A full-overlap frontal crash test of a 1999 MCI D-series bus, this test analyzes the potential of injuries using two different types of seats as well as the mounting location of the seats. The two types of seats that are tested are standard Euro-style seats and SafeGuard Premier seats. The bus weighs 44,250 lbs (20072 kg), traveling into a solid wall at 34.7 Mph (55.84 Km/h).
Kinetic Energy: 1.8 million ft/lbs.
Dummy reading limits based upon 5th percentile female occupants. 50th and 95th percentile occupants have slightly higher thresholds for Chest Deflection (63 mm) and Femur Loads (10005 N).

This is one of the reasons why truck drivers in the US weren't super fond of cabovers - you get a great firsthand look and feel at whatever you crash into....ya know, before you get crushed. I definitely wouldn't want to be in a wreck in a bus, that's for certain.

It's not up to you all the time. Some other vehicle causes you to lose control. Maybe a tire failure at the same time that the road is very curved and you slide off. Black ice. Heart attack. Defective gas pedal. Passengers distract the driver. Or they start a fight on the bus.

I really feel so sorry for Emergency personnel who have to retrieve the injured and deceased from this type of accident . Can you imagine the driver and first 4 rows of occupants .

I have been at the scene of an accident where a double deck bus hit a bridge at around 100 km/h. It wasn't full frontal, but impact was enough to cause absolute chaos. As i was passing by driving my own bus, i happened to be the first at the scene and i immediately started calling emergency services and tried to remember my first aid lessons the best i could. I was so focused i never even heard all the equipment arriving at the scene and after three hours , in which my bus was used to shelter the passengers from the crashed bus, i continued for the rest of the 450km i still had to drive that day. I saw stuff that still haunts me. Wear those seatbelts people. Please.

I do agree, 1 issue. busses in the netherlands dont come with them. Luckily I dont use public transport anymore so I can now safely travel in my car which does have one ofc.

@@Kinsanth_ 35mph with no seat belt is incredibly fast, especially once you hit the windows, go through them land on who knows what, or just bash your head on all those iron bars everywhere on the bus. Even 50kmh with no seat belt is very fast as the crumple zone is your bones, or your skull stuff like that. Now accidents only happen occasionally, but is that a reason to ignore safety all to get her, because accidents rarely happen? (not saying you are saying that last part, but a lot of people do say/ think like that). And the worst part is that travelling by bus isn't even cheap, at times way more expensive that with car and they take about 5 times-6 times longer too. What is a 5 minute ride in a car is a 30 minute drive with the bus costing you like 10 bucks by now probably. When I still used it it was around 5-6 bucks, and that was about 6 years ago when everything was massively cheaper.

I have driven this year of bus and even if you are hitting a pickup truck or moose can trap you behind the wheel. Newer buses are better than older busses in this respect, but there is only so much you can do when slowing 18 tonnes to 0. Greyhound Canada had a plaque on one of there buses in memorial to a driver that was pinned in a burning bus from a suicidal driver in an oncoming pickup truck. Managed to direct passengers to safety despite this.

Thats hitting a solid object, cars and most buildings even would absorb a lot of the impact making it a less severe crash unless they hit a heavy concrete wall.

Wow! I would of never expected to see such a catastrophic impact from an impact at 35 mph, I mean damage forsure but if this were full of actual people and it ran into like a highway overpass wall at just 40-45 mph easily could of killed 6-8 people possibly more and dozens of serious injuries. I don’t think anyone whether belted or seated in the back would have been able to escape being injured in some way

The bus weighs 20 tonnes, was going at 35mph, and crashed into a completely solid wall. That's more less the equivalent of the bus hitting front-to-front another bus going at the same speed with the same weight. In real life, such a scenario would not be common, but naturally with plenty of trucks and buses out there it could occur.

See the Greyhound bus crash details, Fresno California from July 2010. Six people died, including the driver. That bus had similar impact damage from a highway speed collision with an overturned SUV.

