BTW if you're not already, it might be good to check the 1Zpresso blog every now and then. They seem to update their instructions periodically and it continues to get better. I accidentally did this to calibrate my grinder trying to figure out how to put it back to zero after cleaning. At first i thought its the ring between the dosing cup and the main body but it was too tight to adjust in my case so i tried another way.

My zero point was at 9, so therefore I adjusted the thumb nut 9 clicks counter-clockwise. Then somehow, my zero point became 3. Tried again: thumb nut 3 clicks counter-clockwise. Then, zero point became 2. Tried again: thumb nut 2 clicks counter-clockwise. That brought me back to 9. What am I doing wrong here?
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 2 года назад
Sorry for the delay. I hope you were able to get this sorted out. If not, have you tried flipping the sliding column around? There's a dot on the bottom of it. If you're already aligning it to the dot on the upper ring, try orienting it in the opposite direction. At least in my case it put me at a better starting point for adjusting the alignment. Also, how tight of a zero point is it at 9? If it's pretty tight, you might actually be at zero already and possibly over-tightening.

How do you know you hit the lowest point? Can the shaft still be turned at the lowest point or have I gone too far?
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
I believe the standard for most hand grinders is to tighten just enough so that it doesn't turn (or barely turns), basically when you let the handle spin (without using your hand) it catches. You don't want to tighten beyond that as there's a potential of damaging the burrs over time. 1Zpresso has notes somewhere in their FAQ/tutorial pages that basically mention the same thing. I do plan on covering this on my next JX-Pro video. Hope to post that soon. Personally, I think of the zero/start/closed position as right before the burrs just barely touch. I usually see this stated for most electric grinders. To me that makes sense because I don't believe there's ever a need to go beyond that. But I suppose it's generally better to go with what the manufacturer specifies, since that's the basis for how they communicate grind settings.

@@davidmaurice1294 yeah! Just gotta dial in my grind now. I’m getting there. :D
@АлександрКорзубый
Got a coffee grinder with aliexpress. From 1 to 9 clicks clings with one side of the millstone. And with only 10 clicks, it scrolls without touching. Do you think this is a marriage? In my opinion, the shaft is not even! I thought from the first click there should be free rotation if everything is well centered. I haven’t ground coffee yet and hasn’t taken apart. I don't know what to do, whether to return it to the seller or not.
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
Sorry to hear that. Yeah, sounds like the burrs are misaligned. I had the same issue with my JX-Pro, although it was entirely my fault. I messed with the alignment screws not knowing what they were there for. I was able to realign the burrs myself, but not sure how that's done (or if possible) on your grinder. If it's not too much of a pain, I'd return it. Otherwise see if the seller can help. Maybe there's a way to adjust? But I wouldn't do anything yet or take it apart until checking with the seller.

@@АлександрКорзубый I think I understood. When my burrs were misaligned, it would catch on one side. Adjusting to where it didn't touch left one side at Turkish and the other side courser than espresso. The grind distribution was very inconsistent. As mentioned, I was able to realign and the grinds are very consistent now.

I can get mine zeroed out or just about there fairly easy, however my issue is my JX pro is off by the grind guide by a near double magnitude. Like it says 4.2 to 5.0 for French press grind, however my 42-50 is way too fine (it's basically medium), so I have to do 7.0-8.0-almost 9.0 (dial about to come off at that point). I wonder what I could be doing wrong when I reassembled or what not. I know the guide isn't 100% spot on , but the variation shouldn't be near double. I actually am probably going to exchange my pro for another one, but will have both on hand for a short period and I'll see what I did or didn't do wrong (maybe my unit is bad?)
@wendtils
@wendtils 11 месяцев назад
Your grinder may not be defective as I have the same experience. The guide notes somewhere around 3.0 to 3.6 for pour over, but there have been plenty of coffees that I found taste much better at 4.5. Generally I have found the guide that comes with the product to lean finer, so I’m not surprised to hear you have better French press results at 7.0. Keep in mind that more rotation is required at coarser levels to make a difference.

Thanks again, I'll be sure to consider voiceover for future videos. But I plan to start mixing it up a little. For some I might do them without voice because I can knock them out more frequently (mostly quick guides or short daily routine videos). But for my more involved ones, I do plan to continue using a voiceover. You wouldn't believe though how many takes I need and all the editing just for the little bit that I speak, haha! I'm glad you think my videos are better with voice. Definitely makes it worth it. I hope I can get better with that and for it to feel more natural. The only way for that to happen though is to keep doing them. That being said I have two more short JX-Pro videos I want to do real quick to cover the other areas in my original video, and I'll be doing those without voiceover. After that I'll likely go back to my normal format for the next few I'm guessing.

Hey, i got like minus 1 dot/click to zero when i try to close the nut clockwise and find the end of it, is it normal? Because it doesn't end at #zero, but minus 1 click/ dot to zero. Thanks for the guide
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
When you get to the 1 click passed zero, is it tight? I consider zero to be where the handle has just enough weight for it to fall on it's own. I have another video that discusses that (my JX-Pro Update video). If you're not able to turn the handle at all, it might be too tight. There's some wiggle room for what's considered zero. Technically, it's is when the burrs just touch, but you'll find that you can continue to tighten beyond that (probably not great for the burrs though). There's more to it than that, but hopefully it helps as a starting point. I do plan on another video detailing burr alignment (which will touch on this), but it's going a little slow. Hopefully will get it done soon. For now, I wouldn't worry too much about your zero point being one click off.

