what about doing a comparison video between old school and new school amps? things like part quality, heat sink, sound quality, wattage, stable ohm loads, reliability, cost, how and why they changed over the years. just in your general opinion to show us what makes these amps so great
@@wal i second this comment i love the old rockford amps even tho now they cost more than the new ones with more power they just don't look as cool as the old Darth Vader amps
I really like your videos of all your oldschool - RF- Amps! Thanks for that. Today i also have a small collection of: 200DSM, 200 ix, 2 x power 250M, 60ix , 60X2, 40ix , 500a2 and some Punch status displays. Im proud of owning two of the 250M from around 1996, one was blown and smoking , but it took me less than 10$ of spareparts to fix it. Now they work like new. when you link these beasts, you have 1945 watts on 2 ohms!! In 1995 the punch 40ix was my first " real " amp ( 699 german marks ) and i had it running on 2 ohms mono ( two eminence ECV10 in pushpull ) for several years - no problems at all. I found an older article of an audio magazine from italy where they did some tests with the power 50M and power 250M. They had the power 50M running at 0.125 ohm, that were 32 10" woofers. I am still surprised how clean and powerful the punch 60 sounds today. I use them for bluetooth-toolbox-boombox-projects :-) They easily outperform the expensive-boombox-stuff available today, but you need a big battery! Do you know if the 200 DSM has a little more power than the 200 ix? The specs say 400 watts mono 4 ohms with 11.9 battery volts . the newer 200 ix is also 400 Watts 4 ohms mono, but specified at 12.6 battery volts. should not be a big difference.. Greetings from germany :-)
Man I start out with a RF 40ix didn't know what I had until I started to see the black and grey ones. Came up on another older rf amp for tweeters and then 2 years later I found the greyand bronze 50.2 and a power 250.1 I loved those amps so cool looking and rhey took everything I throw at them. When I had off time during college I would just go in the stereos shops in the bay area and just look at all the stuff they had back then all made Un usa power. Miss those days saved up money for gas and beats. I had to do all the installs myself so I they were crude but did the job. Old school RF forever trying to find a 800.4 to put in my convertible to run components loud. 😅
Great video dude! I have been waiting for a real dyno test of one of these. I Still have my old school RF Power 800a2 and Power 800a4 running in my Scion Xb (third car they have been in) with my Pioneer P80prs (thanks for that great video too) as the source. They have been rock solid amps and I always knew they had balls bigger than the birth sheet said.
I just now got one also I've wanted one for decades and the newer class d amps are smaller more efficient and can make more power but they dont look this cool doing it
thank you for responding. i have an 800a2 that amazingly enough i bought at an estate sale for 10 bucks. i took it home wired it up and it works. talk about score!!! i currently use the amp in my truck. it works just fine. on these amp dynos you guys are dropping the ohm loads down to number i never even heard of(hahahaa) i am in the process of redesigning my system and i would truly like to see some safe numbers i could play with. by the way i believe it was you who had the showroom of old amps brought back some good memories hell it even put a lump in my throat. thanks again
Love your stuff, D. "Oooold schoooool". I have a soft side for RF. That's the brand that started it for me back in '98. I remember a 120a2 would rattle my buddy's Tiburon apart when testing my two 12" Kicker FreeAir subs. That was some tight bass for such a small amp. He also had a JVC El Kameleon head unit. It was cool, hah! Ahh, good times! Now I got two chrome Punch 500.2 from '98. One has the original receipt for $1399.95. That's CRAZY! I did miss the REAL old-school, because I was too young to care prior to '97. Which is why I now catch up with your channel. :)
I remember back in the days only amps we could get our hands on in a little town in florida..Was them sherwood amps we thought we really had something till we were introduced to Rockford Fosgate and it changed our whole world...Back in the 88,89 dayz..lol
Wow, haven't seen those in forever! Back in high school around 99' I had a RF punch 400a4 and two 360a2. The birth sheets on the 360a2's were both around 560 watts. My '95 Ford Taurus might not have been the coolest car high school but damn did it sound good! Lol!
