1999-2003 galant Misfire hesitation (SOLVED)

The car was misfiring while accelerating from a stop. Then it started doing it while idling. Then it started doing it while in park or neutral. And it started misfiring when you turned on the A/C. It jsut got so bad I had to do something about it. There was about a half of a teaspoon of oil inside the #4 spark plug tube. I pulled the spark plug out and the electrode and threads were also wet with oil. I had replaced the valve cover gaskett and spark plug tube seals at around 120K miles. And with the car approaching 200K it started misfiring as I described. The spark plug tube seals do not last over time... They eventually leak oil into the spark plug tubes. So what I did was I bought some high quality RTV gasket sealant and ran a bead of it around the tube seal surface that mates with the valve cover and I also ran a bead of RTV on the bottom side of the valve cover as well. I waited about 5-10 minutes for the RTV to become tacky and I placed the tube seals on the tubes and put the valve cover on. The valve cover squished the RTV into the tubes and I used my finger to smooth it out so I could get the spark plugs in and out. Now it is sealed against leaking. I should have done this when I did the Felpro kit!!! Well the problem was immediately solved! :) No More Misfire!!! I will also add that the oil clearly Eroded the spark plug electrodes which were NGK Platinum. The electrodes on this higher end plugs is susceptible to erosion and doesn't last... Then you will get misfire just from the plugs being unevenly gapped. So get NGK plugs with a thick Electrode. NGK R type only. So I hope this helps every one who gets a P0300 or misfire code.

People like you are awesome. You take your time and load up a simple video but amazingly helps a lot of people. Thank you for all the info. I did a couple of videos regarding my galant also because I couldn't find any answers. Keep them up and thanks again.

thanks, I tried to help. The best help is free. But at the same time someone is helping you you also have to take initiative and take the time to learn. I think there's a lot of hipster mechanics in this world nowadays that aren't willing to be kind and take their time. The worst thing you can do is when someone needs help you give them a hard time. Understanding and patience almost always works in the end. I have several other videos that are a lot more helpful than this one and I think the most technically helpful thing I've learned about this car is that when your camshaft sensor fails only one of the coil packs will fire. So it is very simple to check if your cam sensor is bad simply take your coil packs out and put your plug boots in the air turn the car over and see if all are firing or not.

Dude I love my Galant! I got it with over 180000 miles. After researching a bit, I decided to put money into it. New suspension, water pump kit, radiator, spark plugs, fuel pump, and a new look. My issue is nothing with this car. The money in putting into it doesn't bother me. Nice looking car. Mine was stock looking, no pazaz 😴. I made all the chrome flat satin blkb out tints in. Wheeeewweeee. Ima post a video.

Things that cause misfire on this car, IAC, CPS, CSS, plugs, wires/boots, vacuum leak (intake manifolds crack), leaking plug seals, clogged cat, etc... Pretty easy motor to diagnose.

yep spot on thumbs up, went on this journey of diagnosis few years back,changed plugs+cleaned plug tube from oil and was no miss for a while..now it's back mainly in opposite plug hole to your car. so been slowly buying,sparkplugs leads,coils,rtv,oem tube boots,and rocket cover gasket oem from japan. btw mine mainly misses under hard load with accelerator pedal past half way, if i baby it nothing happens.. mine is 01 mitsubishi nimbus UG 7seater in AU, but will work with any model with 4g64,16valve 2.4l eg lancer and even seen a great wall suv with this engine so would be same symptoms as described in video here.

Im going to have to check that out soon. I'm having the same problem with my 99 v6. I replaced the spark plugs and wires myself about 8 months ago, but i didnt notice any oil on any of them that I took out. It ran great after I replaced them, for about a week, then the light came on again, it was for 02 sensors. Replaced those, and now i have a random misfire code. Thanks for this video. I'm definitely going to be looking into it.

8. wait for the RTV on the spark plug tub seals to become tacky, not hard but just starting to set up. 9. then place the valve cover back on and tighten down to 78 inch pounnds or 6-7 foot pounds. OR just snug, not too tight. 10. Use your finger and a rag to remove any RTV that has gotten inside the spark plug tube. Smooth it out inside and wipe it out so it is clean and smooth. 11. re-install coil spark plug boots and coil packs.

I know that's why I was asking I Havnt taking the bottom cover off yet by change could the belt be broke on bottom but still be tight on the top cam gear
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 6 лет назад
Joseph Jackson maybe the teeth stripped off but that doesn't seem right. Maybe the camshaft cracked from oil starvation? The oil pump is geared 3:2:1 and normally people don't know that and never align it properly during a timing belt job. Unless the bottom pulley didn't come off I don't know why the belt would be tight if it doesn't rotate the camshaft.

How difficult is it to reach/remove spark plug tube seals on 1999 2.4L, do you use hands, needle nose or something else...thx
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 10 лет назад
It's extremely mindless and easy. You just unbolt the valve cover and take the seals off the tops of the 4 tubes, they sit right on top. you need a socket, ratchet and new seals and a little RTV to seat them against the valve cover, just use a little or none at all. Make sure to clean the mating surface on the bottom of the valve cover though so it makes a good seal. and don't tighten the valve cover too much, just snug or your seals will leak.
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 11 лет назад
Any RTV designed for engine use should work. Also replace your spark plugs if they are more than 10k miles old. Often the spark plugs become bad if oils has gotten into the cylinder.

