Tearing down the TOYOTA 1FZ 4.5L Inline 6 engine getting ready for a rebuild out of my 1993 Land Cruiser with the help of my girlfriend! Removing the exhaust and intake manifold, fuel rail, wiring harness, camshafts, buckets, shims, and cylinder head.
Are these motors really as reliable as they say? Just take a look at those cylinders after 230,000 miles! This motor is actually in really good shape inside! The internals look great. The cylinders look amazing and still have the crosshatching after 230,000 miles. We tore it apart because the timing chain guide was broken and it leaks from every possible place a seal exists, and I didn't want to fix all of this in the truck. Much easier with the engine out!

Probably a bit late to be adding my 2¢, but I just found your channel. I'd roll the engine and pull the main caps so you can have a look at the bearing & crank surfaces and use plastiguage to check clearance, that way you can make a completely informed decision. Since your compression is good, there's no reason to do the rings unless you're pulling the crank anyways.

Funny timing. I'm editing a video right now where I tore everything apart, plastigaged it, and it's currently at the machine shop. It will be completely rebuilt besides pistons if I can get away with it. All bearings were in spec and the motor continues to be in very good condition throughout.

The 1fzfe is such a great fun motor to rebuild, ofc, that’s with it being out of the engine bay!

It has some similarities to the 2JZ that I’ve noticed except for the cylinder head. I’m liking it so far!

Great video! We just purchased a 97 LC with a rod knock. Never done an import motor so this was extremely helpful! Glad you decided to go through the bottom end. Good call!

I think u should replace and put new bottom end parts just for ease of mind and knowing everything is done with new parts that way you don’t ever have to open the engine up again. But ultimately it’s your choice if u decide not to replace parts of the bottom end it’s totally up to u. Love the content can’t wait to see what u do with this rig.

Dude perfect timing. Im pulling my motor for a complete rebuild due to a rod bearing failure. This is an awesome reference video. Keep it up! I picked up a new short-block from Toyota now just debating to have my current head brought to a shop for refresh or also build a new OEM head/valves, etc

@@RM_Garage Haha already watched it and took noted. probably going to get a second engine stand but will be pulling the trans as well. I'm dropping the Tcase before the pull as I plan to put in low range 3:1 TC gears.

@@RM_Garage Definitely 👍 I had it forsale due to lack of time. Part of me wants to sell it and part of me wants to keep it. Its not alot of Mechanics in South Florida that work on these engines. Its just parked for now. Im thinking of going for it and learning myself.

Cool truck. If you plan on keeping it for a long time and wi drive it off the grid Do it now. If not. Just a weekend warrior. I would just leave it and change anything else inside. And if you decide to go for the rings. Get them OE toyota.

@aerialrescuesolutions3277
@aerialrescuesolutions3277 Год назад
At least pull the pan off and clean the inside and the pickup screen. Rear main seal, if you are using the old head bolts, run a die over them all as well as tap the block threads. I just did my 22R and I pulled the engine for sure. I installed a dual-row TC and a windage tray/ crank scraper. If you use new head bolts, you should also tap the bolt holes in the block. Your engine has way more stuff on it than mine. I tagged and bagged almost every bolt and took pictures and videos. Great video, thank you for posting, Jim.

@@RM_Garage Go for the gold then, you will be glad about all the power. Those cams just seem complicated to me, the FSM is great, but I would be extra careful with all those steps, although I have never worked on that particular engine before. I'm sure once you do it a few times it's fairly straightforward. Enjoy the build, and I look forward to your next video. Thank you, Jim, Eugene Oregon

My valve cover gasket job turned into the exact same thing yours did. Now I’m doing a lot more than what I’ve bargained for and wish I pulled the motor out. That upper oil pan was a bitch to get out with the motor in the truck. Are you planning on doing new transmission cooler hoses and constant tension hose clamps as well?
@RM_Garage
@RM_Garage Год назад
Yeah. The transmission is coming out and I'll inspect the lines. The hose clamps will definitely be replaced. Anything impossible or difficult to get to will be completely restored/replaced.
@wrmathis2

Replace the head bolts. don't reuse them. should get some ARP head studs if they make some that will work with the engine. The bottom end is up to you. not really sure what I would do for that
@RM_Garage
@RM_Garage Год назад
I plan to test them against the FSM and if anything is out of spec I will replace the bolt. ARP makes a kit for the 2JZ which fits the 1FZ...I may go that route with a cometic MLS gasket. I'm pretty sure I'm going to open the bottom end after thinking about it.