Been getting my collection up of Old School Rockford Power. Currently have: A2 Series- Punch 800a2 w/ end caps Original Warranty Stickers still in tact( Selling on Ebay atm) Power 800a4 w/ end caps Original Warranty Stickers still in tact(Year 2000 only A4 with 4 Gauge ) Power 1100a2 Was only opened to check serial number ; emblem was off and couldn't verify the model number(Type 6 Heatsink used in several models). This was actually tested by a Rockford engineer. .2 Series: Power 800.2 BD Series: Power 1001BD Am in the process of sending all except the 1100a2 to be tested by rockford. I would love to have them on the show once I know they are stable and wont fault in the RU-vid spotlight lol. Subwoofers: 1999 Power DVC 12" Model Number RFR-2212(1000 watts RMS; 2000 Peak), In a single sealed 12" enclosure. This would be a fun one as well, the voice coil is ridiculous. This sub is in very good condition. Big thanks to D wiz for all the effort and dedication to the old school. Gotta love how the amp dyno really clears the air full of myths and false legends. Old school stereo shows you who the real McCoys are.
Had a power 800a4 running two hx2 10s at 2 ohm stereo and fnQ 6&tweets, fnQ 5&tweets, and 2 pairs of fanaticQ 4's all w 24db passives high and low on the mids..running on the other two channels in my 95 silverado for damn near 10 years... never a problem... killer amps
I have a USA made 12' L7 rated @ 750RMS, Which punch would you run this single woofer? I have a P3002 order but thinking to get a Punch 500 which is rated at 4 ohms 500watts RMS
Great vid man! What do you feel a 600a5 in perfect working condition and nearly mint condition is worth these days? Complete with both end caps of course and the info sticker on the bottom of the amp is still like new. Also on a side note, the measurements in that brochure don't include the end caps. My 600.a5 is 18 1/8" at the widest point(bottom).
Hey, I just acquired a 91 Grand Marquise in New Condition 56K miles, I wanna upgrade the Factory Speakers, with some JL 6x9 and 5.25, What Amp would you recommend? I was looking at a Punch 600a4
Love this channel just seeing all the old school power house amps from the early 90s. Im 45 now and still love car audio. My prize car was 87 Mustang Gt that had 22 speakers in it. My amps of choice then were Precision Power Art series and HiFonics colossus. Man that car could know off trash cans.. I do mexhanic work on and sometimes people have no idea what these monster things are and be like can u take it out and fix the radio..so i have a nice collection of some oldies RF, Kicker, Blade, Us Amps...my current ride is a new charger rt it has nice alpine factory system but when i blow it up i will be sneaking my army of monsters in the trunk. Thanks for your work playa
I still have this amp. used to have 2 12" JL Audio 12WO-8 that I was popping over & over. didn't even have the amp at full power. finally got 2 Lanzars HRWDC12 & then my problem was over. Friend of mine explained my problems, car shop had no knowledge
I had this amp in my first car, running a 15" Cerwin Vega DVC subwoofer and then when that died it ran 2 x 12" Rockford Fosgate DVC subwoofers. Sounded great!!
+Kuldip Panesar nice setup. I don't think 4ch amps get the credit they deserve for powering subs. I used them for years in 3ch mode, front channels powering components and rear channels bridged to sub(s) 👍
Hey +bill pruett, mine was a CV 154 from 2001, still pumped though, i was lucky to have it replaced under warranty (from the UK) when it burnt out it's coil. Great to meet other like minded people :) Absolutely loved the sound produced by the 15 never got that same sound from any other sub that I had afterwards.
Love the BigDWiz vidoes! My fav! Have you ever dyno'd an old school Punch 240.4 ? I still have an original owner RFG-1240 Punch 240.4 from '97 with the box. Wondering how it's 30w/CH really does.
Wish you could have ran it with the wired remote. All I done was plug it in, and run it to the front. I could barely turn it half way, no changes to any settings. Question, this was one of a few amps I could reverse bridge, others would go into safety mode. What happens when you reverse bridge, when several people seen how it was bridged, they would sort of freak out, saying I was going to burn it up.
I sure do appreciate what you do BigD..ive got the "Power" version of this same amp and been putting the wood to my Boston Pro series 6.5s for a few years now...im certain the power series numbers are similar to the punch series..so now i have an idea of where my numbers are at. now im OUTTA HEEEEERE
Has the near future arrived yet BigD? I'm dying to see what one of my Power 1100a2 will do on the dyno. I have two of them, one on each sub at the moment, wired to 2 ohms mono each... (I have seen your short Dynamic 1 ohm vid, 3,000+ watts is impressive, but would love to see a full dyno video!)
