2-stroke SNOWMOBILE ENGINE surprised everyone! Ultimate Racebike BUILT IN A BASEMENT... 

I raced with Rob during his WERA years back in the 80’s, while he was teaching at PENN State. He raced several of my two stroke bikes back then including my TZ750. A good lad and incredibly brilliant engineering mind… Truly the wonder years….

An 800cc two-stroke engine in a motorcycle is positively demonic. I can't even begin to imagine what riding such a machine would be like. Truly a work of (diabolical) art.

It was great to see the Tul-aris again, I was fortunate to meet Rob when he lived in Minneapolis. I helped out with the Tul-da, on occasion, in the paddock at Brainerd International Raceway in Northern Minnesota (at the time he was collecting data on a new pressurized airbox, handmade in carbon fiber). I also worked at Professional Instruments Company where the transmission plates and other Tul-aris parts were machined by my friend Tim Wirtz. Rob is a great guy, willing to share his knowledge. I still have some of his notes, scribbled in the margins of a local newspaper, on how to improve the geometry of my old cb550 café racer!

My Polaris 700cc Twin has 120hp . Snowmobile motors are awesome power plants.

I am often quite jealous of people who have had an easy start in life and thus seem to have been preprogrammed for succes. This guy seems to have made the best of it all and is deserving of his succes. What a guy!

I met Rob about 20 years ago when I was working at Professional Instruments company (Hopkins MN). Another guy I worked with was helping him build the bike in Robs basement.

Clever stuff! Similar concept to the KÖNIG 500 GP built by New Zealander Kim Newcombe in his garage. The bike used a marine outboard engine and put up a good fight against the big boys in GP racing back in the 70's.

That engine clutch transmission frame (if you can call it a frame) and exhaust system absolutely mind-blowing!

I remember Rob from his WERA days and what an awesome Norton he had. I remember inside of his van one wall of the van was a peg board with dozens of gears. which after every race he would putting new gears on the Norton between races. And just a real down to earth guy. Really happy to see him to become so successful!

A man named Ted Wilkins built a hill climbing bike out of an old triumph motorcycle and a 540 rotax ski-doo motor and scared all the big boys..# MC Access 1991 devils stair case.....in 1995 he had built a crotch rocket from scratch using a 540 rotax ski-doo motor...carbon fiber and aluminum components..the motor was the frame" he was from Markham Ontario Canada look him up!

Was so glad to see this, specially since it involved Fernando Alonso and Renault

I was very lucky to see this bike on the track. They would run some asra and ccs races. We all knew it was a special bike back then.

An 800cc 2 stroke would have been an absolute handful when it hit it's powerband.

The eccentric adjustment looks exactly like the Benelli chain adjuster. It’s a great idea. Wonder which came first? This guy is a visionary and that motorcycle is just a missile! 👍🏻

I had almost forgotten about this bike. A bit of a stretch to say built in his basement, assembled is what I would say. The bike was so cool to see back then and many hoped that Polaris would start building them. The bike would still be competitive today de stroked/bored to meet 750cc class. With how good the teck he was using back then it's even better now, the transmission could be geared much better than off the shelf Ducati parts. I spent 2 hour's in person drooling over this bike as a 18yr old kid., wondering how he came up with every detail of the bike. Bikes that had eccentric chain adjusters alone made no scene to me, as the rake of the bike changes with each adjustment, the swing arm pivot has to change at the same time, he solved that. He set the bar quite a bit higher and everyone noticed bikes got much better quickly because of him and his 1 off bikes. I could wright a book about all the things he did that slowly came to be on many bikes, how motors got forward leaning cylinders to keep thrust angles more in line . He was crazy smart wonder if he is still alive?

Awesome bike! Seen a guy in the 90's that had a hill climb bike with a rotax i think 540cc? Snowmobile engine on it. He won every race.

