YOU'RE AMAZING, KELVIN!! Holy crap! My buddies and I were pulling our hair out over this issue of, "Wait, what?? The manual calls for FIPG, but the thing has a gasket??" two years ago, when we did the T-belt and water pump on my Soarer.

You might notice I don't often use manuals. I think some of the Toyota manuals need updates as I find lot of issues in them these days.

Gidday M8 ! Love Your Gasket Information. I learned the hard way from one of the auto parts stores here in Texas. they insisted molly-be-damned that the gasket for my waterpump had to have Silicone Sealant. I tried it and it buggered up everything. Took it apart and went elsewhere and bought a proper gasket that required no silicone as you have shown to be proper for my vehicle. You save my arse M8 ! Chur Bro !

bonus : the first generation engine non VVTI 1UZFE comes with Grove water pump . But the next generation engines 95' 96' 97' non VVTI comes with flat water pump with steal rubber gasket.

Hello again! Sorry for my intrusiveness, friend. I have a question: I received a cooling water pump for 1uz fe non vvti (sealant installation), it is in the original box of the old TOYOTA model, but there are no identification marks "TOYOTA" or "AISIN" on it and traces of their sawing off. On the shaft from the side of the timing roller there is a small marking "komei wp 1835100". Google says "komei" is Singapore/China. On dry, when rotated by hand, it rustles and rotates moderately tight. Is it possible to put it or look aside at least GMB?

I have a 1997 Ford Taurus doing a water pump change. It has the flat surface and when I bought an OEM it came with a paper gasket. So Kelvin, should I just use a bit of grease to get it to stick and NO advesive or sealant? The shop manual says to apply XXX even though I can't find it and some good online mechanics (on a different car) use only a dab of sealant to keep it in place.

If both surfaces are in good condition , which the new water pump will be , then no requirement for extra sealant , although sometimes to ease my mind on paper gaskets I use a tiny layer of silicone. Cheers Kelvin

@@CartuneNZ thank you! It's been really impossible to get this caked off gasket. I tried using acetone and a razor it's working but very slow and I'm so paranoid to nick some aluminum. I might try loctite chisel gasket remover and if that doesn't work by an electric die grinder and a 3m roloc bristle brush

I appreciate you providing so much information. I have a 2005 3uz and had the water pump replaced about 300 miles ago. But now it is leaking from that water pump. Gauge never showed above normal temperature. Oil is still clean. Can a leak at the pump damage other components, gaskets, belt, etc. regards.

Love the video. I am confused though, did I see silicone gasket maker on the steel gasket that you said didn’t need sealant? Or did you install the water pump without the steal gasket? Thank you. Just trying to figure out if I still need to use sealant with the steal gasket with the flat surface.

Hey Kelvin, with all your expertise on the 1UZ I wonder if you could help me understand the difference in wiring looms. Are all 91-94 SC400/Soarer looms interchangeable with 91-94 SC400/Soarer spec 1UZ? I have a 94 1UZ from a SC400 and believe a 92 loom which is from a SC400 and want to know if it will work normal.

Hello. I have a video coming up on this topic when I wire up the next soarer ecu. For a start soarer are RHD and SC400 are LHD so dont interchange. ECUs swap though. There are differences between model numbers and if they are traction control or not. The main engine sides are the same however the body plugs on some are different. Some swap a few pins around , some have extra plugs which others may not have. I confirm visually that both are the same before swapping or even better prefer to refab the original harness. If doing an engine swap then its less of an issue. Cheers Kelvin

Awesome info on the gaskets, it's been in discussion with people for years and you explained it perfectly. I posted this question on another video but it applies more here. I noticed you have some sealer along with the metal gasket on the WP. (just as a safety measure) Is it a FIPG or just regular sealer? Another question; The cam belt kit I got from Aisin has a metal gasket for the thermostat housing also. (square) I've done a few cam belts/WP on the 1UZ and everything I read and always seen it never has a gasket, just uses FIPG. Is that part of the water pump machined smaller to accept the metal gasket like the back of the newer WP is or should I just stay with FIPG? Keep up the good work. Hope ya had a good vacation.

Hello. If I use a sealant on the steel gaaket its only a tiny amount, either high grade silicone or loctite 518 flange sealant. Only around the outside of the rubber, to act as a backstop. The thermostat housing to waterpump Ive never used a gasket, its FIPG only. I also only use genuine waterpump so can't comment on the one you have but its interesting as Im sure my genuine item is made by Asian.

Love the video Kelvin!! I have been learning along the way from your help back in the Lextreme days when I did my conversion 14years ago.. I'm doing this job again now giving the engine a fresh up and I have discovered I didn't use gaskets on the rear water bridge 🙃 just silicone and it has held up funny enough, definitely used gaskets this time. Now I'm due to do the water pump and timing belt but having a issue getting part numbers, mines a 1992 UCF11 LS400 I have been told the 16100-50021 Water pump Assy is discontinued.. is there a genuine Toyota or AISIN timing belt and water pump kit available? Couldn't share any part numbers.
