Thx for posting. I’m 2 weeks post labral tear & rotator cuff repairs. I do neck stretches to avoid headaches. I don’t wear the sling unless I’m out-& that’s rare. I began PT 6 days post surgery. The pain is tough, you’re so right. I’ve been wearing tube tops-dressing from the bottom up & yes, wearing ponchos is a must. Thx again.

I am at day 4 post op. So far, its the worst thing i have ever volunteered to do to my body, and i have had 5 other surgeries in my life. My advice, is to make sure you need this, and then be prepared for a lot of pain the first week, followed by months of rehab.

2weeks out but I stupidly used my arm to scoot myself(the excruciating pain was immediate) and I know the pain I'm in is because of this.

I just found your video & although it is a 3 yr old video your comments are right on the mark for me. I’m s/p 4 weeks post right (dominant) rotator shoulder repair w/ bone graft placement. Because the bone graft takes a full 6 weeks to properly heal, no PT until after 6 weeks hopefully. Everything is a challenge & being a totally independent 83 yr old female, it’s hard for me to ask family to help. I’m less depressed, more independent & yesterday I was able to do a bed linen change using my left arm, eating is more challenging. Unable to sleep in a recliner as handle to lower feet is on the right. No pain meds, only Tylenol PM at bedtime, sleeping still not great. Recommend ice machine daily. And yes, miss being able to drive. Enjoyed your video, thanks.

@@funmakingmoneyify 8 weeks post op & starting PT 2X/week. First time driving & definitely noticed using my right hand on the steering wheel at the 1 o’clock position is tiring as you had mentioned in a previous video. So good to be getting back to some independence. Little things like dressing taking more time to complete, even trying to put earrings in my ears can be a challenge.

Donna, I found your video's upon searching for sites regarding rotator cuff surgery. I feel better having my brother as a coach.He had same surgery. He used same surgeon for his rotator cuff surgery. I also used same surgeon who performed my hip replacement surgery. I dont look forward to the surgery, but between you and my brother will help in recovery. My physical therapist is 1/4 mile from home . We live in very small town.My wife will assist also.

Thanks for the video! 16 days post surgery. Had a appointment for rehab schedule and they checked my range of motion. Top anchor and clavicle bone they removed was painful. Rehab starts in 2 weeks. Pain is the worst back behind my right ear in the neck area going across my lat muscle. Hopefully it goes away and now the only reason I'm taking Tylenol. Right shoulder repair the same as yours. Right bicep tendon detachment is the main reason for my surgery. Hopefully you are totally healed by now. Take care.

Great to hear your totally healed! I just now found the problem was the arm i was supposed to hang down and move. I really didn't get all the information that I needed to begin with. Maybe they told me the information after surgery, but I was out of it. Started rehab yesterday, 4 weeks after surgery. Need to do the work to recover properly. Guy at work had the identical surgery and he goes bowling. Hope I get the same results. Thanks!

Thank you so much Donna. My surgery on the left shoulder is in 10 days I ♥ your ice tip. I had my pre op appointment yesterday, and they gave me the Polar ice machine. Watching how to use it was very helpful. I am using a hand gripper to strengthen my right hand. I have nothing to lose. BTW I am a 78 year old female, and was an active runner, but now I am dealing with a balance problem, which has affected my mobility. This is what bothers me, more than the recovery.

Hello, I had 16mm full thickness superspunatus tear, I can't sleep 20 minute's! Its day 8, I have the CPM chair 6 hrs a day. It is the only thing that helps pain. Once I'm still, I'm in "HELL" after awhile. I can walk outside, eat, even watch TV and the pain isn't much. But completely still, sleeping, kills! Hits hard.. radiates from scapula around the side of arm up to the ac joint. Other times it bangs on the superspunatus repair... also on the 2 incisions front/ back. Can you or anyone relate? See my RU-vid channel I have videos just showing my post-op experience

