Not a messy person but I tend to keep stuffs for ‘what if in future…’ & procrastinated stuffs for next action to do with that stuffs. 😅

I'm a messy person and I was decluttering this morning and got overwhelmed. How did I accumulate so much crap. Then I remembered to stay calm and this is a marathon, not a sprint. I did manage to put 11 things in my declutter box (which is a great suggestion by the way!). I'll do a little bit more tomorrow. :)

Messy person with a messy family! I like your tip to focus on one thing at a time, a whole messy house is so overwhelming. I've started keeping a "donate" box by the back door so I can just toss things in as I go, so that resonates with me.

I’m a messy person by nature, but I’ve improved greatly as I’ve aged. I appreciate the idea of “ decluttering as you live”. That helps me to embrace the process, instead of approaching decluttering as some major event. Good information.

@RonaldLBanks 3 года назад
It should never feel like a major event. This is a journey and once you commit you’ll be on it as long as you stay committed. Meaning you’re never truly done decluttering. As life goes on and you continue to live and consume, you’ll also continue to declutter. Keep growing on your journey Kirkland! Let me know if have any questions!

I was messy for a long time. I was 34 with 3 kids, husband, pets, house, garden… before it clicked that the only person tidying up was me!! No wonder I was stressed and depressed and my life falling apart. I started putting things away as I used them, life-changing. Decluttering came next (no more just-in-case hoarding), later I adjusted my shopping attitudes. It all took years and is ongoing but life is so much more manageable. I am now a grandmother and kind of wish I‘d been like this for my own kids, but enjoy things how they are now, it‘s so much calmer and more peaceful as well as less work 😀

I feel you! I have the same challenge! Here is what you do: get two,stackable, nice, clear plastic bin with a lid at about a 50/60 litres volume size (I'm Norwegian so I do Litres). Lable one : "up size" and with the date you packed it. Lable the next "down size" with the date you packed it. Fill them with "up": clothes that are currently too big. "Down" : currently too small. Pack them neatly and nicely 😊❤️ it feels good to care for your things. When your done put them somewhere in your home where you don't see them everyday or run into them like a storage room, an attic or a closet away from the closet where you get dressed. The only clothes that matter are the ones that fit you RIGHT NOW. To feel ok with how you are NOW. Seeing clothes that don't fit, in your wardrobe every day, is bad for your mind and self esteem. Do this and you don't have to waste anything and you can let time test the items in the boxes. If your body changes: they are there and ready for you. If you miss them they are there and ready for you. If after a year you haven't used any of it just take them straight uto the donation center. Set an alarm in your phone one year ahead in time when you pack the boxes. I hope this works for you!

@@Miss_Annlaug I did almost the same thing and it worked out so well! When I went back through my clothing, quite some time later, I was able to quickly decide what I still liked out of what I able to fit back into and donated those that didn't meet either criteria. It was a little like "shopping" my own closet. 😁

Ive been very messy and so has my husband.I haven’t always been this way.People that have met me in the last 6-8 years,have a hard time believing I had a home that had structure and order to it.Jikes often will be made at my expense. I’m struggling right now to start fresh.I’m an emotional basket case,an empath,and analyze the shit out of everything. my living conditions and lack of not having my own home anymore (burned down 3-4 years ago) have resulted in me being extremely depressed,ptsd,angry,volatile,extremely sad,….So ya.Everything you said makes perfect sense to me and sounds logical.There are piles everywhere and am extremely overwhelmed most days.

I'm still on my path towards minimalism or at least owning less. I love my books bc I need them for my profession and my faith, so books are something I'll never give up. Aside from that, I don't need anything else except my clothes. Even though I recognize this, it's still hard to declutter. I've gone through everything so many times.

I can relate! I'm an artist and I own more art supplies now than BEFORE O downsized! Ha! We should own what we love! But less of the mess of course. Your right we need very little really. There is great freedom in that. But what's holding you back from getting it completely done?

