@@anonymousprofessor8866 ? How would using a lower than recommended Power brick, brick your t16 mini. No there's no alternative? Everything uses USB. Figure out what the recommended specs is, and buy a brick matching go exceeding the recommendation. If it doesn't get enough power it will just shut off. No bricking. It's just power, your not flashing a bios.

TurboGrafx16 mini is my favorite of all the mini systems, because it was an introduction to so many great games I never played before. Regarding the power brick, I just been using the one that came with my Sega genesis mini and it’s been working great.

I was that one kid in the neighborhood that had a TG16. Was an automatic buy for me simply for nostalgia. And I honestly still love mine, but am excited for the Analogue model to finally come out.

@@ozzie.l.6035 This is garbage. The Turbografx-16 was a failure but it had a ton of advertising. You could find it in any catalog along with the other systems. It had it's own section is stores that sold games. You could find kiosks running demos at Toys 'R Us. I was strongly tempted to pick one up when they were being liquidated. '94 or '95 maybe?

@@ozzie.l.6035 ya the torbografx16 didnt even exist intil the mini was released then they retconed it back to the 90s and avertised it as the turbagrafx 16 biggy its rly just a hollywood slight of hand so obvious with all the special fx in all the movies now a days i mean rly how often do u see realism effects with physical make up n costumes their all just digitally created in computers n we dont spot the difference acutely rly easy to do if you watch into level tutorials about abode photoshop on youtube even (that even has channels that use unreal fx to u just cant escape it anymore its just the way the world has been moving since the dotcom bubble and y2k

I hope Konami realizes that there are so many people that still want them. I'm sure the pandemic is to blame here. Until then, I've got my SNES Classic with the SD card mod and plenty on room for TG16 games but I will pre-order a TG16 mini as soon as it is put up, if ever

I paid 250 for mine yep thats kind of a ripoff esp. since I barely spend 50 bucks a year on videogames. Most of the games on the MINI I wanted were disappointing but the Japanese shooters made up for it

I imported my tg16 mini from amazon Japan when I heard us release was delayed a couple months. Came in great shape in a shipping box with bubble wrap and in 7 days. Thankfully I knew about powerbrick issue before hand and use one of MANY I own with correct ratings and have had no issues. Got a 8bitdo tg16 wireless and like it. But I prefer the wired one with the sliders

Same, but I used a cheap $1 Power brick, the kind you're likely to find in a place like Dollar Tree. And since I don't play mine frequently enough, the system and power supply are still good.

I remember that. I was on the fence about getting one but I read case after case about people not only having to buy one, but they seemed to fry the console?! Input lag too, right? Add to that scalpers buying them up and charging ridiculous prices, I passed on this.

Out of the minis, I love the Genesis and the Turbografx. I did know one kid that had the TG16. They only got it because the Nintendo was sold out and it was on sale and they already had a master system. So the parents didn’t want another SEGA. I loved the share with my neighbors because we had the Genesis (me), the SNES (my friend), and the Turbografx (my friends cousin that his parents also owned a video rental shop).

I'm happy I chose a good power supply. I had my mini for 3 years and played long ours and even bought a wireless control and everything works perfect! I do miss Legendary Axe, Keith Courage, Aero Blasters, Cybercore and Gate Of Thunder. Happy New Year! 🙂🙂🙂

I grabbed the PC-ENGINE mini last year since I knew it might be my last chance. Glad I did. I'm really happy with it. I remember how expensive the Turbo Graphx 16 was especially with the CD add on. I was always a huge fan of the color palette. Really happy with all the Konami titles especially Castlevania. Also the 16 bit version of the NES Ninja Gaiden port.

I wanted one and then the release date got all messed up with the pandemic. It’s so ridiculously expensive to get one it just forces you to run emulators instead. I never saw it at any retailer.

@@sharinglungs3226 Some people bought it, played it and sold it on. If you don't mind getting a tatty box or no box, it can be picked up maybe in 2nd hand stores. I got mine from cex for £75 last year. I'll probably never be in a position to pick up another one on the 2nd market again though for to them being pretty rare as it is.

I believe it has something to do with the system lacking a reset button. And also that the turbografx is a lot more niche than the snes and genesis were so there's less incentive.

The thing is, it has actually been hacked. The problem is it is tricky to do, requires hardware modding skills, and it is very easy to permanently brick it. Work to find an easier, safe solution that wouldn't result in tons of people frying their console went on for a while but I don't think anyone is still actively looking into it. The silver lining is the tg16 controller is great, and works well with emulators. Bonk without turbo switches is just wrong

I had no idea these were hard to find when they came out. I just remember seeing an update from this channel that they were in stock, then I ordered it. Mine at least came in a separate box and wasn't messed up at all. I just ended up using the Nintendo mini adapter for the power. Its 5V at 1.5 Amps, but works fine.