You have been a lifesaver and I have been so appreciative of having your videos as a resource, because you truly "get it"! Everything you describe is exactly what I'm going through and how I have been feeling....the emotional roller coaster, the grumpiness and frustration. I am on Day 11 and I see my surgeon for my post op visit later today. I actually tore BOTH rotator cuffs (tripped over a raised grate in the middle of the sidewalk and fell forward), so I'm potentially looking at a 2nd surgery, although I'm trying not to worry about that too much at the moment. My main "issue" right now is not being able to get a good night's sleep, even in the power lift recliner. Consequently I'm tired and lethargic during the day and feeling in a very negative frame of mind. Hopefully it will get better! Thanks for the spot on words!

Hi, Donna. You really messed up your shoulder. So glad you have completely healed. Your videos are an inspiration to me. I fell on the ice a year ago and sprained my shoulder then reinjured it doing yard work in the fall. I am now on day 10 of my recovery. I had two tears ... the superspinatous (sp?) and one other (can't remember what the doc said) but it wasn't as bad as he thought. I was off the pain meds in 36 hours and only taking Tylenol as needed (if at all). No pain to complain about. Used the ice machine solid the first two days. It was one that had some kind of fluid in it that cooled the cuff and only needed to be topped off with a capful of water every day and I could leave it on all the time (as long as I was stationery). I didn't feel like the cuff fit properly but my arm was still numb the first night, It must have worked as I had no swelling. The last few days I've been irritated by the sling ... doesn't hurt but I sure feel better after taking it off for my exercises (I am supposed to bend my arm at the elbow ... didn't damage the muscle like you did) and putting it back on. When the sling is off, I have some aches in my upper arm above the elbow and below the underarm. My next appointment is in 4 days. No spasms yet but it is just enough extra weight on one side to throw your posture off ... like carrying a baby. I've been able to cook simple meals, fill the dishwasher and do laundry. Not being able to drive sucks. I realized a week before the surgery that with it being my right arm, there is no way driving is going to happen anytime soon. I got my hair cut short the week before the surgery so it would be easier to manage. I figured out make-up, too. Where there is a will, there is a way. Just ordered my second poncho. Thanks for that find! I started watching your videos in December and prepared everything ahead of time and started practicing I have recommended your videos to my doctor when he scoffed at me watching You Tube. I thought I would write up a list of things to do in preparation for a hand-out to his patients. Your videos will be at the top of the list! Thanks again for your positive attitude and support. Liz

Liz, it sounds like you are doing great! Isn't it funny how closed minded some of the doctors are! They assume that we are watching things that give misinformation when actually many are quite helpful! Much more helpful than the lack of information they are providing! I'll be interested in knowing if this doctor uses your handout!

@@funmakingmoneyify I'm approaching 7 weeks post op now. I started PT at 3 weeks doing passive exercises. Last Monday I shed the sling and started with new exercises - pulleys, walking up the wall, etc. By Tuesday there was a world of difference in my mobility. I drove for the first time and am driving to my PT appointments and to the store now. Thursday my arm, wrist, elbow, everything hurt. I'm a little better today. Guess the exercises are working. I did give my prep list to both my doctor and my therapist. Both are interested and I think it will at least be posted on their website if not used as a hand out. I am going to publish it on an electronic publication site later this week and will send you a link if you would like to share with your audience. I'm going in to work for 3-4 hours a week but won't return in full capacity until I can lift things and feel more comfortable driving. My therapist is pleased with my range of motion. He says I'm a week or two ahead. He keeps adding and changing exercises every day or two. I can touch the back of my neck but not the top of my head yet. Make-up and other things get easier with each day. Liz

Floor. I didn't have physical issues of dropping down and getting up. That could be an issue for some. I slept in it for five months before surgery because lying prone was painful. I then slept in it about 3/4 months after surgery, using pillows to pro up and immobilize my shoulders. The first two months I slept with a polar ice machine. My spouse tucked me in with all of this 😊 until I no longer needed the ice wrap.