Totally agree, first step is your mindset. Once I figured this out I was on my decluttering journey. But step by step, bit by bit and a lot of pacience. Now into it a few years and still feeling better after removing objects from my space small or big. I feel less stressed to see empty areas in my home and much easier to clean. My dumping ground is in the shed, I donate, sell and throw away, I also have a "think about it" area in the shed until I'm sure I want to remove it from my life. I enjoy your videos and will watch them when I need to get motivated again to continue decluttering. I had so much clutter! Now reduced but I'm still sorting out things. Thanks for your help! No I'm not a messy person but I couldn't fit anything more into my cupboards.

Glancing around the house (in my mind), we have at least one "dumping ground" in every single room. A chair in a corner on the way to the next room. Any flat surface on the way to somewhere. Or any corner out of the way. I need to redesign my "stuff" life. I did successfully eliminate one major hotspot or dumping ground in the past. I moved the dining room table away from a pass through / walkway location by swapping the living room and dining room locations. Stays clear now, as people are not passing by it to dump onto, unless intentionally using it. And we intentionally did not replace with a coffee table.

I see all these clean and decluttered homes in the minimalism videos and it makes me freak out inside thinking it needs more stuff all over! Like how some people get stressed from a mess... I get stressed from seeing the lack of stuff. *edit: I realized... My 5 year old self lost my daddy to prison. My mom and our family moved into a BRAND new home completely clean, and empty from our move... I guess I loved the home so much... But all I wanted to do was fill it with things like we had before... But I really just wanted to fill it with my daddy again. Sheesh... 💡 Lol! He came home 6 years later, and don't worry, the lack of personal items while in prison helped him jump on board with my feelings of lacking, and we filled that house up right away. 😂😂😂 ...lost him to covid a few months ago. 17 years with you were better than the 6 years without you. I love you, stuff and all... But I need to learn to live with less now. Less stuff, not less you. ❤ #RIPDad

They start out as "decluttering zones" like you also mention here, but then over time I don't do anything with them coz taking the time to sort through them is just... brain-numbing 😅 so for a procastinator like me, I just need to dump as I go otherwise the decluttering zone never gets dumped!

You spoke about the place where the clutter had a habit to centralize and I suddenly realized it was my synthesizer that was cluttered the most. And that is though I want to be a composer, I try to study something about it and... And it is just that my instrument is unused burnt under the mountain of some stuff. It is very depressive to clearly see that now after you have said the point. Thank you, it in some way just opened my eyes. I need to do something about this whole situation.

I am a messy person who is slowly converting to a an organized one. Last spring started a journey to find a "home" for everything. (Watched your 1st declutter video among others to get started.) It's still a journey. so this video resonated because i have plenty of places to store things (ironing board up, plastic bins, etc.) that need to be eliminated and force me to put things in their homes. Thanks for sharing!

messy person (who hates a mess) with ADHD, trying to get over some hoarding tendencies. I like your approach and how calming you are in your videos. I want to implement the basket in places that collect clutter. I have a bin in the bedroom that I put stuff to donate in, but I rarely get around to actually donating it. Hopefully I can get better at this because I hate looking at it!

Excellent... I always enjoy your posts. I consider myself and people comment I am the opposite of messy. Choose your own word. Moving forward I just entered a relationship and one of the first things I expressed were my ideas and feelings around messy environments. No bueno, I am patient yet vigilant!

I really enjoy your videos, you inspire in a very gentle way! I am a naturally scattered mess type person, but I’ve been working on getting things in order for several months now. I’m not sure if I’ll go towards true minimalism, but I’m definitely trying to downsize and be more mindful about the things I keep and allow in my space. Doing small steps is helping! Thank you for your kind encouragement!