I got mine from a reseller on Ebay Australia for $250 and I'm glad I did as it came mint double boxed with a power supply. I was really looking forward to a hack because of the available internal space inside the unit...it is very hard drive friendly. In my opinion the best thing about the TG16 mini is how hard the games are...you get whooped time and time again...sort of refreshing when you have been playing games for 40+ years.😵‍💫

At that size the TG16 mini should've had a working HU-Card cartridge port. It's huge for a mini console.

I never had a TG16 back in the day, but the TG16 Mini is definitely my favorite of the mini consoles. It was done so well, and the having all the games for all the regions was so nice.

The coregrafx version was the ideal version. Smaller footprint and still has turbo switches. I ordered mine from Japan. I was hoping it would get hacked but like others have said I also have a retro pi so it's not a huge deal. And the 8bitdo wireless controller is still fantastic

The title screen is in dark mode as well on the Coregrafx version to suit the product. It can be changed in settings to the PC Engine colour scheme but is effectively a white screen backdrop burning the eyes out. Don't know if the Japanese version would have T16 and Coregrafx settings available? The size of the American TurboGrafx model mini case is bordering on ridiculous for what's inside.

I contacted Konami about the lack of power brick when the system was announced, I told them that you could not expect people to have one that supplies the right amount of power. They blew me off saying "Thank you for your concern, be we already looked into this."

I remember creating an Amazon Japan account just to order this. I believe it was your video that prompted me to do that. Mine came packaged nicely and worked great. It sucks so many people had these issues because the system is great.

You don't have to use the HORI plug. You just need make sure that whatever plug you use meets the specifications for the system. I found a cheap plug on eBay that works like a champ. As long as the plug is 5.0v, 2.0a, you should be good. Never had a problem with mine, and I love it. Btw, I actually have had 2 of the system itself. The first one I had got lost in pawn. But one of the ones I got was actually shipped in an outer box. The other one was shipped in a big envelope.. But, both of the boxes were actually ok.

If a relaunch does happen like Ron speculates at the end, (and he said "maybe," that is important) then I will end up buying just a usb controller from hori. I was waiting for a sale to occur (25usd was too much for essentially a wired controller with only a dpad and face buttons, turbo sliders or not) but I didn't think that this whole thing was limited so I ended up missing out and saw the things listed for much much higher prices from resellers.

The TG16 was never released in Australia, but I remember all the ads in EGM and other US magazines and was so envious that I could not get my hands on it. So was really happy to be able to get my hands on the TG16 mini a couple of years ago and finally experience this platform. No regrets. I think the TG16 is on par if not better than the mini SNES and Megadrive.

You can't over-amp a piece of electronics unless it is designed to over draw (flawed). Using a power supply with more amps on tap wouldnt damage a properly engineered piece of electronics. The fault goes to Konami on this one.

You'd figure a low amp plug would cause problems by browning out the system. Using a usb plug that provides a few meesy extra amps or milliamps speaks volumes about how bad the board was designed and I don't know if I want to touch one of these with a 10ft pole now that I've heard this.

Agreed. A 5 amp power supply with more than 2 amps would provide all it needs. Unless the equipment is faulty and his allowing itself to draw more amps than the 2 amps needed.

Yeah people get this wrong all the time. The voltage has to be right (shouldn't be higher or lower), but the device controls how much amperage it draws. The current (amp) rating on a power supply is the maximum amperage that can be safely drawn through it, usually because drawing more current than a supply is rated for will cause overheating and damage to the power supply. A good supply will also limit the current (amperage) drawn so it doesn't go beyond its design limits.

I had an OG tg16 as a kid (which is long gone) so this was a must buy. I went with Amazon Japan in April’20 as it was uncertain if Konami would actually bring it to the west. I’m so glad I jumped on that early and even then I almost had to go with the Core due to stock. It’s a shame about the power supply and that they didn’t design protection into the board. As for the system itself, I love it and am happy to have it along side the other minis. I remember when the initial hack video was released and honestly I don’t have any interest. I’m not going to risk bricking mine when I have other minis and other systems like a modded Wii to use.

