Released amidst a tumultuous period for the company, Sega’s Saturn console was designed to compete primarily with the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64. It would ultimately fail at both of those tasks, despite releasing quite a few excellent games. The Saturn may not have seen a true Sonic the Hedgehog game, which some feel didn’t help the console’s struggle to make a dent in the wake of Sega’s success with the Genesis, but it did get stone cold classics like the Virtua Fighter series, Daytona USA, entries from the Virtua Cop franchise, and the Panzer Dragoon titles.
As a matter of fact, if you’re looking for the best Sega Saturn games released during the beleaguered system’s nonetheless impressive lifetime, you’ll find numerous titles that hold up beautifully even today. The Saturn wasn’t a success per se, but you could hardly call it a failure either judging from these games.

Not in Japan. This is still the only one console aside of PSX & PS2, who beat Nintendo in Japan.

Man... Out my crew, I was the first to get a Saturn and got the Playstation the day it came out.. Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Fighter 2 was so dope.. And Ridge Racer, Warhawk and Toshinden were so lit.. What a time

I only had a few games for my Saturn. Lent the console to a 'friend'... oops 😅 SFA2 is probably my favorite (absolutely amazing game), but I do have fond memories of the virtua cop and fighter games.

Eh as a Sega Saturn owner since 97 I can't agree with the "all times" claim on some of these.Some of these I own, or did own.There wasn't any Mortal Kombat games mentioned.Shooting games,that you can play using the lightgun(sold separately) No mention of Marvel Superheroes or Children of the Atom.Both badass fighting games.

Came here for Virtual ON, Sega Rally, NIGHTS and Guardian Heroes, still some of the best games I've ever played. Guardian Heroes is just so legendary and under-rated (STILL) - the branching story, deep roster, amazing arena mode, incredible combat....GOD. I need a remaster! Also - omg I had forgotten about Die Hard Arcade, that was an insanely fun and chunky feeling game. RIP Saturn... you were special. I miss all these games so much...

Alpha 2 still looks stunning after all of these years. Probably my favorite along with Dragon Force but like most people ive never playing Panzer Saga. Probably the most underrated system in the us because it was difficult to find many of the games.

I literally got to play panzer dragoon for the first time ever just last week and I was blown away with how fun it was!! Currently downloading Panzer dragoon saga!!! I always loved the house of the dead also!

I also just played the Saturn version of the first resident evil for the very first time today!! I plan on beating it! I now have the PS1 version, the PS1 dual shock version, the PS1 director cut and the version on the DS!! The only one I have left to beat on consoles is the Saturn game!! I like the way it looks and plays! Edit: Well I couldn't resist & went ahead & put the 90% Complete GameBoyColor Version of Resident Evil on my RG353V & New 3DS LL, and it is SO COOL!!!! Would have totally, totally wanted that game on my Game Boy color as a kid!!! And it would've been the game, we all bragged about how good it looked!!?!? Right next to alone in the dark, but I think resident evil books even better?

Nice list. Too bad you didn’t include any games from the 75% Japan only releases. So that list you have is only on 25% of the game library. Really good choices with that limitation.

I would add also some ,,Japan only'' games like Sakura Wars 1+2 (best selling Saturn games after Virtua Fighter 2), Super Robot Wars F, Grandia, SMT Devil Summoner, SMT Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, Langrisser 3, Shining Force 3 (all scenarios), Princess Crown, Cotton, Street Fighter 3 Alpha, Deep Fear and Dragon Force.

I think 🤔 I have half these games in my collection, don’t have Burning Rangers, Astal or PDS but I have Tomb Raider, Croc and Gex plus Virtua Cop 1 and 2 which are great party games next to BomberMan! Played GunGriffon awhile ago and it was Fun! Not necessarily knock your pants off but still worth checking out. 😉

Many great arcade games ported to Saturn console, such as Last Bronx, Fighting Vipers, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighters, HOTD, Daytona, Sega Rally, Die Hard Arcade, Virtual On, etc. That just plenty of reasons to get Saturn...

