I have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars trying to fix my transmission hunting gears issue buy trouble shooting and taking to transmission shops and mechanic shops and no one could figure out what the issue was then I came across your video and low and behold $31.00 dollars later and my problem is fixed. @@troyt9007 Did your speed sensor come with a replacement bolt? I had a heck of a time getting the speed sensor bolt off, and it is still stuck to the original sensor! I have been trying an hour to get the bolt out of the old sensor and the new one does not come with a bolt. Did your bolt come out no problem or did you use a different bolt altogether?
@@Reagan.Frakes No it doesn't come with a new bolt. Mine came off very easy. The sensor is just made of plastic. And what it threads into is plastic Are you sure you're taking off the right part? I can't imagine it bring that hard to get out. If so then just break the old sensor to get the bolt out.
I got a 97 dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel cummins my problem is that my RPM needle keeps bouncing alot and when i get to 40 mph i kind of losses power any ideas

Yeah I think so. It would shift very erratic and with the higher rpm's I think it just didn't know what to do. It's been awhile. Sorry. Don't remember all the details.
Yes I did. The only issue I had with that is the fuel tank in my truck is a different size than the one the "new" computer came out of. So as a result, my fuel will run out when my gauge says I still have 1/8th of a tank left. Learned that the hard way. 🙄. Probably could be re-programmed by a mechanic with a computer, but I never did anything about it. Not sure.
I have a 2000 5.9 2wd dodge 1500 and it doesn’t want to shift on time. It stays high rpms and I have to let go of the Gas. My dash doesn’t go crazy but my rpms do stay high.
I'm actually having the same problem as you're describing myself. I even had the check engine light on so I plugged in a code reader and it was saying that it was the vehicle speed sensor, so I replaced it again, but it didn't work. So I'm still trying to figure it out. If I find out for sure I'll let you know

Well I'm not sure. I'm actually having the same problem myself. The transmission has a hard time shifting unless I let off on the gas slightly. I even had a code saying that it was the output speed sensor, so I replaced it again, but it didn't fix it. My check engine light went off by itself, but still having the same problem. I don't know how yours is acting, but I will say that if it won't shift at all then it could be a throttle position sensor that has gone bad. I have the engine out of my daughters truck right now, so I haven't had time to mess with mine. Just been putting up with it. If I find something out soon I'll let you know.
You replaced your neutral safety switch first. The part that you want that directly effects your shifting is the transmission solenoid aka the trans pressure solenoid aka transmission control solenoid that is located inside of the transmission pan on a 2wd or 4wd 2nd gen. Easy to replace.
My 95 is jerky all the sudden and the speedometer is going nuts. I will give his a shot. I tried the abs wheel speed sensor but didn’t fix it. So I’ll give this a shot
Why doesn’t the old connector work with the new sensor? It’s the same sensor right? It’s not like the plug just goes bad everytime the sensor stops working

