LOL having a good time hearing you talk about a bus that was almost new when I graduated 😂 the DT466E is a tough old girl. Not quiet, but tough! Rohrer had the mechanical non-turbo version of this engine back in the day, in the Wayne bodied Internationals S1800’s. The Thomas bodies were pretty new, and a few FS65 Thomases had begun to show up by then as well, I rode one in my senior year (9906). There were a few oddballs in the fleet, like a pair of Thomas Internationals with T444E (same as 7.3L Powerstroke) and the really old buses before ‘87 MY were still Wayne International S1800’s but they had the 9.0L in them, talk about a torquey and angry sounding diesel V8, I don’t think they were as fun to keep running but they were my favorite hands down! I feel like Rohrer had them straight piped, which made them really angry and cool. Trust me, that DT466E will still be running in 20 years if the bus body can keep up. lol
I used to ride what was baiscally a circa 1992 full size version of this bus. It even had a wheelchar lift. It had that front door paired with a manual control. When the bus was stopped on even the slightest downhill grade, the driver had a time trying to close that door. I think that hinge at the 3/4 ish point of the door made it harder to close.
I remember these growing up except they were the full length ones and the ones in my district with the jack knife doors didn’t have air doors they were manual but the blue birds they had with jack knife doors had air doors. Air door is more useful on those Thomas doors they are very heavy to open and close with the handle compared to the bluebirds and they would get jammed since one side was way bigger than the other . Another district in my area had fs65s with air jack knife doors which are rare usually only see them on the internationals
We have 26 buses in our fleet , one of the sticks is a 99 bluebird 466 with the 7 speed manual , we also have a 90 Wayne with a 5 speed , a 95 Thomas 6 speed, and a 88 smodel Wayne ik you would like that one