I own buses like these new and old. The new ones are basically just the old buses but with different panels, and more cheap garbage in them. There are some other small changes as well, but the old ones are way better. The new bus computers break, and all my new buses don’t work properly, but the old ones do.

Unless you run into a bridge support or some other solid structure, this type of damage is unlikely, usually the bus is the more solid that whatever it runs into.

The NOLA Mother's Day crash in 1999 killed 23 when the bus went off the road and hit an embankment. An MCI rep said this was worst frontal impact they had ever seen and bus was probably going close to 70 mph at impact.

Avilenino24 is missing something really important here. 1) the D model is based on structure designs dating back to the 60's. It was outdated when the C (its near predecessor) arrived in the late 80's. 2) This test is also on a 20 or more year old bus with a lot of fatigue and corrosion. Steel in the front spare tire and suspension area as well as the sash pillars is a real problem on these old girls. You can hide it with paint but not when you do this. When they were new they stood up pretty well as I had one come in from a light head on with a car to be checked and repaired (light meaning each going 30 or so mph ) (the door and other parts of the car were in the baggage bin - it didn't fare well) but we measured it out and it had sprung back, checked welds etc. even the energy absorbing bumper was Okay - the only damage was a cracked windshield from the flex and we readjusted the latch for the front bumper (the bumper folds down to access the spare tire). It wouldn't do that 20 years later. Age and structural maintenance is a huge issue and one that makes crashes way worse than they could have been, but it it overlooked and very expensive when it is done. The other thing to note is the C's, D's and DL's etc. have been pretty much superseded. The E, F, G and J models that are of entirely new design (1998 I think) and construction of these is completely of stainless steel. They don't degrade over time, they also show almost zero fatigue even when 15 years old. A quantum leap over the C's and "Ds. From my experience of crash resistance the E-J's are the best busses built today and they stand up the same if they are one or 20 years old. You mention Prevost and Setra and these busses are not great either, you never want to roll a Prevost H model - terrible. These manufacturers still use a lot of steel (cost cutting) which In my opinion is not a good choice for a vehicle on the road for 20 or 25 years and so many miles. I guess what I need to say is when you get on a 10 or the 20 plus year old bus in the test it doesn't matter what safety standard it passed back years ago. it's what is under your seat now that is more important. Me - I spent 12 years running a body shop specializing in highway coaches and over 20 in that profession.

In July of 2010 a Greyhound bus collided with an overturned SUV in Fresno, California, that killed 6 people, including the 3 in the SUV. It was caused by the driver of the SUV. an intoxicated minor, striking the center divider and rolling her vehicle. Two minutes later the MCI bus struck the SUV, careened off the side of an exit ramp and flipped in its side, killing 3 occupants of the bus, including the driver. Seeing pictures of the bus from the news reports it had similar damage to this one, maybe a little less impact but the collision was at highway speed and not against an immovable object.

Bearing in mind that this may have been a youth but still a you struggling with alcoholism, I think in our society we have done everyone engraved to service by not man dating by law that every person having any problems with ongoing alcohol abuse, gets reported and is mandated to go into a program.

They could make a telescopic frontal crash-zone. On board on a ferry, or driving very low-speed in narrow city streets, it could be withdrawn, saving space. Higher speed driving on country roads, it could be extended fully, giving a calculated controlled deceleration in case of an accident.

Maybe more like the crash zone that functions like an airbag, although a decision needs to be made when to deploy it. That could also mean it needs a breakaway lighting system marking the airbag zone. We don't want to increase crashes by being a bigger target. It can risk pedestrians.

Highway maintenance crews have a large truck that follows behind them that has a huge deceleration “bumper” to absorb impact and protect the workers in front of the truck.

