An unfairly slagged little wonder of a machine. Amazing visibility meant you became a parallel parking god, well spaced pedals meant you could drive and sit comfortably as a man and the skinny tyres meant it was like a mountain goat in the snow. The lack of power steering and driver aids on basic models meant you felt more integrated in the driving experience too. Loved the three I had.

I had a 1999 Micra Profile 3dr for a few years in the early 2000's. Behaved absolutely flawlessly, felt so well made. The one thing that stuck in my mind was the quality of the paint (bright red), I've never had a car since that would polish up quite like it! Miss it, part exchanged for a Fiat Grande Punto Sport which looked cool but was massively unreliable.

Great vid as usual! Especially as this was the car that saved british mass manufacturing of cars in the north east of the UK. It's a shame Nissans current line up of models are not more like the bullet proof models of this era - and older. The K11 Micra Micra was a good case in point. A well designed, built and engineered car. Far superior than the current rebodied Renault Clio. Nissan need to distance themselves from Renault or better kill off the alliance.

Let's get the facts straight here - Nissan were skint. However reliable or wonderful you may have thought they're products were - they weren't selling and the company was very very close to going under. Without Renaults intervention and controlling interest Nissan would be no more - its as simple as that.

I bought a Micra Shape new in 1998 for £6k. I kept it in the family for nearly 20 years. Both kids learned to drive in it and used it regularly until they got their own cars. It hardly ever failed an MoT and even survived an encounter with a 4x4 on a roundabout in Sheffield. It finally died with 125k on the clock when the gearbox failed. Most reliable car I have ever had.

im building a kawasaki ZX9r powered k11 micra on my channel. i love the things. I've had Evo8, V6 MR2 and 309 GTI. i can honestly say my k11 micra Super S was the most fun I've ever had on the track. with a few modifications, that 76hp from the 1.3 can be easily squeezed to 130hp reliably thanks to the euro emissions regulations requiring 2 cats and a lean running engine. Interesting fact, during the 90s and early 2000s, the k11 micra was the most prolifically used rally car in Europe. and is still used extensively today. it is now allowed to join in with the classic mini in "mini-cross" rallycross racing (998cc and 1275cc interestingly) and the 1.0 micra had its own rally class called "junior 1000" there are a few turbocharged ones around the world, two most powerful ones here in the UK with 240 and 350hp respectively. people who call them names or don't respect them as they should, should realise that after 28 years, there are still more k11 micras on the road than Peugeot 106, ford ka, mk1 clio, fiat 600, fiesta mk3, etc etc. there's a reason for that.

The first car I drove was a Datsun 1200 (Nissan in Japan). I adore the K11, I have a 1.3 Super S, a 1.3 SLX and a 1.0, and I offered another one to my daughter. I have already Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Honda, etc., but in reliability, until 2000, Nissan was ahead of all!

Owned an early 1995 1.3 LX with the futuristic CVT gearbox for 20 odd years until 2018 when it eventualy rotted into nothing after a few years of welding. Only thing that ever went wrong with it was the glove box fell off :). And the 1.3 CVT model went like stink off the mark! Used to suprise much bigger cars at the traffic lights and overtaking.
@markpenrice6253
@markpenrice6253 5 лет назад
My aunt and uncle had one for a while and it was a ludicrous rocketship from a standing start despite the unexceptional engine output. Possibly the only time a CVT has been any good for improving performance (though IDK what it did for the economy), essentially giving you a perfect racing driver high rev launch if you stomped the throttle, and avoiding the usual lull between 1st and 2nd. No idea what it was like at high speeds but I have some very clear memories of bombing around in it when getting lifts from a leadfooted uncle... that plus the toytown suspension would literally make your head spin.

@@markpenrice6253 Yup i loved mine it was a lot of fun and at higher speeds it was pretty average but off the mark it was a little rocket up to 60 . The original factory times for 50 to 70 mph overtaking where quicker than a Nissan 300zx. I still have the magazines from the 90`s showing that.