What an adventure I had getting mine. So basically Amazon had these available for pre-order in 2019 for the 100 dollar price tag; I put my order in using my credit card. Then in about the middle of March of 2020, I look on my Amazon account and see that Amazon has cancellled my order and taken down the Turbografx 16 mini and deemed it "currently unavailable." So I immediately do some research via Google and see that iKonami (as well as all Asian video game manufacturers) had to close their factory and shipping operations due to COVID. "That sucks, but we're in a worldwide Pandemic; what can you do?' So anyway, a couple of months later I learn that it has indeed launched (and I see that this channel as well as some others had one); but neither Amazon had them nor any other retailer had them other than scalpers who were selling them on eBay at like 400 dollars a pop. Now, periodically for the next few months, gaming blogs and channels would note new supplies going up on Amazon, but when I'd check on Amazon....they'd be sold out! I only was able to get a new Turbografx 16 Mini console on eBay in late August 2020. I had to overpay...130 dollars, but at that point, I was dying to get my hands on one. So it comes, and while I really like it (despite the shortcomings including the ones you describe in this video), I looked on Amazon, and I finally saw new ones stocked for the original 100 dollar price tag.. sigh.

I have a smaller flat-screen TV with a USB port built in that I basically use for all my gaming systems. I always just plug the mini-consoles directly into that TV as a power source just to be on the safe side, especially after hearing about that specific TG-16 Mini brick issue. I haven’t had any problems using that method, although admittedly, after becoming a parent I haven’t had much time to fool around with any of them.

What a mess of a launch. Very interesting to hear about the power adapter issue. I had no idea something as simple as using the wrong adapter could brick the system. Still interested in picking one of these up as have just recently started exploring the PC Engine catalogue via emulation. I don't remember ever seeing the original systems on sale here in Ireland back in the day.

I was surprised they made a TG-16 mini. Where I grew up it was practically non-existent. My friends and I had NES's and 7800's and my dad had a C64 that I gamed on. TG-16 was just this odd "other" system we'd see a commercial for occasionally but they must not have made an impression because none of us seemed to even think of the fact that we could possibly have one if we wanted. And as for the Master System I don't think any of us even knew it existed.

This is my favorite of the mini consoles. I had a turbo as a kid and loved bonk and adventure island but my mom threw it out because the power cable was fraid and she was worried i would burn the house down.

Both of my PC Engine minis are effectively bricked due to the defective usb controller chips. The first was DOA, and the second worked for a few weeks before it encountered the same issue. I actually contacted Konami and Hori multiple times but both put the blame on the other and refused to help me. It didn't help that not only was the official power supply not included, but it was pretty much impossible to find. I was hoping an OTA hack might allow me to bypass the fried usb ports on the front of the system but it never happened.

I love my TG16 mini! Out of the 4 mini’s that I own (nes,snes,genesis), I play the TG16 the most. Very charming games, plus I really love space ship shooters.

This is the way to do it, if you have the means. Added bonus: the TG-16 core on MiSTer is virtually flawless at this point and clearly superior to whatever software emulator is being used on the TG-16 mini.

Thanks for telling me about the brick... I was just hooking it to usb ports or my phone bricks... I only played my mini a few times so everything's ok and I'll be cautious moving forward.

I bought this from Japan. As someone who owned a TG-16 and absolutely loved the system, it was nice to have this to finally reconnect with it. It just feels better to play it where the turbo sliders are responded to the right way and just having the pads with the sliders at all since it wasn't an option on USB previously. COVID really f'd up this release, delaying it and then altogether crushing the supply chain. I hope like hell this will get another release. That being said, I am super disappointed we never got a hack. I really only want to add like 10 more games to it because yes, the selected library for this release was stellar, but some of the missing games like Bloody Wolf, the Legendary Axe series, Devil's Crush, Bonk 3, Magical Chase, Keith Courage... these are pretty glaring omissions. Plus for myself who loves the NES classic, RBI Baseball, they have two of the best versions of that game on the PC Engine. I thought this was all being done by the folks who did the Genesis mini so I didn't think this was going to be a super complicated hack. That being said, hopefully your video drives people back towards completing it.

Have to correct you on the Turbo mini not being restocked on Amazon US - it was in fact restocked at least 3 times on Amazon US (that I know) during the first 6 months or so of release. During each restock they were available for a reasonable amount of time (at least for a couple days or so) I got one for myself with the original preorder and easily purchased a couple more later that I gave away as gifts to friends when they restocked. I only paid attention for the first 6 or 7 months of release, so their could’ve been more restocks even after that, but there was definitely a handful of them during the first half year of the initial release.

I thankfully got one during the 2nd restock and is still working to this day. I mainly just use my SNES Mini's brick to power on the TG16 mini and so far, it hasn't really short circuited. It does suck that there's literally no hack support for this mini.

