for 3-5 years for that money, today in the same part of town you can rent the same place for 3-5 years for 100k. The prices haven't increased tenfold, it just seems that way, sure in other parts of the world you don't have as much inflation but the western world is very affected by it, especially Germany. Pretty much all of our classics are still worth what they were worth 10 years ago, they increased in value about 30-50% but over the same period of time our buying power has been reduced by 30-50%. Now just to make sure you understand what I'm saying: they are worth exactly the same, there is at least ten times as much money around now so obviously they will be priced higher but the only reason why we can't afford them anymore is because we didn't get major salary increases, the companies now keep the profits to themselves whereas back in the day it was normal to hand out shares of your company and annual profits to your employees. So they cost the same but we just don't have as much money anymore. There are exceptions, obviously, and I think an E30 M3 did increase in value a bit, but if you drove it a litte, paid taxes and insurance in Germany you would net about 0$ profit.... if you look at it this way you haven't made to much losses, if you're sad about the way you spent your money then be sad that you didn't invest in property inside a booming city or something, I could name you a lot of opportunities you had back then which would have created at least twice as much profits with less risk, also many business opportunities give you income while a car is just a risky object of speculation. It would be really sad if you wanted any of these cars back because they cost so much now, but if you're just sad that you didn't keep them long enough to make a profit then you shouldn't beat yourself up about it. You could have easily made a loss speculating that the value of these cars will go up, in my book cars don't even count as investments unless you're buying a limited edition Ferrari and flipping it, unless you're buying a rare car looking to keep your money instead of increase it.

Jay, I drove a '96 Viper Coupe from Detroit to Philadelphia in the rain. Surprisingly it was a very pleasant drive despite the fact that you did not want to give it too much throttle in first 4 gears in heavy rain. It climbed through the Pennsylvania mountains in 6th gear without any effort. It had none of the wind noise that you get in the roadster so it made driving quite pleasant. Of course the handling in the corners at speed was amazing. While I was down there I took the car across Smithbridge Road off route 52 north of Wilmington, Delaware. If you haven't been there before that is Andrew Wyeth country with beautifully paved, 17th century "cowpaths" that wind around throughout the majestically wooded hills. It is a very picturesque road but challenging at speed. I was very familiar with those roads as I grew up near there and had driven my Corvettes (a '62 C1 roadster, a '66 C2 roadster and a '65 C2 coupe - not owned all at the same time) across those roads many times. Of course the Viper handled those curves and dips beautifully and was a real joy. P.S. I didn't get to sign the fender of your car but I was involved in its creation. How Viper came to be is a great story all in itself.

Whenever I see a Corvette and Viper next to each other, they look like a couple of bros just hanging out. They may be rivals but it was never ugly. Just two dudes upping their games and having fun doing it. I wish Chrysler had kept that in mind towards the end. Maybe the end would not have come when and as it did.
@user-ry3no8mc6z

It's the worst mistake Chrysler/Dodge did when they stopped producing it. As a European I can tell you that the Viper was one of the very few American cars Europeans get excited when they see it (the other being a corvette and a ford GT) . It was that good and everyone wanted to drive it. Now that it's gone and its place is the challenger hellcat almost no one gets excited for it and everyone thinks it's just a god awful looking car despite being great. Too bad
@DocWolph
@DocWolph 3 года назад
@@user-ry3no8mc6z I'm okay with the Challenger. But I understand what you mean. The car is too big, heavy, the engine is comparatively underpowered next to the Mustang GT and Camaro SS, except the top tier models, Hellcat, Hellcat Red Eye, and Demon. But the Viper was Chrysler being serious about automotive sports, like Ford and GM. And it was a monumental mistake to discontinue the instead of just fixing the line-up, which should have led with convertibles but adding them late would have been fine. Not advancing the tech, adding a DCT/DSG as an option would have been extremely helpful to sell more cars. Truthfully there is a lot FCA/Chrysler did wrong with the Viper, including going this long without any sign they are going to fix it.
@user-ry3no8mc6z
@user-ry3no8mc6z 3 года назад
@@DocWolph the irony is that the srt brand with a separate factory that didn't belong to Dodge would have helped to "dodge" the now emission standards in Europe that every manufacturer with exception of Supercar brands like Ferrari or hypercars like the Koeniggsegg have to achieve carbon emissions below 95gr of CO2 if the cars exceed 20.000 sold per year. That meant that Srt could produce the 8.2 V10 for a very long time before they had to eventually downsize. Add the options you mentioned and it's bizarre as to why Chrysler never allowed it to happen. But who knows? Maybe other interests of Chrysler were interfering with the Viper project being eventually cancelled

THIS Viper is my childhood poster car, had multiple 1:18 scale models of it in different colors too. It looks amazing, even better than alot of modern cars today. The shape, the rims, the stripes, iconic beyond belief. The last Viper we had around 2013 or so with the ACR swansong, was amazing too, back to form and the very last proper driver focused super car with a manual to exist. With all the success the Hellcat platforms and Trackhawks etc, have had, I hope Dodge can find it in their budget to bring the Viper back. However, if they can only bring it back as a hybrid or something, DON'T. If we can't bring it back bigger and better than ever, let it rest in peace as the one car ALL automotive enthusiasts should love.

Dear Jay, I've been taking care of my father for the past decade with a pretty grim looking future for myself as a result due to the lack of a career I am now set with, also due to battling depression my entire life. I've been a nut for this exact car since it was debuted on Car and Driver the tv show back in 1996 when it came out. I was 10 years old, in my last year of elementary and I brought my best friend over to show him. Since then anytime someone I knew saw one they had to say something like better hide that or he'll pass out etc. It was also my high school year books life ambition and fate. If you ever wanted to give someone happiness for life, let me hang on to that car for you. I'd keep it exactly as is it for as long as I live. I can't say I've ever asked for anything like this, and feel shame doing it now, but I have faith anything is possible in life and you are a god among men so.. Of course I don't expect anything to become of this, and if by chance you even read this I wish you all the best and good health for all the years to come. ❤