I’m so happy to find your video. I’m 16 days postop right rotator cuff surgery. I had a large cuff tear as well as a labral tear. They want me in the sling/immobilizer thing for 6 weeks total. It looks like we have the same sling/immobilizer. Mine says Top Shelf Universal. I had searched for a video on it to see how it was supposed to go on, because after I removed it the first time, I wasn’t sure I had it back on the right way. I only found videos of other styles. I like the ice machine, but wish it could keep the water cold by itself instead of me having to constantly fill it with ice and water. Did they send you a passive motion chair before your active therapy? If so, about how large is it?
@funmakingmoneyify
@funmakingmoneyify 6 лет назад
Use water bottles and freeze them so you don't have to replace the ice as often. I did not have a passive motion chair. I wish I could tell you about the sling because it is very important that it fits correctly. I saw the surgeon at 2 weeks post op, and then saw his PA at my 4 week visit. It was at that 4 week visit where the PA actually looked at the sling and said it was fitting wrong and way too loose! And that was contributing to me having a lot of neck spasms.

Donna, thank you so much for sharing your story. I just hit week two and I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos because they give me some perspective and you have some great tips. Much appreciated and I'm looking forward to week three and beyond! This isn't my first rodeo on on the surgery front as I had a terrible ruptured patellar tendon injury four years ago that led to major surgery and a pretty brutal 12 month recovery because part of my injury included the tendon ripping off part of the bone as well. On the shoulder front, I had a full tear of two different rotator cuff tendons and all kinds of issues with my bicep muscle. All of this led to seven different arthroscopic holes and a major "open" incision in the bicep muscle area. Yuck! Onward and upward and thanks again for documenting these videos. So far, I feel like our stories are matching each other almost perfectly, which gives me some comfort and hope!

Hi Donna, thank you so much for your videos - they have been so helpful to me . I am two weeks post surgery, large tear on the supraspinatus and impingement of the acromion onto the biceps tendon. So the orthopedist had to cut four holes in my shoulder, not two, He repaired the supraspinatus rotator cuff tendon, and then he shaved off bone from the bottom of the acromion "hook". I am a teacher, and unfortunately all of this was the result of a tall, very fit student who decided to run backward, very fast, down a school hallway, ramming me back-to-back and pitching me headfirst into a cinderblock wall (the shoulder), and into the edge of a door (my right index finger, the back of my head, and the trapezius muscle at the top of my shoulder). This happened this past Valentine's Day, February 14! What a Valentine's Day gift. So here I am after surgery, and I have to say you are right that the first week is the worst. I started to feel a whole lot better as week 2 progressed, and I found I could do more and more things. I experienced those muscle spasms too - I got them at night just as I was drifting off to sleep. Different muscles all over my body would jerk me awake! I forgot to ask the doctor about that. My doctor gave me a nerve block before surgery, but guess what, it didn't work. It blocked all of the nerves down the neck, but it didn't reach the end of the shoulder, the arm, or the fingers. I woke up and the pain was pretty bad. We didn't have any pain medication because the doctor expected the nerve block to work! When we got home I took Percocet, but to be honest I don't do well on these pain meds. The next day I continued to take it but I missed a step as I was going down the basement stairs and fell onto my knee and the elbow of the operated arm. Of course I had my sling on, and it turned out that I didn't do any damage to the operated shoulder. Horrible experience, though. I stopped those pain meds. The doctor's instructions said to be careful going up and down stairs - take heed, everyone! Those pain pills affect different people differently, I guess, and they're just too much for me. I was fine with using ice on the shoulder with an occasional Tylenol or Advil. I found the pain to be manageable. I also found that if I tried to do too many things around the house that my shoulder would ache and hurt. I found out you have to take it easy. Thanks again, Donna - your suggestions were very helpful for preparing for surgery! I use lavender essential oil now too - it's soothing.