It's funny I am looking up the TurboGrafx-16 mini. I never thought about buying it before. But now I would like to get one. But it's selling for way to much 200plus dollars. I don't mind the 100 dollar range for my collection of minis. It's sad to see how difficult this mini is to get. Guess I'll have to wait for a good price. Great video!

I guess I was lucky with mine. Nicely packaged, works great. Funny thing I placed the pre order with Amazon on day one, later on decided to cancel it but forgot to do it, many months later bam! I got the shipping confimation email, got my console and I'm glad I didn't cancel the pre order. While not perfect, the game selection is pretty good, hardware seems pretty robust. As per power supply goes, I use the brick that came included with the RetoUSB AVS.

I ordered the Core and PC-Engine from Japan. Received an email from Amazon that the tg-16 version was delay for 6 months. So I ordered 2 from Amazon japan. Everything was received well packaged and pretty fast. No damage to any boxes. I had the original console and the CD player, bought with my own money. Let's say I am a bit nostalgic about that console.

Not sure how widespread all the issues were, but I ordered mine shortly after the main hype, found it in stock on Amazon, at or really close to retail price, arrived no problems. Sticker on the bottom says 5v but does NOT show amps. But having some knowledge of small electronics assumed it needed at least 2a, so ran with that. Worked great and has been working ever since purchase. Never even knew about any of these issues! Admittedly though, 2 years and it likely only has like ~20 hours on it.

I have both PCE and TG, kind of dumb since I didn't realize you could switch to the other one in the lower left. Any hoo, I love both of them, they work perfect, give me the best of best games and with HDMI. Perfect in every way. Uhh, and as for power, devices only draw the current they need, so if you have a 3 amp PS, it's not going to burn anything up. I have plugged mine into all kinds of USB wall warts. As long as there are rated for the minimum required amps, you're good.

I have one. I got it when it came out. I think it's a dope mini console. Not coming with the plug was a stupid business move. NEC could have included the plug and charged the extra 12 bucks I spent on one. A lot of good games. I also bought the extra different colored controller. Both the original and white controller are awesome. Love the turbo switches.

It's really interesting listening to this. We all had nec and nintendo back in the day and we all knew one kid who got the sega. The only game he could show off was sonic, but we had smooth pc genjin and mario, so we just forgot about it. It's really interesting to hear another regional perspective. Edit: this was sold in shops here. Amazon had amazon units only, they came with cards or something. The ones in shops didn't.

How's this for a regional perspective, I grew up in the UK where no one had a NES or SNES. It was all about the ZX spectrum, Amstrad, Megadrive and Amiga. The SNES started to sell once Street Fighter 2 became a thing but usually it was neds that had a SNES and only that one game. PC Engine, TurboGrafx and SNES RPG's were practically unheard of for most of us back in the 90's. Makes you think eh?

Damn, I hate when collector items are not shipped properly to prevent damage. I didn't know that I was one of the lucky ones where I got mine shipped in a box with some bubble wrap. The only mini system I'm mad that I missed out on, was the C64 Maxi. I wish they would do another run of these, as well as the TG16 for those ppl that missed out on it. Plus the accessories.

I remember when GameStop was the only place you could buy it live but it sold out quick. May 1st 2022 got lucky through USA private sale on getting the mini version brand new. They packaged it like it was the HOLY GRAIL. Now gotta find the proper ac adaptor.

I'm a UK user of the Core Grafx mini and have been using an older ipad USB plug, it says 'Output 5.1V - 2.1A' on it, so I assume that is safe? On another note, here in the UK you can still get it on Amazon for about £100. I'm certainly glad I bought the multitap, official wired controller and 2 x 8bitdo controllers when I did as you just get get them now.

I have mine still in a box since my NES Classic was modded to play PCE games. I had no idea about the power issue. I would have used any USB power supply I had around. I'm glad I didn't.

I ordered in total 3 brand new PC Engine Minis from Amazon and eBay and each one had the dead controller port problem. I used my PCs USB port as the power source for the first one and a generic phone USB charger with the other two. I guess either the amperage was wrong and bricked the Mini's USB port or they had faulty USB ports to begin with.

i ordered mine with the extra controller and they sent me a core graphx i did buy the adapter so i never even knew about the power issue. glad i did. one thing that sucks though is it doesnt have the legendary axe games. i never had tg16. so i really wanted a definitive game list of the best games. as it sits now boxed up. im thinking about buying the polymega tg16 module and collecting games that way for the system.
