I'm doing research kayak and this is one of the coolest videos on a kayak to Catalina I've seen on YT. The music compliments the video well. Thanks for sharing.
2:11 That is a mola-mola, aka sunfish. They are the heaviest bony fish known to man. They live on jellyfish and usually reside in the depths, but they come up and lay on their sides to let birds eat barnacles/parasites off their hides. I've kayaked to Catalina a few times (without the benefit or leg pedals) and it's not something to take lightly. First of all, paddling across a major shipping lane like San Pedro is like walking across a busy freeway. Except those container ships don't have brakes! If you embark in the morning (which is usually preferable to avoid the wind and chop), be aware that you may be in the morning sun's reflection and therefore invisible to those high-speed container ship pilots! Nice vid. Cool adventure. Stay safe.
Bad Ass video! Nice job!!!! You guys have cajones!! I have a 37 ft sailboat, and I still have issues doing the crossing from San Diego. I have seen hobie cats like yours out on the bay. You guys have guts!! Congrats!!!
Cool trip. I’m thinking of doing it this Summer. Did you guys launch from Cabrillo? And if so, where do you park your car overnight? Thanks for the great video.