At least for where I live, the local hardware store will do simple straight cuts for free. I'm able to find wood at Home Depot or Lowes that are already sold at the proper width and height (basically .75 in x 1.5 in). If you can find something like that in your location, maybe your hardware store can cut it to length (~2.5 in)?

Hi David! After the grinder is all assembled, is it normal for the burr to still move up and down or should it stay tightly in place? I think I might have not assembled my grinder correctly
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 2 года назад
Sorry for the delay, hopefully you've resolved it. There is a spring as part of the assembly that keeps tension on the burr and holds it in place. It shouldn't freely move up and down, but it does move when you press against it.

Hey David, my zero point used to be at 8 and I could grind for espresso at about 1.6.0-1.8.0. After making my 0 point 0, for some reason grinding at 1.6.0 gets me Turkish grinds way finer than espresso grinds. It took about a minute and a half preinfusion on my Flair to get the entire puck wet 😂 Is there any reason it does this ? Did I assemble something wrongly? 8 is just 8 clicks away from 0..
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
I wonder if maybe the zero point is tighter than before? Not sure if that makes sense but I find that you can sometimes over tighten to get it to "0". Also I'm still investigating what some others have mentioned about them losing their zero calibration (i.e. it somehow changes over time), so not sure if this might be a factor. I've been focused on my next Flair mod (electric pre-heat on the Pro2) so haven't had much time to tinker more with the JX-Pro. Almost done with the mod, so hopefully can get back to it soon. I hope to do another JX-Pro video with additional things I've learned. In the meantime, are you already a member of the Brew with Flair Facebook group? It can almost be considered an unofficial JX-Pro group since there are so many people there with that grinder. You might also want to try posting your question there.

Hi David. Just curious, you say in the video that 1Zpresso say that you need to adjust the thumb nut one click for every number that you are out? Can i please ask you, who at 1Zpresso told you that?
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
I got that information from their blog on this post 1zpresso.coffee/calibration/. In general they have a good set of articles that go over all the details for each of their grinders. I do recommend people check that out and I've found their guides really helpful, especially since it's a little harder finding good information elsewhere compared to some of the other popular grinders.

@@davidmaurice1294 Sorry David, i think that you misunderstood me. I am actually a 1Zpresso dealer, I have been selling their grinders for quite a while now. But one thing that is a real problem and something that i have to keep explaining to my customers all the time, is how to get the Zero number to start with. I even did my own video about how i figured out a work around to this problem. I actually tried the knurled thumb nut method that 1Zpresso mention on their website and i could not get it to work. I tried all kinds of ways to get it to work using their method, but 9 times out of 10 i was always out, or the number went over the Zero number, its just not consistent. I have managed to get their method to work a couple of times, but obviously you need to calibrate the grinder again after you take it apart to clean and it seems like it just is not consistent and does not work every time. I personally always start with the adjustment dial with the zero number at the top to start, this at least gives you a reference number. But i am not even sure if this matters, i just seems so random. Thats why i was very curious about you saying that you need to open the thumb nut one click for every number that you are out, nobody from 1Zpresso has ever said that to me and i have asked them many times about this. Also it does not really say that on their website, it just kind of says that you need to open the thumb nut either 1, 2 or 3 clicks, at least for the JX-Pro anyway. The k Series are pretty different. Its good that you managed to get this to work for you. I was interested in your method, but i have tried many different methods and when i tried yours, i was still out, or over by one number. This kind of leads me to believe that each grinder is different somehow, maybe the top ring, or the tooling for the threads? Anyway thanks for the great video.
@davidmaurice1294
@davidmaurice1294 3 года назад
Thanks for the detailed account. I have been able to calibrate to '0' pretty consistently, but do admit there are some oddities. Also another person commented that they sometimes lose their zero setting at some point after grinding. I believe I have experienced that too, although not dramatically. I think I need more time with the JX-Pro to really understand the ins and outs. I'm definitely planning on another follow up video based on all the comments from these videos. I'm going to look into calibration further and try to understand it beyond 1Zpresso's guide, especially since it doesn't seem to be working for everyone. I will for sure experiment using some of your techniques and let you know if I find out anything new. If you run across some additional insights please let me know as well. Hopefully we'll eventually have some sort of definitive guide, although 1Zpresso should be doing this and not us, haha.
@mightymightyironhead
@mightymightyironhead 3 года назад
@@davidmaurice1294 yes its a little frustrating to say the least. I really rate 1Zpresso grinders and i can not really fault them apart from this one problem with the zero number being a pain to get right, its always the first and pretty much the only question i get asked by most of my customers. I have looked around the internet a lot and there is not really any useful information regarding this, there are a lot of posts and talk of the knurled thumb nut method, but like i said, that's not that easy for a lot of people to understand, especially for people who don't speak English, of who don't understand the translation into English on the 1Zpresso website, so any further information is always welcome. I am going to talk to 1Zpresso later today and i am going to ask them again if its possible to update this information on their website and maybe include a better translation and a step by step guide. Anyway David have a great weekend.
