Both. We know some names were given at birth. We also know that the record keepers in the Bible (and therefore likely in the Book of Mormon as well) would give a literary name (like a nickname) to make the purposes of that portion of the record to be far more memorable.

You two took me to a different place with the commentary on "land" = temple and literary names. The notion of land as temple in light of the number of temples that now stretch around the world moved me away from reading "promised land" in a nationalistic way. The idea of literary names makes sense and takes me understand the scriptures as teaching in a mystical way.

And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just-yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them-therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God. 14:57 Thank you for the repetition about the meaning of Nephi’s name over the years. I finally looked at the academic research this year and was surprised by the insight from the cloud of witnesses. A quick summary from Wikipedia for the word Nefer shows that the hieroglyph is a sheep heart connected to the throat and has the additional meaning of Perfect or complete. Nephi certainly had the heart of the Lamb and used his throat to teach us his word.

I completely agree with Taylor that there are other scriptures that speak so clearly about the Atonement of Jesus Christ than 2 Nephi Chapter 2.
