Hi Gabby. My money's on AI harvesting. I nearly got caught out last year when I was contacted via LinkedIn by someone who claimed to be representing a Corporate Training Academy, Got as far as the 2nd interview (only 2 days after the initial contact!), where they asked me to record a sample of a training course, then give them access to my file share so they could review it! That's when I smelled a rat, so I ran. Looking back now, I think they wanted voice samples to generate AI voices for who knows what other purposes!
I can't really describe what my problem is with AI companies, but I do know it gives me an ugly feeling inside when I hear about things such as voice cloning or chat robots for fake conversations. It's most clearly wrong in my eyes when it's stealing people's time and energy.
The “company sponsored equipment” would have basically been their endgame here. They send you a cheque for you to go buy the equipment and they send too much so you send back the remainder… the scam doesn’t need you to do any recording for them but you do find yourself back at the fake cheque scam you mentioned. I am curious about the human you spoke to, though. If they didn’t speak with a strong foreign accent then you might have some local scammers which are more likely to be of interest to local authorities. There are some great RU-vidrs who specialise in this sort of thing if you ever want an epic crossover some time.
3:10 "Company Sponsored 'Equipment's'-" is a dead givaway; The word "Equipments" is not plural and even if it was, the apostrophe also screams out "SCAMMMMMM!!"...
Yeah I've heard of scams where the overpayment involves special equipment. I also don't know if it has to be limited to one type of scam. Why not do an overpayment scam with a script that's also good for generating AI?
Thanks, Gab. Can't tell if this is a standard day job scam template poorly adapted to target VOs, or if the spec is intentionally odd to weed out pros who know better
Love you for this! I had a company ask me to record The Great Gatsby for, well, a massive amount of I’m honest. Told the I was English and they said there fine. Anyway, quick google and it turns out they are an AI company. Well, that stopped then.
I love how she mocks the "apparently I passed test number one in their search for talent" lol. Like, bish, I AM the test for talent. I'm Gabby Fking Nistico lol
