At least 2,000 jobs have been created following the expansion of Ruiru-based Burn Manufacturing Ltd, the manufacturers and distributors of fuel-efficient cooking appliances such as Jikokoa Classic and Jikokoa Xtra, that save lives and forests.
According to Peter Scott, the managing director, Sh 3 billion has been spent in the expansion process that will see the company increase its productivity to about 2 million units yearly.
The development involves expansion of the company’s production facilities from the original 20,000 square feet in 2015 to now over 200,000 square feet.
Speaking during the official opening of the modern plant at the Ruiru Business Park in Kiambu County yesterday, Scott said the company has established markets in the African region and intends to reach out to Asian countries in the near future.
Kiambu Deputy Governor Rosemary Kirika who was present during the official opening hailed the company's products as beneficial on economic, health and environmental perspectives.
Kirika stated that the county is committed to improving the business environment to generally institutionalize productivity in the enterprise sector and spark a much-needed industrial rebirth.
Sasha Gallant, the team leader for Development Innovation Ventures at USAID lauded the company for demonstrating commitment in supporting energy efficiency, climate resilience, job creation and exports to the region and has demonstrated cost savings for customers who switch to their stoves while also reducing carbon emissions.
Gallant insisted that such firms represent the U.S. government’s priorities for Africa and underscores that Africa is open for business and that the private sector is a critical partner to achieve shared goals in global development, improving the lives of so many across the region.
She revealed that USAID will partner with Burn to facilitate its expansion across the continent, besides continuing to launch new products and create new jobs.
