Do more with less, eventually dwindling down to nothing, locomotives patrol, looking for an aluminum car, fuel costs bankrupt the railroad, back to horses or sea. If UHaul though that way, they'd no longer exist, beyond a local area. They learned from the rail system. As a hint, some cars can weigh 100 tons or more, loaded, do you really think it costs that much to shuttle them to where they can be refilled again?

If the engineer throws it in Notch 8, or full brake application (without going into emergency), the slack action can get pretty rough lol

+waldwickperson I understand. The only thing I wonder about is that the train was still accelerating when the 'bang' happened, and the braking came thereafter. Furthermore, there was no reason for an emergency braking, as far as I can tell (that an emergency braking was performed I learned from the communication between crew and dispatcher).

Ah ok. If it was on a grade, the tail end of the train probably caught up with the cars, and pushed them more than the engines pulling them

+waldwickperson I wonder if any derailments have happened that way. Unfortunately I can't think of any way to implement an easy to use (and reliable) safety system that would prevent that ... (plus it would require changing the braking effort ... so yeah if something goes wrong the brakes might not be strong enough to stop quickly enough in certain circumstances... lol)

First one was a broken coupler and the second was just slack action.

Dated, but yeah, lost slack, then slack tightening due to emergency. But, some other speculation suggested a broken coupler, no, not enough slack to engage breaks, triggering emergency. Looked more like a locomotive emergency and modes were switched until equipment could replace the failed unit, which would now be dead load. There was a pause in traction, followed by a surge, triggering the first bang as slack was lost and regained before slack was regained, then enough loss of traction to give a lower bang of traction loss and train rammed into itself and engine at a lower speed. A air hose burp wouldn't go anywhere near that, broken coupler would halt that part of the train, necessitate a jog down the train, jog back to replace a knuckle or subsidiary equipment that is user replaceable, then proceed onward. More sever, you're talking about more weight than two men could be reasonably expected to carry for any properly decent sized consist, which would immobilize the train for a lengthy period of time.

Yeah if a knuckle broke then there would be too much tension on the air line hose and it would for sure break or snap meaning all pressure in the line would be lost resulting in (A the brakes be engaged due to the Loss in pressure but if you don't know that's just how train brakes work (the trains computer would have recognized the Lost pressure suddenly without the interference or input of a driver therefore putting it into emergency And since the rear half is just kind of on its own after all that broke it would just slam into the back of the other car in front of it because the front half would be an emergency breaking (GOD THAT WAS ALOT I NEED TO RUN MY MOUTH LESS)

@@josephschnoor315 lets just say... they were not supposed to go over 15 mph and able to stop in the half of range of vision... they were up to 25mph at one point and when they realized that.. they went to dynamics and the sudden run in of cars while going into dynamics really hard cause it to shoot the air. if you notice, the conductor told the dispatcher that they never got much more than 10mph. also... at the end, they are going into the siding of palmer yard which is where the Trainmaster (aka boss man) is stationed. you can hear him calling them to stop at the office. When they went into emergency, the Erad told on them and the speed was seen, which wasn't a big deal because it doesn't say what signal you had, but when the dispatcher was called and asked what signal they had, he had to tell the TM that they had permission by the red signal which ment restricted speed. So needless to say... they got ran off for speeding and after the download, they would have seen that the times do not match up from when they started moving after the emergency application and when they talked to the dispacther. He was supposed to tell them if its ok to move or not. they moved without asking so now they have 2 major violations against them. also, you can not go over 10mph after an emergency application until your entire train has cleared that area. there are so many rules that are in place that its easy to miss something especially when you are in a panic like they were. they were trying to hide it and hope that nothing was looked at in depth.

A. Thats common, it seems like it was slack. Ive been on trains that did worse stuff than that. Especially CSX, they can be janky. B. Taggers find trains that are chilling in a spot all night, graffiti takes time, especially the good pieces.