Dereck Have you ever tested the the wattage power of the Rockford Fosgate punch 1000DB mono channel amp? I believe it was produced around from the year 2000, it looks just like the one in this video but I believe it was one of there first attempts going digital? Sorry if im wrong about that but I just love the old school amps, I run this amp in the 400 watt version for my mids and the 1000 watt mono channel for my old school JL audio W3 12inch subs and let me tell you that old school Fosgate moves those 12's like no other! Anyways thanks for the reply when you get a chance. Trevor
Thanks for the videos. They all are great for reference. Appreciate your time. Question, I just purchased an 800a2. I’ve read that a 60amp fuse if recommended. What size fuse should I use at the battery for my setup? I’ll be using that amp for full range with two 12” Delta Pro’s as well as a JL XD600/6 with four 6.5 for highs. Any help would be helpful. Thanks in advanced.
+Jeff DaChef yes! I'm especially interested in the Alpine V-Drive units which are said to have 50 watts per channel. They do require a 10GA power lead direct to the battery, so they may be legit
12 volts to the power supply should result in 36 watts max at the 4 ohm speaker before clipping. Assume 70% efficiency and the rms wattage should be about 18 watts. A better chip amp design should yield that 22 watts rms.
I just scored one of these, a power 500@2 and two HE2'S tens from a used car here at work. When we get trade in's one of our jobs is to refurbish the car back to original . We got a suburban in and I spied this right away and within minutes I had everything stripped out . The funny thing is about three days later some one ( previous owner ) jacked the truck and drove it across the street to meet up with another truck to unload all the Rockford stuff that was sitting in my tool box 🤣😂🤣😂🤣. Not to mention all the warranty seals are still intact and since everything was pro-ish installed in this 2001 burban it was all in like new condition......cost me 0 bucks 😎
Wassup!? Did you ever by chance do a PPI PC2600 chrome dome? I looked but didn't see one. Thinking about getting rid of mine but not sure.. A dyno might change my mind
Hey mister old school stereo. I talked to u about my autotek model 222 awhile back and I was wondering if you would be up for testing on ur channel for your viewers and for me to know what it does? If not I understand. thanks Chad
I have one of these in my closet... still has the end caps. I got it to drive 4 polk 6x9's in a previous car that I traded in. I kept the amp, but was too lazy to pull the speakers. I had tried a sony 4x70, Massive Audio 4x100, but neither could run them for very long at a decent volume without shutting down. The RF would drive them all day long.
I've had several RF amp's back in the day. RF included a "Birth Certificate" with every amp, showing it's actual measured power before being packaged. Not sure if they still do that or not.
I have 800 punch a4 i bridged it to power my 300rms subwoofers but i still got weak power what should I do. ? Please help. I connected the sub Rca to channel 3 and 4.
bro will you test the rockford Fosgate punch p250.2 the one with all the settings terminals rca inputs etc. that are one front of the amp I want to know how much that amp really puts out
I have a question BigDWiz. I bought a punch 800a2. What kind of subs do u think i should run with that amp. I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks in advance...
Possibilities are endless! I would look for either 8 ohm, or DVC 4 ohm subs so you could wire to 4 ohms mono (if doing 2 subs). I'm a huge JL Audio fan, they are a bit more expensive, but man do they perform. On a tighter budget? See the Dayton subs on Parts Express. Can't do much better bang for your buck there.
Anthony Rogers I run two hx2 12’s with mine sounds great never any issues . I have 2 Cerwin Vega 12d4’s I’m selling on eBay right now that would go perfect with that amp too . Only ones for sale in the country that I know of as of this moment .
Hi I'm new to the car audio scene but I found a deal on a Rockford Fosgate model 1001bd amp for $100 is that a good deal? Would you say this is a good amp?
can i still get tthe max power out of this amp if i hook up one 4 gauge power wire and one 4 gauge ground wire or you got to hook up two wires to power slots and 2 wires to negative to get the most power out of this amp?