I bought my brand new (to date the only new car I've ever bought) Micra "Shape" in 1996, a trim level which was absolute poverty spec, although it did have exactly the same seat fabric as this car. Mine did not have power steering and it didn’t need it. Oh yeah, I see your car has a clock on the dash, mine did not have that. Nor did it have a rear wiper. My car's exterior colour was "Cassis", i.e. blackcurrant purple. I got ripped to bits by my mates for buying a "granny's car". I defended it on two levels: the build quality was superb and the twin-cam sixteen valve fuel injected engine was a little jewel. Around the same time my mate bought a brand new Rover 100 'Kensington' (or one of the other nonsensical faux-posh special editions) and the gulf in quality was very apparent when you put them side by side. Despite my fondness for the car, I bowed to peer-pressure after about 18 months and sold it on, I think it was shortly after some attractive girl said something like "Why the **** are you driving a car like THAT?".

It was a basic as they come no power steering no centre console no electric anything and a very basic heating and radio system. It was his first car. I also learned to drive in it. It was great for doing handbrake turns in lol but not very good on bad roads or for passing anyone in with its tiny 900cc engine. He eventually changed it for a brand new 1999 MK 1 Ford Focus. Possibly a common thing to a lot of old city cars with simplistic suspension designs. Wouldn't be surprised to find that with something resembling McPherson struts at the front but a simple torsion-bar and swingarm setup at the rear, and the acres of bodyroll suggest it doesn't even have an anti-roll bar, which will only magnify the effect as the weight gets flung around all over the place when you come on and off the throttle (and even in the K12, the understeer was truly epic, leaving plenty of opportunity for the excess lock you'd then put on to suddenly bite, snatch, and flip right round into oversteer). My vaguely similar vintage Polo had just such a setup, with the mild benefit of a vaguely effective ARB (though VW forumites swore blind that one of the best things you could do was fit an equivalent bracer between the rear shocks... and an extra one up front), and even with the best tyres I could afford (some midmarket Michelin Energys) you could, on a damp roundabout, transition it between understeer, four-wheel drift, and a sudden, snapping, almost impossible to counter (unless you were VERY quick with steering wheel and throttle) oversteery about-face. Which was actually an improvement from its characteristics on generic budget rubber. A friend's Panda was even worse, it essentially eschewed the idea of handling altogether and just bounced around all over the place. There was one time we took a particularly tight town centre roundabout at such speed, five-up, that I swear the only logical explanation for our safe traversal and the stomach churning sensations I experienced was that they managed to synchronise with the car's wacky handling and the potholes of the approach road _just-so_ as to deliberately take off and sail over the top of it, like a cyclist doing a bunny hop. Thank god the only time they ever saw more than about 45 out of it was when we embarked on a knowingly pitiful race down the local bypass, where they just beat me (...ie, I didn't have to suffer it as a terrified passenger).

Ah, the days when manufacturers actually tried to keep small cars, yknow... small. Nissan was actually a holdout amongst them until recently, which was one of the reasons I ended up buying a K13. It was the only supermini class car that hadn't bloated considerably since the 90s (many of them that started out around 360cm long were now sailing past 4 metres), and so would still fit in my poky garage with room for a bike as well. Not sure what I'll do to replace this one if I'm still living at the same address, to get something with similar interior room and overall spec. Might have to sacrifice boot space and buy an as-high-spec-as-possible Up or Twingo (or maybe an i10, which a neighbour recently replaced his oldskool Punto with), plus a roofbox.

@@markpenrice6253 I have an N16 Almera and I handed the keys back on my 1960s rented lock up garage because I ended up whacking the wing mirrors on the door frames. Anyone with a modern SUV has little chance. A K13 would be a good replacement for it.

I love to see that people are preserving "boring" old cars like this, of course every exotic sports car like a Ferrari or Lamborghini will preserved so I think it's awesome that someone will care for and love a little Micra just as much.

Utterly indestructible little cars. Drove one to Mongolia back in 2017. Didn't have one mechanical issue! A few punctures and an issue with the Earth in the rear light clusters was about it. Most of the way was rough roads, dirt roads, washboard, even did the D915 in Turkey in it. It was brutal, but the little Micra soldiered on unphased. Absolutely love these little nuggets!

Have an NB MX5, '12 Camry and a K11 - the Nissan is my favourite car to drive, one reason I think is that without power steer it is so nicely geared, terrible in parking spots however and impatient people waiting for the spot don't get it, probably thinking, "it is a small car, why all the effort?". I am able to get bookcases in the back all sorts, I love it. The only thing is in Australia it is a rare car and I am fearful about big parts availability going forward (cyl heads, gearboxes, racks,) given I am closing in on 200,000 kms.