Make note that this man says that he is not a mechanic. He didn't see the correct part, TRANSMISSION CONTROL SOLENOID, because it's in the transmission right above the pan. The part that he replaced will fix speedometer issues or at least will register on speedometer when failure occurs, it does not effect your gears changing, or under power, high rpm due to gear not changing.
It is true that I'm not a mechanic. I hate to break it to you, but replacing that part did fix my problem and it absolutely does have something to do with how the transmission shifts. I wouldn't have posted the video otherwise. It tells the computer how fast you're going so it knows when to shift.
I'm not trying to put you down. I see in your comments to other people that you are suggesting that this may or may not be their issue. More than likely it's not. That's not what the speed sensors failure looks like. Just doing my duty to inform people who really need their trucks operating for work, life, etc... This is a good video and you seem like a nice guy. Just throwing out a more reasonable solution.
@@egw5454 Ok. Well then could you explain to everyone why when I had this problem my code reader showed the code PO720 which is the vehicle output speed sensor. And when I replaced the sensor my speedometer went back to normal and my shifting went back to normal and the code disappeared and check engine light didn't come back.
Troy, you have a code reader but those of us with earlier 2nd gens do not, and the it is tough to narrow this problem down with odb1. That's why I was telling people who may read these comments to basically understand that this was your experience but is usually not the cause of screwy gears etc. There tons of forums and places where guys struggle to pin point some of these second gen Rams, odb1.
The reason I said that you didn't have the right part was because you said that the correct part in the diagram was apart of trans on near the pan. You were also not sure if the name since they were called different things. Relax, it's all good man.
It could be, but I would lean towards it being a bad throttle position sensor. But not knowing exactly what yours is acting like, it's hard to say. Usually when a TPS goes bad it will start out revving up to high rpms when it should be shifting. Then if you let off the gas a little, it will finally shift. Eventually it will get bad enough that it just won't shift at all. Also might die sometimes when you come to a stop. That's been my experience anyway. Good luck. Thanks for watching
@@troyt9007 now that you mention the TPS it starts up in really high RPMs and then when i switch to drive they get lower. Also sometimes the RPMs goes almost dead sometimes when i slow down at stop signs. Thank you very much for your answer. Great video.
Please get back to me ASAP my speedometer goes crazy and it doesn’t accelerate right like I accelerate and rpm goes up for second then drops replaced first one you showed in video could it be the second one you showed
Yeah. I think so. That's actually the speed sensor for your speedometer. There are other sensors in the transmission that can cause loss of speed also, but with your speedometer going crazy that's the most likely one
Hey. I'm sorry I'm just now getting to your comment. Somehow I missed it til now. I might be too late. I'm not 100% sure on that, but I'm thinking it might be the pressure solenoid and sensor. The solenoid is actually a pressure/overdrive solenoid, so there's a good chance that that's the problem. I had a similar problem, but if I remember right, I couldn't even shift that high. I had to go back roads to get home because the rpm's were too high to get on the highway. It's pretty easy to do and not too expensive either. Although it is a messy job, as most transmission work is when you have to drop the pan. I would also recommend adjusting the bands while you're in there, as one of the adjustment bolts is inside. Again, It's easy. I wasn't able to film it at the time because I had too much going on and had to get it back on the road. If it shifts three times that would be normal and and after the third time shifting you would be in 4th gear. You start in 1st when you pull into drive. 😂 unless I’m misunderstanding .
Hello I replaced the sensor in the transmission with a brand new one and the speedometer still does not work do I have to change is there one in the rear end that I have to change or what else would I have to do please reply back
Hey there. Well the reason I replaced that sensor was because the truck wasn't shifting when it was supposed to. Having said that. My speedometer was going crazy with the old sensor. It was jumping and bouncing all over the place. When I replaced the sensor, it did fix it. I don't know if yours isn't moving at all or what, but the only thing I could suggest is going a little deeper and taking that whole speed sensor unit out. Where it actually goes into the transmission or transfer case (wherever yours is located). There should be a U shaped bracket with one bolt holding it on. There is a plastic gear on there and that's the gear that spins and sends the info to your speedometer. Telling it how fast you're going. They're not very expensive. $15 - $20 I would guess. I don't know for sure if that's your problem. I'm not a mechanic. Just a suggestion. Hope this helps. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Are you sure you have 5 gears? Should only be 4. 1st, 2nd, Drive & Overdrive. When you say it feels like you're hauling something, do you mean it's running at a higher rpm or you just don't have power? I know you didn't mention it, but does it ever die or act like it's going to when you come to a stop? Right now with your description it sounds a little like a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)
Troy T 🤔your right. I have 4 gears. Anyways, twice at idle after a few minutes of starting the truck it stalled unless i kept reving it. I change the tps and the iac sensors so far no stalling. When it shifts to to overdrive the rpm drops and it feels like im pulling something when around 50-60mph. The rpm is usually around 1200 i believe. Its my first truck so im not sure if this is normal. I have a 6 speed accord as my daily. Forgot to mention before changing the tps and iac on second gear i noticed i had to let off the gas to make it shift to thw next gear.
Sorry it took so long for me to respond. Been busy. I'm not sure, but it still could be the output sensor. Mine runs at 1500 rpm at 55 mph. I do have a 5.9l in mine so that might a difference. I used to have a 5.2l, but I swapped it out. I'm actually in the middle of making another video on my truck. If I can ever find time to finish it. I'll tell you what's happening. Maybe that'll help. After I made this video and changed the output speed sensor it did't take long (about 4 months) and it was back to being slow to shift again. Speedometer was acting fine and it wasn't doing that shuddering when I would get on it. Just trouble shifting. And not every time either. I've let it go for awhile because it's just been a slight nuisance and no big deal. If I let off the gas a little it would finally shift and settle into the right gear. I figured the new output sensor had gone bad again. So, then about 3 weeks ago it started dying on me when I would come to a stop and it wouldn't go into overdrive. No matter what I did it wouldn't shift, so driving down the highway it would run at really high rpm's. I was pretty sure that it was the TPS because it had happened before and I replaced it. I hooked up the code reader and I had 3 codes showing. The codes were PO441- Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow PO121 Throttle Position Sensor and PO720 Output Speed Sensor Circuit. Don't know what the PO441 is , but its shown that one for awhile. Could be a lot of things. So I replaced the TPS. That took care of the dying problem and the not going into overdrive. So now I'm back to where I was. I wanted to wait just a little to see how it's acting rather than replace them both at the same time. Just need to have time to change the output speed sensor now. I have receipts for both. The TPS didn't cost me anything and neither will the speed sensor. Btw that was the third TPS I've replaced. 12/15, 8/16 & 6/18. The speed sensor was replaced 12/17. So be sure to keep you receipts. Hope this helps.
Doesn't sound like the same issue. Take it to O'Reilly's, Advance or AutoZone or one of the other parts places and have them hook up a code reader to it. Should tell you what the problem is. Most of those places will do it for free. Good luck
Well I'm not sure. I'm not a mechanic, but I'll try to help if I can. What year truck do you have? What symptoms did you have before you put the new sensor on? After you put the new sensor on, did it start to shift ok at all or it made no difference?
Sounds like that's what it is.There are other things that can cause that too. Depending on how it's acting. Usually it will stay at high rpm's until you let off of the gas a little. Then it will shift and settle into the gear it's supposed to. If you haven't already, I would suggest hooking up a code reader to it. Most of the time it will show up as an error code. Even if your check engine light isn't on it could still show a code. If you don't have a reader you can take it to some of the parts houses (O'Reilly, Autozone, Advance etc.) and they'll hook it up for free
Yeah. That could be. There have been a lot of faulty electronics coming out lately. A friend of mine and I have both encountered that in the last few years. Makes it damn hard to troubleshoot problems. Like I said in the video. I'm no mechanic, but I have had that truck for a very long time and there's not much I haven't done to it and in many cases, several times. I don't know what you're experiencing or what your truck is or the year, but some other things that can cause a shifting problem the throttle position sensor,(located on the top of the engine. Right below where the air filter attaches to the throttle body). Another is the Governor pressure switch and governor pressure solenoid (located under the transmission pan). But if you replaced that part and it made it worse. In my opinion, you're in the right spot. Hope this helps. Good luck