Thanks so much! What year outlaner intake did you use? My 02 galant is also cracking
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 4 года назад
Mine cracked from leaning on it when checking out the motor but I think they pretty much all crack overtime. This is a big job, it's going to take an entire day or two and it's really awkward lean over the back of the motor and crawling around underneath. The 2004 outlander non VVT manifold is the one that will bolt on. Depending on the condition of your aging Galant, I might just throw a kneaded rope of JB weld around where the cracks normally appear and massage it in.

You have oil inside the spark plug tubes? Oil leaking from the valve cover all around? 1. buy a new valve cover kit. It includes spark plug tube seals. 2. remove valve cover 3. remove old valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals. 4. install new valve cover gasket 5. Put new tube seals on 6. put a pencil thick ring of RTV sealant on the tube seal where it meets the under side of the valve cover. 7. put a small bead of RTV on the bottom of the valve cover where the tube seals meet.

Hey I have replaced all of those plus new spark plugs. I was wondering what it could have been I will look into this next. I replace my head cover because it was leaking. But what is the name of the stuff that you are using if their oil near the spark plug
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 5 лет назад
If you replace the spark plugs and spark plug boots and the car still misfires it is probably the camshaft position sensor. It is the most common cause of motor stalling.

Engine cranks but top timing gear an belt don't move but belt is tight any suggestions
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 6 лет назад
Your statement is contradictory. If the motor was turning over the belt as well as the running gear would be moving. If your timing belt is not broken it does then sound like your starter motor gear is stripped or the flywheel teeth are stripped. The only way for the crankshaft and pistons to turn over without the camshaft is if the timing belt is broken. That should be easy to tell, remove the timing cover and look at the belt.

I also did oil change high mileage immediately i bought it. When i press on the gas pedal and I exceed 65km/h it tries to resist( like stop and move, stop and moves) especially on free way. Do you have an idea about it? My friend told me that Mitsubishi vehicles do act like that because they might put a limit on some but help me because I really doubt what my friend told me. Thanks

the fuel regulator is easy to check. pull the hose off of it and see if fuel squirts out. if you will does not come out of it then it is most likely good. they do get old and slightly worn out. how old are your spark plugs and what kind? there's a number of things that could cause that problem like for instance a weak fuel pump.

At 350,000 MI on a timing belt with 150k on it the gallant died on its palliative journey. At 3:00 a.m. on the Sunday night and an hour from home the belt broke. @@kingrivas4717 it's pretty self-explanatory once you start doing it but it is pretty difficult to reach some of the bottom nuts on the intake manifold, it's going to take a day of wiggling and contorting your hands to get it done. ArcolaBridge how did you go about replacing it the steps taken do u have a video or recommendations so far I have the throtle body off
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 6 лет назад
Adam Gallegos the most difficult part is one of the fasteners kind of in the middle bottom towards the passenger side. Good luck with that. You're going to need some kind of special tool to get good torque on it. The second most complicated part will be hooking up the vacuum components. You don't need to add anything and in fact you're going to subtract one of the long metal lines because what you have already is long enough to work on the Outlander Style. Just try to keep that attached to the existing manifold when you take it off so it's easier to figure out where it goes on the new one. I didn't have any kind of tutorial or any kind of explanation when I did it. There isn't a good Gallant database like there is with German cars. Not that I was able to find. You just have to start taking stuff apart. And I actually got the throttle linkage screwed into the Outlander manifold without having to modify anything if you look in the picture. It's still working to this day.

I think galants have a issue of oil getting into the spark plugs no matter what. I've change the gasket cover and the tube seals twice on my galant and when time comes to change the spark plugs there's always oil on the plugs all the time. Idk it's a thing that galants tend to do after a while of driving them...
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 7 лет назад
1skylinedreamz your cylinder head cover is probably bent or warped. that usually happens after a while especially with heat cycling or if you put too much weight on them or tighten them down too much. anyway that's why you're supposed to use RTV sealant in between the tube seals and the cover.

I recently installed a fuel pump on a Mitsubishi Galant 2004 and a crank the first time and then it stopped turning over I guess the suggested that it might be the fuel pump but I feel the fuel pump still delivering fuel but I feel like the motor is not receiving any fuel what should I do
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 5 лет назад
I don't really understand what you are saying. If the car is not turning over that is not related to the fuel pump. If it is not turning over it sounds like the starter is not working. Is the battery okay?

