Turns out this is where most of the leak was coming from. Interesting how they removed the distributor when changing over to electronic ignition, but never redesigned the head. This is an easy repair that does not cost much as the part was around $7 from a dealer online. The most time consuming part was getting access to remove it.

Nice video. I've yet to do this, but I have practiced. I like hitting the junk yard and taking it apart first, I usually pick up bolts, nuts, and anything trivial that may break. Many times there's no charge because they charge $3 entry fee. I'll usually be there to to buy parts too. It's a great way to prepare and find solutions to obstacles.

One other thing to consider is that that plug, for whatever reason, can get stuck in either the valve cover or the head. This happens in at least 2 of the videos on changing the gasket (one was from "Ratchets and Wrenches") but they either used a vise to get it out or left it in there and used silicone to stop the leak. Mine is stuck in the head. I even used a hammer to try to dislodge it and it did not even move one millimeter (it was a 2# hammer!). So, i siliconed it. Bad idea. That was 3 or 4 years ago and it is leaking from the same area again only now the half moon piece that holds it in is siliconed down to it. Can I use a propane torch to melt the plastic plug or will that damage the head? I don't use flame on metal very much.

The plug is metal with a coating. You can heat it, but I would recommend you take the valve cover off and removed it from inside to complete the repair properly. The valve cover gasket is very inexpensive and also a place for oil leaks. Good luck.

Did you have to drain the oil prior to doing this? You would think oil would spill everywhere when replacing the plug....

No, there will only be a little oil.

I'm wondering why all of these 5SFE cam seal replacement videos show the tedious labor of removing the coil pack bracket and all the crap it takes to get to it and yet many comments say just take the valve cover off and use the new plug to push out the old plug, which is supposed to be much easier. However, there are no videos to show this other method. Anyone seen or heard this?

The seal has to be installed from the outside. So the items still have to be removed to make the install possible.

You can indeed remove this plug from inside the cylinder head. When you take the valve cover off, the semicircular cap covering the plug is attached with two bolts on either side. Just remove those two bolts, remove the semicircular cap (might require tapping with a mallet or gently prying with something soft) and then you can lift the plug right out. You don't need to do any of the stuff in this video. I believe you torque the cap bolts to 14 ft/lbs, that's what it is on the other side where the camshaft main seal is.

Would it be easier if im already doin my valve cover gasket
@mrfixit4211
@mrfixit4211 8 месяцев назад
Absolutely. You should be able to punch it out from the inside. You will still have to remove the coil pack to install new cam plug.

Good video and yes access is a pain. I did move the throttle body to access The bracket bolt on the right..... got the nut off Stud on the left side . Can't seem to Find the other bolts holding the bracket ?

The bracket is not flat. Feel around as there is a bolt recessed in the center that is difficult to see.

Did it occur to you to do it from the top through the valve cover?
@mrfixit4211
@mrfixit4211 4 года назад
I did, but I had already done the valve cover before realizing that this might be leaking. I didn't want to redo the cover again by maybe tearing the gasket. Also the plug is designed to enter from the block side which will necessitate remove the bracket.

@@mrfixit4211 You are right. I broke my new plug trying to put it from the top. I ended up putting the broken new plug in front and the old plug on the back of that one to prevent oil from puddling in that cavity.

Sorry to hear that, at least they are not expensive, but does delay the repair. Good luck on the repair.

What sealant did you use?

I used some ultra black gasket maker from Permatex, I have had good luck with it. Would use the Toyota stuff if I remembered to purchase it.

@@mrfixit4211 thanks, kinda a late question after the time you posted this. Appreciate you responding that question quick. And you probably just applied the sealant on the sides of the plugg? Sorry if the question is dumb haha
