I made two slips (or long camisoles) in two different knit fabrics and used Fold over elastic for the neckline and straps. I also made them to be “reversible” because they have a V neckline and a round neckline that can be worn front to back interchangeably! Super versatile. I am sharing all the sewing footage of the fun.

They make fold over elastic for a reason - and this a great place to use it. It would be a pain to make your own bindings. Great suggestion for a pattern. I think a lot of ladies would like to give this a try.

Thanks Karina for showing us how it fits. You convinced me to buy the pattern because of that. You also make the fold over elastic look less daunting and I never would have thought to use it for the straps. Now I can't wait to make it.

I did manage to get the pattern eventually and have to say I am really pleased with the cami I have made from it. I also watched your thrift blouses video so also cut out another two from two overlarge t shirts I had decided to thrift because I have lost quite a lot of weight. So they were recycled and now I have three camis and am super pleased. Thank you so much for your videos.

Lovely basic slips. Slips are hard to buy now. I think young girls and women don’t wear them anymore. All I can find are those granny slips (and I am a great-gran) with the wide lace on the top that bunches and puckers under your dress. The lady who makes Oh Lulu lingerie patterns has some great tutorial on applying fold-over elastic, also Mellie Sews.

The ones I see are not slips, they are “sexy” shape wear and it’s not what I want to wear (uncomfortable). Making them was the best! I’m hooked now. They were easy to make.

Creative choice of fabric that would not have occurred to me. After frustration trying to thread those overlocker threads through a needle I have had faster results with a small metal crochet hook that does not get lost so easily.

These look wonderful! It shouldn't be so hard to find a basic slip, but I think a lot of women are so used to not finding slips to purchase that they just don't wear them, even when maybe they should. For some sleeveless dress the underarm on yours may be a tiny bit high and be visible as you move. Then with sliders you could adjust the straps so the the underarm hits a tiny bit lower. But that will probably never happen (a sheer sleeveless dress). I love that elastic! Looks super useful and practical ... and easy to use! Remind me what top you're wearing, if you can ... Looks amazing on you! Thanks, Karina. 💚💚💚

I LOVE the idea of making the slip reversible and also the way that you put it together sewing the side seams last. I’m going to follow these tricks making some slips and camis of my own. I need some rayon slips (polyester and nylon=sweat and B.O. for me) and I can’t find rain slips in the store. Thanks for the great video!

Hi Karina ... great video. I actually reached out to Tami earlier in the year about this exact hack. I noticed the reversible neckline in the stores and though it would be a great option in a pattern. In the stores they always charge so much for simple things like this, they're never the right size and the fabric/color options are always so limited. Have a feeling it will be a very useful layering piece for me. Thanks for the tutorial. I just received an order of FOE and lingerie fabrics and plan to make a cami and nighty next.

I’ve noticed this feature too for a very long time with my own RTW slips and camis. They are old and showing wear and tear. The ones I find here in Brazil are full of transparency and features I don’t want/need. I’m happy my video was helpful :)

@@LiftingPinsandNeedles One question, I see your FOE is perfect and not jogged at the edge ... is there a 'trick' to serging the side seams so the ends align? Sometimes it works for me but most times it doesn't. I'm not sure what I'm doing to cause the inconsistency.

I have made a couple of cami nighties from this pattern. In the first, I found the neckline really low and as I'd used self made edging, it also stretched slightly with wear, becoming even lower. On the second, I struggled to use those adjusters. The next one, I will use fold over elastic and measure; it makes sense now you've said it, thank you. Two questions please : one, why did you not leave the fold over elastic unsewn for a wider strap? And two, how did you hem the black slip please? Thank you,
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 4 года назад
The elastic would not sit right unsewn at the straps since it’s one continuous stitch involving the partial armscye where it needs to be folded to cover the raw areas Also it would be too thin and it would stretch if not folded. Also, it goes inside clothes, so the thickness of the strap does not matters like it does with outerwear. Many reasons 😄. I hemmed by turning under 3/4” and using a twin needle. I think the fabric binding needs to be made from a knit with high elastane content and recovery for it to not stretch out. I could’ve used the swim fabric but wanted to try the novelty of the elastic.

I hope you area able to stay home, wear a mask if you have to go out and social distance 6 feet, and wash hands alot. That is what we are doing to try to stay safe.

Yes it’s true. My local mayor and governor have made masks mandatory and people are taking the right precautions here, maybe because I live in a rural area, this seems more controlled here. My son and I don’t go out at all. We’ve been inside since March 10th. My husband leaves the house only for the essential food every 10 days or so and he is paranoid with the precautions too.

Hello Karina! Thank you very kindly for this tutorial. This came right on time because I am having several issues with fabric availability, reasonable prices and mobility due to "the situation". I looked for tricot and, no tricot to be found. Then I received a Mood Fabric notice: Tricot Galore! and when I looked, I was shocked. Over $21 a yard and all printed. So I am trying to figure out how I can make a slippery fabric cami to wear under fabric that is too sheer for my liking (but the price was reasonable). Rayon span is challenging to find but maybe I can find ITY when our stores open again. So thank you very much for your fabric ideas because after tricot, I had no ideas. Question: given the climate you live in, how does your swimsuit fabric slip feel on you? Is it hot? Thank you also for your suggesting from Love Notions also and your modification for the V neck. Needed this as well! XOXO

The fabric feels cool on. It’s polyamide and it’s wicking. I like the feel. Knit fabrics can be pricey unfortunately:(

Karina, what would you recommend for hot summer weather? I have a single gauze that I’m going to make into a dress- should I do a woven slip instead? Not sure what the best fabric would be to use. Thanks in advance!

I like the feel of rayon spandex for a fresh feel. In Spain it could be called viscolycra or viscosa con elastano. You could make a woven slip with a woven cami pattern like the Ogden cami for sure too 😃.

Hi Karina... great tutorial thank you muchly. I’d love to use this pattern unfortunately my hip measurements are a 4x in the L.N size range.. bust is at 2x grading to a 4x.. is there any chance for me to extend the sizing for this pattern for me? Your help and advice would be Greatly Appreciated. Cheers from Australia

I think grading the hips is the easier places to grade. Look at the distance between the 2x and the 3x at the hips and draw another line in the same distance. Then blend to the size you need for the bust and waist :)

Hi Karina have you made the srap that goes over the shoulder with biaz binding before. Can it work 🤗
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 3 года назад
I made more with binding made from the same knit as the main garment but it’s not bias tape, it’s not cut on the bias, it’s a knit and it does not need to be on the bias. You can see it here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xStYY-RGhzo.html

Could I adapt the shoulder so that the straps are wider over the shoulders, I find the straps just fall off my shoulders otherwise. Looking at the pattern it goes to a point.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 4 года назад
The straps are always very narrow in cami tops like this, especially with the fold over elastic. The option I see is to make self binding that is wider, but the binding can’t really made súper súper wide either. I’d say the widest a binding could work is a finished width of 3/4”. Wider and it will not lay right or conform to the curves of the body.

The pattern will be updated to 5x at some point but if you know how to grade, you can. Grading is not something I can explain in a written comment here.