@@ArcolaBridge the car will crank but not turn over, the first day it shut off while driving and someone told me the fuel pump and I changed it. It did start and run after that for 45 minutes and now it will not start at all just crank
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 5 лет назад
@@louisramos5201 what you are describing is a classic camshaft position sensor problem. It's a cheap replacement but make sure if you purchase the part on the internet it is a genuine Park. I would advise not purchasing it online. I purchased a counterfeit sensor that looked real but caused further confusion. I alternate Lee found a genuine replacement from Chrysler Dodge Jeep parts on eBay. But it was like the same price as the dealer, I paid $45 for mine. Take your spark plugs out of your car and point your spark plug boots in the air with a spark plugs in them and turn the key to start the car. If only one coil pack for example two spark plugs are sparking and one coil pack is not sparking the other two spark plugs that is a sure sign that it is your camshaft position sensor. It's a five minute fix. It is also possible it could be the crankshaft sensor and that is a more difficult replacement.

I have a 2003 galant. That has the same problem. Turns out I have oil in my spark plugs. It won't stay idle. It just dies when u take your foot off the gas. What should I tell the auto shop? So they don't have to charge me for diagnosis? ?
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 9 лет назад
If you ask me that behavior sounds like vacuum leak or IAC most likely. You should be able to inspect the spark plugs and wires yourself to eliminate that possibility. The most likely culprit is the IAC or Vacuum leak (could be a cracked hose or crack in the intake manifold sucking in air, the Cam sensor could cause this as well. 1. check plugs, boots and wires, if plugs have oil change them and put new valve cover and tube seal gasket on. 2. if plugs do not have oil check IAC with a multimeter. Put small wire between wire and connector boot. 3. Check for vacuum leak, broken hose or (crack in intake manifold is common) or MAF 4. maybe alternator is failing, check voltage output 5. cam sensor. you can check it with mutlimeter

Plugs, boots, wires, (coil pack is easy to check, if you unplug the wires and it shoots spark its working) Check for crack in manifold (common with this car) check for vacuum leak, IAC and Cam sensor should be checked. There is a great website if you search it that has diagnostic info.

I just replaced my serpentine belts and now my my car won't start (2000 galant) and the code reads random multiple misfires. any insight?
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 7 лет назад
Die andern frau is the belt properly tightened? the serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning and water pump. there is no reason that stands out that would cause a misfire from a new belt. Unless you replace the timing belt and did not line up the timing marks? did you interfere or break any of the wiring going to the crankshaft position sensor?
@Dieandernfrau
@Dieandernfrau 7 лет назад
ArcolaBridge as far as I can tell, no wires or hoses are damaged. the longer belt was very hard to get on, so I'm thinking my fiance might have put it on backwards (is that possible?). other than that, we did drive it about 500 feet without the alternator belt on just to get it off the freeway, so I'm not sure but I'm thinking that may have skewed the timing.
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 7 лет назад
Die andern frau the timing belt and the serpentine belt are two entirely different belts. if you did not adjust the timing belt then your timing will still be exactly the same. so you were driving and suddenly the motor cut out? it's possible your alternator is dying. but that wouldn't necessarily explain the misfire. what size motor do you have?
@Dieandernfrau
@Dieandernfrau 7 лет назад
ArcolaBridge not exactly. started it up after putting the belts in, and it was running terrible. pulled out of the parking spot and back in, turned it off. turned it back on, ran it for about 2 minutes then it died and hasn't started since.

It's a bad idea to add any extra sealant material. it will definitely make it a lot harder to replace the gaskets when you will have to inevitably replace them again.
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 7 лет назад
Scandalous Fatality it's a well-known preventative measure on this car. The Fel-Pro gasket is where it's at. I've currently got a hundred and twenty thousand miles since this procedure with no sign of any leaking. It's a great idea. Before I could go about 40,000 miles before oil would start sleeping in. At least on this motor in the cult of the 2001 for Banger Galant.
@ScandalousFatality
@ScandalousFatality 7 лет назад
ArcolaBridge if you were still getting oil in the spark plug well after you replaced the gaskets them that would mean that your valve cover was bent around that well.
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 7 лет назад
Scandalous Fatality not technically. it's just a thing on this motor, rtv is still strong.
@ScandalousFatality
@ScandalousFatality 7 лет назад
If it works I'm not meaning to tell you not to use it i was just trying to tell you that in the long run its not the best idea. I've had the same problem in my eclipse which has the same engine and the valve cover was slightly bent up around well 3 due to excess heat
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 7 лет назад
Scandalous Fatality in this case the real cause was the camshaft position sensor. upgrading the spark plugs to iridium solve the problem for a little bit but the camshaft sensor as it turns out must have been failing slowly. So over time no amount of fixing the ignition system would have done any good. It was interesting to note the Improvement in the issue on this naturally aspirated motor with the iridium plugs. I chose two steps colder plugs and the motor appears to get even better mileage than before! Interesting...

the ignition system on this car is very simple. There is not much to it that is. typically the cam position sensor will trigger the check engine light if it goes bad. But not always, after it really truly feels it should but initially it may not. that was the problem I had all along. the funny part is I replaced it with what I thought was an oem sensor but it turned out to be a fake counterfeit. I have another instructional video on my page that describes that. things that can cause a misfire on this car most commonly are the TPS, IAC, ignition components, and of course a vacuum leak.
