Did some racing in Mexico with a friend. 1999 Trans Am - stock ported heads, ls6 intake, ms3 cam, 4000 stall, 3.42 gears vs 1979 Firebird - small block chevy, heads, cam, intake, 3600 stall, 2.73 gear
The '79 was all noise and no speed. The 4th generation trans am was ahead of it's time. Smooth sharp looking. Probably the next trans am on my list to get next to my '87 GTA.
I had pretty much the same setup... a 79 Firebird with a 2.73 rear end. Put a Chevy 350 in it, but the gears still sucked. I bought a rear axle from a 77 or 78 Trans Am with posi, hoping for a better ratio. I got home, removed the differential cover, counted the gears, and it was STILL 2.73!! From a Trans Am! I have no idea why Pontiac did that.
Nice race and looks fun. LS1 s are no joke. For the 79 to do that good speaks volumes. I had a good friend with a 86 GN with some decent mods. I had a 93 LT1 Firehawk M6. With headers and tune. You alls race reminds me of us racing. My Firehawk beat the GN all the time but it was close at first. Just like your races. Great video 😎
Only a person without any regard for the future value of the car would transplant in an LS Chinese motor. Call Butler Pontiac for the 79. Not cheap but down the road a Pontiac person will want the car. LS engines are a death sentence down the road a few years.
Those 4th gen trans ams are no joke! I actually looking for a 4th generation Pontiac trans am in the future and I hate too see the owner of trans am got in trouble with the police. I also have a 1989 Pontiac trans am GTA and a 89 Irocz Camaro.
Older cars usually have a faster launch and 0-60 because their engines produce way more torque than horsepower. Mainly because of having bigger engines and liters.(77 pontiac trans am has a pontiac 400 6.6l engine that produces about 335hp and 480lbs of torque. Whereas a 2002 trans am has a smaller chevy 350 5.7l ls1, but produces more horsepower than torque.)
the firebird had a 355 dummy.. can you read? Also your numbers about the Pontiac 400 are way off. They were so underpowered because of all the emissions.
+ReFuzy doesnt matter. 72cc heads off a '70 year 10:1 400 swapped onto a 77 block will net even high compression pushing 500 + lb ft torque that would eat the ls pepsi can for breakfast
Nice video and nice cars! This is similar to a race between an lt1 and ls1. Lt1 can hang for awhile and then the ls1 pulls away. I've had both so I've been at either end lol
Q: Who won???? A: who cares!!!! A fun time was had by all!!! I hope the T/A Driver didn't get a ticket. Both cars were awesome!!!!! I would love to have both of them!!! These cars were made to be enjoyed, and they did just that!!!!
The white car is actually a th-350. He accidently had it in 1st gear on the last roll race. That's why it was all over the rev limiter, plus he beats his cars like they owe him money!
@@d17walker you can get a 350 or maybe even a 428 from a Bonneville sedan for 500 bucks and go up from there! Might even be able to trade up from your 355 to a true Pontiac mill
What is a St Charles police cruiser doing in Mexico? I believe this is in the Missouri area. Perhaps near the border with Illinois. I do not feel like spending more than 5 minute on this. Would be pretty easy to figure out where you were racing using background transformer noise embedded in the video audio. Then use facial recognition and reduce down possible matches to cars and houses match to that. Blah blah, you guys need to be more careful. If someone wanted to spend the time they could identify both of you without too much effort.
longer gears actually are to the advantage of the 79 ... no overdrive and the fact the ole sbc mill does better breathing in the low to mid range rpms... 3.23s or 3.08s would have won him this race prolly anything shorter would have him out his powerband or just out of gear with no more speed to be had
No... LS engines can run their nuts off and have gone 9's on a stock cube, stock bottom end. By the way his car has been re-tuned and is much faster now proof for the stock 9's look up "texas speed & performance LS1 heads/cam stock bottom-end national 1/4 mile record"
put a 455 in the 79 and the 99 will be kissin classic bird ass all day. better yet get another 4th gen bird and put the l75 in it and the ls bird wont see the tail lights after bout 5 seconds. And NO WAY was this vid filmed in MEXICO, hehaha silly shit.
+Evan B 22 lb tune but I also have a strong SG1 block with a bottom end girdle, TRW, pistons, 6262 turbo, GN1 intercooler, ported heads and intake, 70mm throttle body, 210/215 cam, RJC down pipe. A few other goodies
Lifewontwait29 Sounds like a badass build man, not taking anything away from it but it's not really fair to compare that to a stock or mild 350 or LS1 haha. That's a pretty in depth build even going as far as to replace the block and all, id expect it to make a lot of power. Either way, I bet it's sick and I do give you props for taking the road less traveled. Most people looking for big power would've just swapped the motor but I respect people who stick with what the car was meant for. Got any videos of it? I'd love to see that monster in action :-)