Brilliant little work horses, I had one from near new and nearly reached 200K on the clock before some little ragamuffin crashed into it and wrote it off. Not just good around town, but comfortable over long distances as well due to the feather light steering and good ergonomics. Cheap as chips to run, if you can live with the"granny" styling it is (or perhaps was) a car that will never let you down or give you a nasty expensive surprise when you take it in for the annual service. Never had problems with rust with my K10 or K11, maybe I just like to keep my cars clean so the salt didn't get a chance to corrode the metal.
@Scrubworks
@Scrubworks 5 лет назад
From my experience having had two of these and helping maintain two more, the best way to avoid corrosion is to stay away from models that have 3 doors and a sunroof. The sunroof has two drain channels which run down behind the doors, and is prone to becoming blocked, and then filling the sills with water, which then rust out from the inside. The models without the sunroof obviously avoid this problem, whilst the 5 door models with sunroofs have the drain channels take a different route, and that doesn't seem to get blocked for whatever reason.

@Scrubworks
@Scrubworks 4 года назад
@@chrismc1977 In the last few years yes, the front subframes on a lot of the earlier models have started to see corrosion. Never seen one suffer with a damp fusebox. The electrics on these are generally very robust.

Scrubworks mine was a 93 K SLX. Subframe corroded. The fusebox wasn’t the main fusebox but the little one adjacent to the inner edge of the battery (as per the OP car). Road spray could get straight in onto it through the grille. Normally manifested with headlight fuses corroded to dust!

I believe the reason for vertical parking rear wipers was to prevent the motor burning out in snowy conditions when the weight of snow would have to be lifted when blade parked horizontally. Early Golfs and Astras were the same.

My first new car. 1995 in Australia where the Hyundai Excel trashed the low end market with their $13999 drive away pricing. Grabbed one (all 1.3lt here) with dealer fitted air for the same price (normally thousands dearer, like all Japanese cars at the time). Really reliable (except that the dealer appears to have dropped the aircon during install and kept chewing belts until finally located and fixed...). I'm 6'3" and was actually pretty comfortable!! Good times, cheap reliable motoring.

My brother daily drives a 2001 K11 1.0 that he bought from an old lady with very few mileage (oh, coincidence?). It's a pretty decent little car with a superb engine, very pleasant and brilliant at mid-rev. Also, the 1.0 was pushed to 60 BHP on 2000 face lift, with individual spark coils. Main criticism : no tachometer comes as standard on entry level, which is quite an offense with that 16 valve engine which absolutely loves revving.

Had a 2001 Nissan Micra 1,0 in silver (KL0 paint code) which was the last facelift version. No distributor anymore as all cylinders had their own ignition coilpack. Bought it in 2008 and drove it until 2011. Mostly it was an ok car but eventually problems started appearing, for example paint started flaking away, rear brake shoes had to be replaced because they fell apart, check engine light came on for system too lean fault code. At that point I changed the car to brand new Suzuki Alto. Without those problems I could've kept it longer as it was pretty handy car, not too big but not too small either as the Suzuki turned out to be. My mother used to have also 1989-1990 Nissan Micra 1,0 (K10) from 1994 to 2005. It was quite reliable car, drove it sometimes myself as well.

@notonwo
@notonwo 4 года назад
@@Belindaxtz660 If you wind back the sunroof, you will find 4 drain holes - one at each corner of the panel directly below the roof. Check each one is clear and use a length of wire (eg coathanger wire) to clear any debris from the tubing below them. The tubing extends down inside the roof pillars right down to sill level. The front pair empty straight into the sills, the rear ones are not usually a problem as they empty onto the road just behind the rear wheel plastic mudguard. To get at the front drain tubes, remove the plastic covers at the lower front corner of the front doors. You may also find another tube on the drivers side which comes from the aerial - you can ignore this or just put a bung in it (I have not found it to leak on my car). The easiest solution for the 2 others is to attach some suitable plastic tubing and extend the drainage tubes so that any water empties outside the inner door seal and then channels out underneath the door. You should only need about 6 inches of additional tubing. Or you could drill a hole through the bottom of the sill and poke the tubing through so that it empties straight out onto the road. Hope this helps !

This is what real motoring is all about. I have two cars - one of these and a modern turbo diesel. The modern is better in every way - quieter, smoother, faster. In every way, that is, except fun - the Micra is an absolute blast to drive, and you feel all the sensations of driving.
