I have two questions that you can ask yourself that will change the way you declutter forever. The purpose of these questions is to get to the heart of your genuine attitude toward your stuff, and if you ask these questions, they will help you make decluttering decisions quicker and with a lot less stress. So let’s talk about what these questions are.
The simplest way to start decluttering your life ⇩

The question that resonates with me is question #2. If someone were to offer me money for this would I part with it. The answer is yes, so I will be taking active steps to declutter my wardrobe. I will attempt to sell them on second hand sites, if not I will donate them.

"If I lose it, would I replace it" and "would I take money for this item," when you boil them down to their essence, mean "do I love this?" (Or, "does this item spark joy?") It's all getting at the same thing. When you are surrounded only by the things you love, your life actually changes. Imagine...walking into your space, surrounded by love and only love, and not "oh, THAT needs to be fixed, THAT needs to go to the trash..." When you love your stuff and your stuff loves you back, it's an amazing feeling.

Yes. I will say there are some items that I own that do spark joy but I wouldn't replace, either because they are sentimental items so a copy wouldn't be the same anyway or it's something decorative that I love but I wouldn't want to spend money chasing after an exact copy of. But the question does help with practical tools or things like books. I would replace my game controller with the same version, I would buy another kettle, I would need another bathrobe, that sort of thing. The second question is good to separate out the, I like it but don't love it stuff. I might enjoy it for a while but know that I'll be getting rid of it sooner rather than later.
@jesusislord7488

Aaah, I disagree a bit. If I lose my toilet plunger, I’ll replace it…but I don’t love my toilet plunger nor does it spark joy. Also, I really don’t want any objects (material possessions) to give me joy or rise to a level of love. Just a different worldview, I guess. And I guess that means decluttering may mean different things to different people, and maybe done for different reasons. Peace ❤
@thisnthat42
@thisnthat42 Год назад
@@jesusislord7488 A toilet plunger is not beautiful to look at but it is a useful tool and having the right tools when you need them to me is a source of joy. It’s not shout it from the roof tops joy but it’s a quiet appreciation for having the needed tool for the job.

I feel like your content just continues to get better over time, Ronald! I love how your stance on minimalism has evolved more into helping to adjust our mindsets, rather than keeping the focus on just the material stuff. Keep up the great work! 😊

I recently started replacing some of my Star Wars figures (with better versions) that I sold & donated 5 years ago when I got into minimalism. Still keeping it minimal (one shelf & very intentional purchases) but now I realise the joy my SW shelf brings me. Whereas they used to be boxed up and stored away, now they're opened and on a display I enjoy on a daily basis.

Of all the decluttering questions offered by so many decluttering encouragers, these had the most impact on me--really stopped me in my tracks when I asked myself. I'm stunned how little I would try to replace...and most of the things that come to mind could not be replaced (heirlooms) anyway. I guess the tricky part is to ask myself the questions, then act on my answers! Thank you for sharing your insights and wisdom week after week. You're a gifted communicator. Thank you.

I haven't finished the video, but I think I'm about to cry ...a lot. Something you just said really really resonated and reached my brain. I opened a storage container with T-shirts in it this morning. I looked at them all, I remembered when I bought them, and I put them all back. I don't wear them. One of them is three sizes too big for me. 😳😣🤦🏽‍♀️ Why don't I just get rid of them? One I will keep. One has very, very sentimental value. It is irreplaceable and I will keep it. God bless you!!!!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💕 (Will be donating to the local homeless shelter, a whole mile away.)

Love these questions! I’ve had a time where I lost my water tumbler at work and I immediately went out to buy a new one to replace it. I reflect back and question myself for being so quick to rebuy, when I should have waited at least a week to question myself if I can go without it - or possibly find the tumbler at a later time. Thanks for promoting these questions in my declutter and buy less journey!

I get the impression people are madly in love with money. I consider it important to offer safety and opportunity. I do save it up. I also challenge myself to not buy some items to save money. The things I love are vintage and many of them I wouldn't often run across them to replace or it would take a long time. I just usually focus on that I can't have everything. Others will also love it, I hope. And what will work together and make my home a haven and not just a store house.

Thank you. These questions act as excellent mental/emotional filters. I was struggling recently to decide if I should sell some items that I’ve collected over the last 25 years or so. When I come across items that I can't quite make a decision about, but didn't really know that I had, I ask what I would do if I didn't have that item? Since so much of the time, I didn't know I had it, I figure that I won't know that I don't have it, either, so it can go. Or I can sometimes see something that I would use instead anyway. Either way, that question has helped me tremendously.

I'm not quite sure I follow the rationale of the second question about someone offering you money for a particular item... determining whether or not you want or need it. If someone walks up and offers you $100 for shirt That only cost you 20 bucks, you would probably give them the shirt. But does that really determine whether or not it needed to be decluttered in the first place?🤔 Perhaps I'm oversimplifying.