This can be done again, 2 strokes are unmatched in power to weight. Currently, i doubt youd even be allowed to enter a race series with a 2 stroke. if they werent shunned so completely by governments and manufacturers, im confident a genius of today could build something similar if he had the desire.

The rear suspension setup is sweet.

It is now 2023 and I'm building a bike just like his with a 2019 skidoo 850 summit engine. Crazy to hear his story. I grew up in this Era at polaris. 21 miles from my house!! I have alot of experience with the engine he put in that bike. But I chose the skidoo 850 because it's alot more advanced than a polaris engine. Debatable sure, but that's my opinion. I like their direction injection more than polaris fuels injection.

It would great to have a street legal version of those bikes. I purchased a Yamaha RZ500 new in 1985 and still have it. It's in near mint condition.

The telescopic fork has an axle and two aluminium tubes as unsprung weight, the usd fork has an axle and two steel pistins as unsprung weight. The usd fork has greater rigidity which is why it is used these days but the unsprung weight of the telescopic fork is hard to beat.

Back in the late '80s/ early '90s, there were a couple of guys brought a snowmobile powered bike up to Sportbike Rally in Parry Sound, Ontario. Fast and light, but they retained the CVT tranny, and couldn't get it to work well for a motorcycle application.

Sounds like he followed in the footsteps of the Kiwi - Kim Newcomb. He first did this with an Konieg outboard motor engine and was competing with the likes of Phil Reid and Agostini.

SLP built my 700 Liberty snowmobile motor , 150 plus hp on 91 octane , so I’m sure a big bore 800 performance edition motor on race fuel would be close 190 hp , PSI used to built 190 hp twins from liberty motors

Snowmobile engines are no friggin joke. Anyone who has ridden a high performance two stroke snowmobile knows that. They don't use power valves as they aren't needed in a snowmobile with a CVT. It must be like getting rear ended by a bus when that 800 gets on the pipe with some good throttle behind it. With no modern electronics and that sharp power hit, that bike sounds like a potential highside into orbit. Rider beware, throttle control and respect are obviously required 😆

ha, for some reason i always thought the Tul-aris was a CVT driven bike, turns out it does have gears. I guess predictability is good thing when that thing gets in the powerband

12:09 on ptw yes its still at the very best but what this doesnt show is usability. Thats where bikes (and cars) have really come on. I race 2 strokes & have 5 of them but a 4 stroke is far easier when its big power like this to put down

Very well researched. The typical thing is that your video’s seem to fill in almost all the blanks in the magazine articles of the time. This particular machine was presented more like a crazy loner engineers dream. Here it becomes clear that the project was actually imbedded in a large companies promotional efforts and made use of it’s engineering facilities. Which explains a lot in retrospect. I always say I still buy printed magazines because they tend to go deeper into the details and backgrounds. Here the opposite is true. The printed magazines nowadays seem to be very much made by vague hipster types or oldtimers complaining about how much better the good old times where. Your video’s still ooze a sense of enthousiasm. Great new channel! Please keep it up! 👍👍

Seems like a clever and practical chap. He started an AI company which makes CAE simulation work faster and more efficient. Sounds like a more society-useful application of AI than (say) annoying chatbots.

I still think the Britten is the better all round bike. Britten looks better and every thing was made from the ground up including the motor. All this done with out computer technology as well. in saying this the TUL-ARIS is still a fine bit of engineering.

Concept of this bike looks really uncompromising - simply fantastic. The gearbox housing side panels seem to be the most massive parts of the whole bike. In my eyes this bike is no beauty - but of course this doesn't matter. 🤓

FYI, i watched a vid with the Ducati superleggera dyno to the real wheel 195hp and weighed 400lbs / 181.4 kg's They are known for exaggerating these numbers. This would very much validate your video showing this bike actually does posses a greater power to weight ratio.

To be fair, the NSR 500 V was, as the name suggest, 500 cc. A beautiful machine nonetheless.