Very worried, will find out Monday if I have to have surgery. My husband passed away in Sept. and I am 66 and live by myself. I sometimes wish it had been me ...wrong person died. Can I do this by myself? My son is a truck driver so he's gone a lot...just started this job and my daughter-in-law has an almost 3 month old and even though they live next door, I don't get good vibes from them. Hubby and I had/have 14 kittes and 2 inside dogs...they object. He would be very upset if he knew that they want me to give most of them away. You just cannot do that. I am extremely upset about the possibility of surgery. I just pray I don't have to have it. To say that I am worried is an understatement. But, surgery...can I recover without outside help?

Tedvirgeliz19 my surgery went well on 1/24. No major pain, but a lot of soreness. Surgeon installed three anchors in the humerus, shaved the base of the clavicle bones, cleaned up the tendons, and repaired the bicep. PT is going well. Slow and steady. Had a reaction to either the suture material or tape adhesive, as the incisions got very red and raised. On an antibiotic just in case. Seems to be getting better. Using the Breg Kodiak ice therapy machine. Works great! Something that has been very helpful is a shirt from slingshirt.com. There are left and right shoulder versions that secure the shoulder and side seem with magnets. Perfect for PT and doctor visits. A bit pricey, but super convenient. I’m two weeks post-op, and haven’t used much pain meds; maybe 15 pills. Overall, better than I expected. PT is a must, as you don’t want to develop frozen shoulder. Doing my home exercises. Still can’t use the arm for much. Just started arm curls with a 1 lb weight. How are you doing? To others considering the surgery, the anxiety is worse than the surgery itself. If you’ve been putting it off, just do it and get out of pain!

NJBeachbum12 thanks for up date. 1lb weights and curls-super! My 1st post op appt is in 3 days. Only PT thus far is 20 fist tightening per hour. Surgery pain bad for one week even ON meds. Bicep repair is most painful. I sound like a baby! No medical report yet on extent of damage/repair. Slow but steady progress is my goal. Is going back to work an issue for you?

Hi Donna, your videos are by far the best thing I’ve found, and absolutely invaluable! Thank you so much. I just wish I’d found them before the operation! I had rotator cuff surgery two days ago and so it’s early days (and obviously pretty painful at the moment) but you give me such hope that I will eventually return to normal. Can you give any bra advice at all please? I’m in the UK and there isn’t much available that I think will be suitable. Also, when did you go on holiday for the first time? We are due to go to Cape Town in three and a half weeks. Pre-op, my surgeon said it wasn’t a problem, but I am obviously a little concerned as it’s such a long way! So sorry to hear you damaged your wrist, and hope you are doing well at the moment. Diane

The best anti inflammatory cream on the market is Penetrex. Read reviews. Much better then lavender which I do own. I own a ton of creams including biofreeze, icy hot, etc. Penetrex is natural too and does have arnica but also has more natural anti inflammtories. Blue emu is okay too but Penetrex works better. I've had two disks replaced in my neck so I'm not looking forward to this surgery. I already suffer some pain in my neck, arthritis type pain and spasms each day however it's milder then it used to be and the pain is so much better then it was prior to surgery.

10-12-20: RC surgery done on 9-29-20. Comparing my recovery to yours here. ANd plan/hope to do so at the progress point-periods that you have chosen. I went in for bone spur shaving and ended up having a "massive" (Dr's term) cuff tear repaired. I'm pretty sure I repeatedly tore it beginning 10 months back by awkwardly by operating my Miata top with one arm. I am a 65yo, 28yr high level tennis player in very good health. I put up with the pain by by periodic steroid injections to the joint, as an earlier MRI did not, for some reason, reveal the tear. 1) Still on the pain meds on as-needed basis. 2) No spasms (yet), but I do have the same "back bar". 3) Same pendulum exercises. 4) No ice machine. 5) I'm up to 4 hrs in my bed now before I wake up achy and move tot the recliner! 6) Lite hiking in various state parks 2-3 miles (no Buffalo...always summer here in San Antonio) since day 6. P.S. Your a darling for having made these videos!!