Some time ago I lost my favourite necklace. I spent months looking into stores for that necklace, but with no luck. When I finally found one that was nearly similar, I was so relieved! The same would happen with one other necklace, if I lost that. When I think about your first question as a criteria, I wonder if I could let go of the 20 other necklaces, which I have no such feelings for... It's so hard though! Because "what if I need this" for an other outfit? It seems such a waste to get rid of something perfectly fine. The struggle! >__< Anyway, thank you for your content. Thank you Mr. Banks! 🤚🏻This is a great way to start the week!!!! I think both of these questions are the essence of creating a new life for one self. I don’t have trouble with parting with ‘things’ but I have noticed a pattern with having several boxes to bring to charity all too regularly. That tells me that what I bring in isn’t working for me. I live way below the poverty line and get into town once or twice a month... I have been journaling regularly for a few months and still can seem to pin point what is going on. Sometimes I get so frustrated. Would you consider tackling this problem?
@RonaldLBanks
@RonaldLBanks Год назад
Hey Susan… Great question and you’re right. If you’ve noticed a pattern of having several boxes of stuff you’re constantly donating. Then I agree with you, something isn’t working. Now without digging too much into your personal journey in a public space like this, I have a question for you: What are your core values? The reason I ask is because it sounds to me like there is a disconnect between what you “think is” important to you and what “is” important to you. It’s possible that the reason the things you’re bringing into your life aren’t working for you, is because they don’t completely align with your actual values. If there is a disconnect there then you’ll start to notice that pattern you’ve talked about. It’s also important to note that as we grow on our journey, our values will change. So even if you think you know what they are it’s good practice to review and realign yourself. You can do this with my free core values worksheet: www.ronaldlbanks.com/values Next steps after would be to observe your behavior and make it a priority to keep your values front and center in all that you do and in every decision you make. Hope this helps! If you have any questions or you want to dive into this further shoot me an email.

@@RonaldLBanks Thank you for a great response! I appreciate the time that you gave to my question. Next, an update. After reading your thoughts I decided to revisit my values again using your core value work sheet. To my great surprise my values had changed ( I didn’t even realize this was possible but of course makes perfect sense) as I myself had changed as a person. After much thinking /journaling I recognized that 1) I needed to complete the final process of clearing items that weren’t ‘me’ without the quilt, worry, cost or opinions of others. Those constant trips to the donation store were my way of not feeling so bad and hiding just how much I wanted to get rid of - nearly 95% of my stuff over a couple of years. 2) secondly, to stop making purchases that were not in keeping with my values as temporary emotional support ( better than nothing... maybe this will fix the pain mentality) 3) Get clear on how I can better live my values both emotionally as well as physically in my space. While it certainly isn’t all done yet I wanted to take a moment to say Thank you 🙏 I’m on a much better path to being true to me. 💕🇨🇦

Thank you so much for your insightful advice. I've started the whole process of decluttering and reorganising my house, which is overwhelming at times! So far my wardrobe is the hardest (it's been 4 days so far🙃) I haven't let go of as much as I hoped for but I know that it will be easier now that it's organised and I can see everything. I'll keep reviewing what I have and continue decluttering 🤞

These are very interesting questions and I think much better than the standard ones that you always hear. The first question is the one that really resonated with me. I feel like I have done a good job and then a few weeks later I look around and I think wow I did not do as much as I think.

The question if smn paid me for this is really unique and changed my perspective. I have a few items I have struggled to declutter for over 20 years. They are special to me, I don't wanna get rid of them, but at the same time they are bugging me and if smn paid me just a little but needed it I would totally and gladly got rid of those. I would be happy! Game changing question! Thank you :)

Gray shirts. This is most of my wardrobe. Black and gray clothes. Im just not wasting time deciding what to wear. After 2020, I ask if it's comfy. That's what I choose.

The question asking “would I take money for this,” is a trap for me and I am sure others. Yes, I could sell, and make a few dollars, but I tend to hold things for this reason. Antiques, collectibles, they are a trap. I have learned to donate many things. I love your content, and your voice. My latest question is, is this worth carrying thru climate change? And I am serious.

The speaker discusses the challenges of decluttering and presents two questions: 1) Would I actively replace this item if lost? 2) Would I part with it for money? These questions help reevaluate our attachment to possessions for a clutter-free life.

Good lord I loved this so much! I have a family quilt, torn by my dog, I was sad and said I can mend it, but there it sits a year later, unmended. What does that say about how much I really want to use it/ have it? Thank you for this insight, I want to paint it on my wall!

Really enjoy absorbing your ideas! In the journey of streamlining my life, a prominent aspect from childhood was understanding and evaluating the motivations from a confusing and irrational scarcity mentality. This untangled a lot of needless cultural programing.

"If somebody offered me money for this item, would I sell it?" Brilliant question Ron, this is probably the most helpful question ever in terms of decluttering & determining what truly holds value! 😀