I have the Rockford Fosgate punch 800a4 & the punch 200ix. any suggestions for a system build? subs, mid bass & ranges & highs. going to put it in a 2014 Chevy cruz Eco
+Robert Massey I would not be the person who can answer this question. Someone who installs daily and knows current products would be a much better source.
@BigDwiz: love ur videos i have a big ? That im not real sure about. I have 2 punch 800a2 power 4 10" alpine type R dvc2ohm. Punch 800a4 powering 4sets of 6.5 jbl gto an 600a4 powering 4 4" an 4 3.5 jbl gto. What im needing to know is batteries u would recommend for this size system . Starting battery plus second if needed. Please help stuck at a stand still.
@@toriwise7217 I have 2 of them and unfortunately they both have issues and need to be overlooked by a tech. I've tried amp tests on both and ran into issues
Thanks for the comment, it sounds really good, prefer it to my old dual amp setup, set the gains with the dd1 as before but much louder...no complaints here
BigDWiz I have one but one of the rca’s inputs is loose sometimes you have to wiggle it to get both subs to play but other than that it’s fine if you want to work something out I can send it to you to test .
love them old Rockford amps had a punch 200ix on two buy one get one free Rockford Fosgate tens from Best Buy on the Left Channel at 2 ohms and two buy one get one free Rockford twelves on the right Channel at 2 ohms and was hitting a 142.3 on the floor board with passenger door open in a 87 Nissan King Cab. and was hitting 139 with the cab sealed. hard to believe how much output you can get out of a 400 watt amp and some cheap speakers
They are both rated for the same power output, but the Power series of amps have a much better crossover system and don't have high level inputs. They are geared more towards precise SQ performance and were mainly seen in competition vehicles or bought by people with money who wanted amazing sound quality. The Punch series, while no slouch, was for the teenagers. Also, with the Power series of the same gen, you could get the Power 1100a2 or 1000a2, which were "rated" at 1400 x1 into 4ohms of clean A/B power.
If by peak you mean the "max" power low quality manufacturers put on things that is nowhere near the RMS rating, then no, because those number are made up by the marketing department
@@RiQWitDaBliQ hey man what are you got that 800a2 running and how does it sound? I just got mine and I'm sitting up the back of my truck now with amp rack I can boxes and so forth.
@@terrykelley6702 i had it running four 10" 8ohm PRV mids for voice but I took it out and put it away, great amp never gave me a problem and pure power. But i aquired a 2000watt soundigital and installed that.
@@terrykelley6702 unfortunately the install is on hold for right now since I work part time and go to school but I’m saving the funds to get the wiring I need to install it and will be running it to some Kicker CS series 6.5 coaxiales until I have the money for some RF T1 6.5 components.
I heard that. I'm in the middle of building my boxes and amp rack and all that and it's very slow going when you want to really make sure you get it right. Just keep Focus man and this build has been going on with me for almost a year myself.
I've had to save and go as the money allows myself and it sucks when you really want to do it so bad but the money stops you. I got two brand-new l710 kickers 125 apiece and that's how I buy my equipment so it takes me a long time as well
@@anthonyc9261 those damn components ought to scream. I just found a set of old old school JBL components for the front of my truck and had to put them on layaway. Brand new in box that I'm going to run my 4oo a4 to.
hey big d I just got one of these amps that was never even used. the punch knob on the rear channel fell off but I am using it for my mids and highs. the amp runs super hot much hotter than my hcca 5000.1d I added a fan lowered the gains more and it seems fine now. I know that is probably operating temperature because I have heard they run hot. very impressed with the results. I have mine on 4 re audio xxx 6.5s and they scream. I have the amp running at 2 ohms as well so that probably attributes to heat. I keep my voltage with 5 batteries and 200 amp alt close to 13 at full tilt. BIG D SORRY FOR THE CAPS BUT CAN YOU PLEASE TEST THE NEW VERSION OF THE HCCA 5000.1D??? I WILL SHIP YOU MINE IF YOU DO AN AMP DYNO ON IT. NO ONE HAS THE RESULTS AND EVERYONE IS DOUBTING THAT IT CAN DO 5K AT 1 OHM. PLEASE SIR AND SORRY AGAIN FOR ALL THE CAPS. I really enjoy watching the amp dynos.