Those people who tag trains like that could make a killing if they actually painted for a living

Standard Gauge Railroader the first bang was likely from the slack that caused the initial emergency; prolly got a knuckle with that. That second bang was simply the front half of the separated train stopped quicker than the rear therefore slamming into the front section. That's what I gathered from it

camera did that zero justice, that thud would have been louder then all hell in person, i use to work next to a railroad (my shop garage door was about 50 feet at most from the tracks) and had a train do an emergency stop like that, it was mid summer and the shop doors were wide open, i literally ran the other direction thinking the train was about to derail

+kevin butler Well, I don't know. I heard these bangs, then saw blue smoke in the distance about a mile away. I walked straight there (my car was on the other side of the train that blocked the crossing!), but when I arrived near the engines, the train started slowly moving again. Inspecting the outside of the engines when I met the train later again, I didn't see anything suspicious. Since I saw blue smoke initially after the bangs, it might have been burning lube oil that caused a blow (in the turbo charger?), but I didn't see any fire.

Yes. That is what I think happened. He passed the yellow red board then he big holes his train. Skack action was the second bang. Then you can hear him get clearance on the radio. In my opinion.

First bang occurred when a locomotive dynamic brakes kicked in slowing the one locomotive but not the cars (slack in knuckles). Second bang occurred when dynamics released (see blended braking). Once the dynamic brakes released, the governor would dump fuel to speed the engine back up to the throttle setting, while the engineer was likely taking the throttle to idle. Smoke could possibly be excess fuel or even dust shaken loose from all the slack action.

I'm new to rail fan stuff, so I hope I remember this correctly. One of my railfan friends explained it to me as a CSX specific way of denoting engines with AC electric traction. Most trains tend to be DC electric powered, and the ones with the lightning bolt are the AC Electric powertrain Locomotives. I've heard this is mostly to help ground crews when building engine consists. Hope this helps.

That's indeed white. It means the train can pass by the red signal at restricted speed (restricted speed is sufficiently slow so that the engineer can stop the train immediately without performing an emergency braking). It typically means that another train is right ahead of him on the same track in the same block.

Winder has many places where one can see the track, mostly from parking lots of businesses. The central crossing at the depot is a good spot, too. I'm occasionally in Winder, but not very often. It's not so close to where I live and the traffic layout is simply bad. It's easy to "lose" a train in Winder.

You can find trains going the train between winder and Athens and Athens to Elberton and Athens to Gainesville

In the mid sixties I used to go up to Winder from Valdosta to pick up 12’x60’ mobile homes and haul em back to Valdosta. Part time work for me. I was in USAF. I think Winder was a Confederate general in civil war. Off topic but great train video. Thanks.

Uh no I think an air hose popped and the bang was slack in the couplers when the cars shoved forwards due to the rear weight pushing the front trying to stop.

It is allowed to photograph trains from public ground. Don't trespass or get too close to the track, though. And yes, someone who takes pictures of trains is always considered a suspicious subject. Be prepared that worried residents call the police. The cops - even if they find it ridiculous by themselves - are supposed to check your ID. Don't hang out for too long in one place, particularly near intermodal yards.

As a railroader who is tolerant of photographers I concur with your advice. Don't trespass. Even if you are on public property but 'appear' to be trespassing, back off a bit. Police may not be legally able to ask for ids but just be polite, explain you are a hobbyist and be prepared to calmly discuss your rights. Intermodal yards, ports and chemical plants are areas I would try to avoid. They're boring anyway. You might even consider wearing a safety vest with bright colors. Try not to do anything that would make railroad operations 'uneasy' We've all encountered railfans who will take dangerous chances for that perfect shot and it makes some nervous. Also be aware that some railfans like "Millenium Force" give the rest of you guys bad reps with crews. They feel like they're under a microscope and likely to be on RU-vid and second guessed by people who don't know wtf they're talking about. Have fun!

These are air hoses and they are part of the air brake system for the entire train. One broken hose is enough to make the entire train stop. All cars and engines have those hoses.

+Jared Klock Thanks! Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with Augusta. One nice spot is the bridge over the river, but I have never seen a train crossing it when I was there. To find really nice spots requires a lot of time of searching and Augusta is too far from where I live to systematically locate the best places for train watching. But there should be some videos by people from that area on youtube.
