Wal-Mart did it again. Overfilling the oil is hell on the seals. Here, I replace the valve cover gasket. Since I'm in here, I decided to replace the spark plugs and PCV valve.
Another note: after torquing down the cover, I pinched the temp gauge wire on the opposite end of the camera. After the engine heated up, it melted the insulation and shorted the sensor. The temp gauge instantly rose to HOT. This was not a gradual rise - it was instantaneous after turning the ignition key. I thought it might be the thermostat because the lower hose was cold; however, it was about 15 degrees outside at the time. The coolant probably didn't cycle. Always be sure to DOUBLE CHECK for pinched wires that might stray from the wire harness.

There are v-notches on the side of the dipstick for the high-low level. Other than that, the stick is a polished piece of metal. To better locate the oil level against the dipstick, I later scratched up the area between the notches with a steel brush.

Nice job! I referenced this video and replaced plugs, wires and gaskets. Took about an hour and a half. Cost $98.

@TELLO3675 There are two ignition coil *modules* on my Galant; however, each plug has its own dedicated coil with modern electronic ignition. Faraday's Law was applied in the old distributor cap days using "points". Only one ignition coil was used back then - this is why we used to have to clean/replace the points, cap, and plug wires so much.

Yeah, I cut that part out of the video so thanks for asking. I applied oil to the gasket for a reason. Torque one end and then the other - not one end all at once; tighten them equally until you see the oil press out a little on the sides.

Same thing happened to me. Check for cracks around your intake manifold - around where the throttle body bolts to the flange. I would be willing to bet that it is cracked. I have another video on how I repaired mine with high temp silicone tape. Move the duct work and use a mirror to check between the firewall and the throttle body. This is a common problem with this engine.

@griffnut666 that code can also mean the ignition leads are faulty or the spark plugs are bad. I'd replace all of your spark plugs and clear the code first. You don't have to take off the valve cover. Inspect the boots when you replace them. If you see one that looks crappy, it's probably #2.

I'd remove the exhaust manifold heat shield; while the car is tapping, hold one end of a long screwdriver to your ear and touch the manifold. Listen if the tapping is coming from it. That thing rattles a lot. Next time I replace the O2 sensor, I'm taking off that shield. The other tapping I've heard recently sounds like valve lash when I'm torquing uphill at +3k RPM...

If your coils are bad your OBD-II should be throwing a code (check engine light on?) I had motor issues without throwing a code. Issues seemed to be at high speeds downhill and at idle. It wound up being a cracked intake manifold. From the forums it looks like the cast iron intake on this model are prone to cracking. I was lucky; I was able to wrap the manifold with high-temp silicone tape to maintain vacuum. Closely inspect around where the intake flange bolts to the throttle body.

I own a 01 Galant and the same goes for mine. Could it be the self adjusting valves, adjusting?...that's what I think....I'm no mechanic though.

I replace mine when it starts to leak. The plug tubes should not get oil in them. If so, the plug tube seals should be replaced. The tube seals are part of the gasket kit.

according to the book: 2.5 ft lbs. more important is the order the bolts are torqued. as commented below, I oiled the gasket then torqued until I saw a little oil press out.

A Wal-Mart oil change is $29.79. For me to do it myself, material alone would cost about $19.22 and take about 20 minutes. You're right: a trained monkey can change oil. I guess I'm losing a couple bucks per oil change but I'm also gaining 20 minutes; I get paid an average of $xx per hour so it's a good value for me and my daughter. Wal-Mart's monkeys got it wrong twice in 210k miles; but I consider this my fault for not double-checking the oil level before leaving the shop :-)

No. You can take the cover off without draining the oil.

I have a 2003 Galant 4 cyl. Are 2 of your spark plugs different? The spark plugs with the longer wire snapped in (kinka like) but the other short wire ones in my mitsubishi just had a spring ? -jAnyway my car runs worse now that I fixed it ? I dont know what I did wrong. I just changed the spark plugs. ??? Stupid Car. lol

if your check engine light is on, you could get the codes to be sure. if it's running rough after changing the plugs, I'd suspect the coil pack stem isn't being inserted properly into the top of the plug. it shouldn't "spring". you should feel it snap.

It depends on the plug gasket, thread size, and block. The rule I was taught: 1/4 turn after finger tightening on an aluminum block (10~18 ft.lb.) Your plugs may reference a torque guideline...

I don't own a V6. Sorry. According to Haynes, you have to remove the manifold. That sucks. But doing it yourself will save about $600...
