Driver's side axle half shaft replacement on a 1998 Toyota Corolla.
Today we're up in Clarksburg to replace a front axle on a 1998 Toyota Corolla, The driver's side outer axle boot is torn wide open and collecting lots of dirt and sand. The axle is just starting to do the typical "marbles in a can" clicking at full lock to the left. This is a REALLY EASY replacement. The hardest part (usually) is getting the locking clip, that keeps the axle locked into the transmission, to disengage and come out. On THIS particular job the axle nut became the challenge. UNFORTUNATELY the video footage where I stood on the breaker bar, and pounded on the end of the breaker bar (part inserted in the socket) until the nut freed up. This repair is usually simple and easy enough that anyone who can change a tire, can change the axle as well, with fairly basic tools!

Nearly broke another breaker bar on this one.. (and I think my camera overheated or something, because the whole "reassembly file" was really crazy data rates. I had to "repair" the file by converting it's format. You can see when my arm pixelates.)

tore the inner boot when changing struts being careless, one tip for removing the axel I used a ball joint separator. you can shove it up the from the bottom then I just hit that with a 2lb sledge. I also forgot to put down a catch pan and made a huge mess... I'm here because I can't get the axel back in and of course you made it look easy so back to struggling with it. thanks for the video!

First make sure the end going in is exactly the same as what came out. (dia., #of splines length, etc. Once you're sure they're a match, push the axle back in as far as you can, then pull back about 1 inch (25mm), slam it back in. That'll usually work. Also a good idea to coat it with a little grease first, and rotate it while seating it.

Good luck and use caution when prying the axles out. Someone pulling LIGHTLY will help. If that doesn't work... ADD striking the end of the pry bar while prying almost always wins the battle. Edit: be super careful to not damage the axle seal or the transmission case..

Hi, question; how much gearbox oil comes out when you pull the shaft out? Do you drain the gearbox first or is this not needed? Thanks!
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair 5 месяцев назад
If the gearbox was filled correctly, very little should come out. (Proper level is USUALLY right to the BOTTOM of the seals, not above, or measurably below)

Did it eventually need a inner cv joint replacement ? I replaced my cv joints and now the middle shakes like crazy and it turns out there’s a inner joint. I’m gonna get it replaced soon !
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair Год назад
I NEVER bother with rebuilding the CV Joints. I also don't waste the time and money to reboot any either. They're USUALLY cheaper to just replace the whole half shaft as a complete assembly. I replaced the whole unit.
@HurtsEnd
@HurtsEnd Год назад
@@HouseCallAutoRepair thank you for the advice ! I had both my cv axles assembly replaced but where they connect in the middle makes a thud sound when driving and it got worse over time. I’m not sure what’s wrong but I think it might be my transmission shaking. Again thank you for the advice, I hope to save enough to fix whatever is wrong with this old reliable😳🤦🏽‍♂️
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair Год назад
@@HurtsEnd The symptoms you describe, sound to me like one of the three roller bearing inside the INNER hub of the axle, may have shattered or fallen apart, essentially throwing the whole axle shaft out of whack. With the drive wheels off the ground and the vehicle secured from moving,, with the engine running, put it in gear and watch the axles rotate. look close to the hub for movement that is NOT on a constant axis. (wobbling) Anything more than just a bit of wobble, I'd recommend removal and inspection of the rollers

Just to ask. Do you know where to find a CV axle for the passenger side for this year.(CE model if that means anything) I have replace the driver side one and now looking for the other side and cant seem to find any with the dynamic balancer on it.
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair 2 года назад
Aside from factory original, I don't think any aftermarket half shafts have balancers... Can't say I've ever come across one. Unless you're travelling at really high speed, it shouldn't make any noticeable difference.
@th3d3vil08

What did you torque the CV axle bolts to? I ask because I'm doing my front two this Saturday. However I've gotten everything from. "The nut on the spindle should be tightened until snug, with no side-to-side play in the hub and then backed off slightly, about maybe a 1/8 of a turn." To 159 lb to 180 lb of torque for the bolts. Could someone please clarify.
@HouseCallAutoRepair
@HouseCallAutoRepair Год назад
Unfortunately this information is often difficult to find (without a monthly premium) Torque puts a "preload" on the bearing. Too tight causes crushing and premature failure, and too looses causes play and premature failure. ASK the manufacturer of the part, what their recommendation is. (I do NOT have access to this information without hunting for it,)