I am a messy person, but nowadays just a bit messy. What helped me a lot in getting a better and healthier attitude was one RU-vidr in particular. Cas from Clutterbug brought to me the realisation, that open shelves and baskets with similar items grouped together isn't just 'the lazy person's way to get things out of sight', but a valid way of organizing if done properly. I have Ikea Ivar shelving in every room of my flat except for the bathroom (too narrow). I use baskets and containers to hold my clothes, pantry items, crafts, different bathroom stuff, etc. I wish someone would have told me this was a valid option (instead of towers of clothes in a wardrobe, always toppling over) twenty years ago. It would have helped me feel less messy and overwhelmed, which definitely would have helped me with how I saw myself for years/decades. Although I don't plan on becoming a minimalist, I feel the positive effects of living more minimalistic than before. Erica Lucas calls it 'Minimalish', which I like. Next step: getting rid of the four baskets of sell/give away items, so my mind is a bit more at ease and my compartment in the attic is bright and airy again 🧚‍♀️

I read or heard somewhere to keep my table set to avoid it being a dumping ground. I had placemats & cloth napkins. I did that for a long time and it worked but think I got away from it during the holidays. Now I don't want to put anything on my table when I have a vase of fresh wildflowers from my yard in the middle of the table. It's been a battle for me to keep the futon in my office from being a dumping ground but knowing I have to sleep on it when Dad comes next week is helping. I just need a more long term way to avoid it.
@RonaldLBanks

Take a moment to observe your habits and why those places tend to be key dumping grounds for you Lynne. We might have to make a few adjustments in the way we do things day to day. Just something to think about. Keep growing and learning on your journey!

Agree with all the points made in this video! For the longest time, before I managed to declutter my 2nd bedroom, my biggest obstacle was perfectionism. My clutter was organized, but I had A LOT of things that I wasn't using. The amount of stuff was what had overwhelmed me. I had this notion that I had to declutter everything in one swoop. It ended up delaying my decluttering process since I had struggled with overthinking "how to do it" instead of the why. Why do I want to declutter this room and the benefits of not having so much junk. It's really that shift of mindset of starting small and focusing on the small wins to help with the overwhelm or just to start. Although I've successfully decluttered my 2nd bedroom, this video just reminded me that smalls win help build momentum also applies in other areas I'm working on in my life.

If something doesn't fit your current life or where you want to be in the future, then you need to assess it and let it go. I've done this with clothes, physical items, and people.

I am a messy person with a messy family too! We have been decluttering for a few years and it seems like we have our environment at a manageable level now. We have a spot in the living room to put things that we are ready to donate and we take that in every week or two before it gets redistributed throughout the house. We have developed a bunch of new habits, like weekly room cleaning and organizing- the people with less stuff love that it goes very quickly now!

Absolutely fabulous! This is one of the simplest and most concise videos on decluttering I have seen. I am passing this on to both of my ADHD kids who are young adults on their own now (they seem to have forgotten some basic routines). You take the anxiety out of some of the basic maintenance in life in this video. Bravo! You have a new subscriber. This is excellent. I'm now going to spend some time checking out the rest of your channel. Grateful Mum.

I woke up to all the clothes I had scattered over my bed. Some are my husband's. Some were mine. This is definitely a hot spot for collecting things and also the bed is a hard thing to get rid of to prevent this problem. But it has helped in other areas. I have decided not to get any other storage type things - shelving, and I have no bedstand end tables. I have to fix my need to dump things on surfaces first. I got inspired by watching this and just put all the others away. I procrastinate because I have too many articles for my space and am always rotating hangers, drawer space, folding techniques with each round of laundry. I like the idea of a catch all as you live. I am going to start making weekly runs to clear it out as well.
@RonaldLBanks
@RonaldLBanks 3 года назад
I definitely feel like the catch all technique would help you Tanguera! It’s a great way to start building that momentum around clearing the visual mess and then dealing with it one basket at a time rather then looking at the whole room! Keep growing! If I can help in any way let me know!

I know I have to work on my mindset... I'm attached to everything for the wrong reasons! (Could use later, spent too much on it, want to use it in the future but it's just a fantasy...) and I have certain areas that collect stuff like crazy. I can't get rid of the floor though, so maybe the catch-all basket is a solution for that... Thanks for the Video. It had been a while since I watched your Vids. :)