I hit a telephone pole at 35-40 mph, small overlapp pretty much right on the passenger headlight. Broke the telephone pole but I only had minor bruises from the seat belt. Its astonishing the level of destruction in this accident from a similar speed

O ônibus do crashtest tem quase 25 anos, fico curioso para saber a evolução estrutural dos ônibus atuais em situação semelhante. And just like that, in an instant the driver and the first 4 rows of passengers are an IHOP bacon egg and cheese special. As a bus driver I always stay way far behind whatever is in front of me but I am terrified of the day that another motorist collides with my front wheel in a way that knocks my steering out and I careen out of control into the side of a building or bridge pillar. Dog nose trucks are sooo much less sketchy when I think about the worst case scenario.

yeah this is a good arguement to make those type of busses, and seatbelts would also be great. the ones in the netherlands dont have them, probably even less safe than this bus in any regard. you're lucky if you can even hold onto anything when traveling by bus, most of the time youll just stand in the middle with a everyone else not even being able to hold onto anything. Really surprised its even allowed tbh, same with trains pretty strange how they dont have seatbelts either considering the speeds they travel at and how much that simple thing would reduce injury in case of a crash.

I use to drive the counter flow in the Battery and Lincoln Tunnels for NYCTA for years, glad no head- on's in the tunnels.

Yes the wall is exerting equal opposite force but only one of the items were moving. That would be more energy out than in. How would you describe it if two rigid busses each travelling 35mph toward each other crashed? Still 70mph equivalent? If so then something doesnt add up. Cant hit something stationary and double the speed, but also hit something going equal and opposite and still only add their speeds, right? Cant be a wall at 35 = 70, while at the same time a two busses at 35 still = 70.

Have to think tho this is a crash into a solid unmovable object, which don’t get me wrong could happen but it’s very unlikely. a normal crash for a bus would be between it and another vehicle most likely a small car, so in that case these buses are a lot safer than you think.

How many bus drivers had died in the past and present years because of the front end of this buses. Rather it's MCI or New flyer or Prevost. The front end should be better designed with reinforced like the flat face school buses.

When buses crash, it's higher up than many other vehicles. It's better not to crash in the first place. Some suggestions include installing collision avoidance systems, and blind-spot cameras, upgrading turn signals to function as daytime running lights, and putting front side-marker lights as close to the front as possible. When vehicles are more visible, it improves reaction times. The sooner one brakes, the slower the collision speed should it happen, which makes a difference. The savings from avoiding fender benders would likely make it worth the cost of certain upgrades. Avoiding out-of-pocket hospital bills would mean saving tens of thousands of dollars.

Precisely why I hated driving motorcoaches. Went back to freight. I got six feet of axle, engine, and transmission to take the blow, not just my coffee cup, Garmin satnav, and six inches of fibreglass.

Put your seatbelt on ! Slim survivability for the passengers that are slung down the passage way in the middle... Another reason for this is if a buss flipps over in accident, then pepople in the upp part fall down on the lower side , Possible hitting the "lower row" passenger in the process. the seat belt may also save you from exiting the buss thru the lower windows and then get flattened between the side of the buss and the ground .

no, they cant. that isnt how tempered glass cubes work. If that bus had glass like the windows on your house, yes, everyone would be killed or bleed. however, that glass needs a lot of force to even cut someone.

F, I hope they atleast use seatbelts there. in the netherlands the public transport busses dont use them, atleast none I have been on. and I had the missfortune to use them for a pretty long time.

@@Lynnfield3440 seatbelts ar obligatory in tourist cars, not in public transport because there is to much in and out. The most of the people travel short distances, and that is why is not usefull. And also, in tourist cars, you need to sit down, in public transport you can stand up, and so is a seatbelt not used.

Buses don't have very long crumple zones because they have the engine in the back. They should make the fronts of buses far bigger to preven susch an outcome.

This is only around 60 km/h. Most of buses max speed on highway is 100 km/h. I can't imagine the consequences in case of crash without breaking.

The extreme wreckage for such a relatively low speed (56 kph) is because all the energy is dissipated by the bus. Full on crash with a car? The car will take the most of the damage. With another bus? Both will share the damage roughly equally.