Blazing Dragons was an interesting game. Was a puzzle game, set in the middle of old English fairy tales. Every character you came across had their own challenges and mental issue that you had to solve in order to progress in the game.

Its unfortunate SEGA of Japan and America had so much contempt for one another which led to many poor business decisions being made all around. Wish SEGA never developed the 32X and focused on making the CD add-on better while also ensuring the Saturn was adequately equipped to be launched in all regions.

Also, you didn't talk about Japanese exclusive games, is that because you rank them lower or because you wanted a western only list ? Anyway, here's my list of favorites (like you did, without Japan game, otherwise my list would be different): Dragon Force Shining Force 3 Saturn Bomberman Burning Rangers Story Of Thor 2 (Legend of Oasis in US) Guardian Heroes Night into Dreams... Shining The Holy Ark Sonic R (yeah, i really this one too much ;) Panzer Dragoon Saga Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge (really prefere the Darkstalker series over SFA). Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei Daytona USA / D.USA CCE (i have a hard time to decide between the 2) Sega Rally Championship Virtua Fighter 2 DecAthlete (Athlete Kings in EU) Fighters Megamix Virtual On: Cyber Troopers Keio Flying Squadron 2 (US had Astal... EU had this one :p ) Tomb Raider (Really surprised that you didn't put this one...) Game that you spoke of that i would put in honorable mention : Astal, Magic Knight Rayearth, Die Hard Arcade, Resident Evil, Street Fighter Alpha 2 Other honorable Mention : Winter Heat, Alien Trilogy, Steep Slop Slider, Loaded, Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean, Last Bronx Missing Mega Man 8. Honestly, I've never been a fan of the license, so I haven't played it -> I can't say if it's really a must-have for Sat. Yoh, who would need an other post to speak of all the japanse game he love, such as : Astra Superstars, Princess Crown, Bulk Slash, Sakura Wars 1 & 2, Grandia, Noon, Dragon Master Silk...

The opening statement that the Saturn was designed to compete with the Playstation and N64 is a bit misleading. Sega began developing the Saturn over a year before Sony announced it was entering the console market, and 2 years before Nintendo announced the Nintendo (then Ultra) 64.

The whole Sega story is such a What IF? scenario. What if Sega of Japan had listened to Kalinske and not forced them to produce the 32X, that was the first major mistake they made. What if Sega of Japan hadn't forced them to move up the launch of the Saturn? So many bad decisions forced on the employees by then head of Sega, Hayao Nakayama. If he had just trusted Kalinske to handle the western side of the company instead of dictating to him how things would be done. Kalinske had proven he understood the western market by making the Genesis/Mega Drive the big success it was.

For the best games of the console these are not very impressive. Some are interesting though. I did like Shining Force 1 and 2 and since I speak Japanese I might wanna try part 3. But Im also interested in the Resident Evil version.

I'm convinced you haven't even played most of these games. Dragon Force the hardest rpg ever? It's easy especially after the first play through and broken to an extent. Still an amazing game though.

Sonic Racing games today are the best in the genre. The critics were right, Astal is trash. SF Alpha 2 (Gold) for the Saturn is the best SF game to date! Sega Rally is way overrated. It's not even worth playing. I think I need to give Burning Rangers another chance. Panzer Dragoon is a decent game, but Saga really isn't. There are so many better RPGs for Saturn.

You mean used to be the best on Sega Saturn but no longer is the Saturn the best console in fact the Saturn had problems like no vibration you lose all your saves when the battery dies then you need to start all over it was a nightmare there is just no point in playing in the Saturn every game you played you lose all your saves it was to impossible to beat panzer dragoon by the time you almost beat it the battery dies all your saves is gone I’ll never play on my Saturn ever again that’s what made the PlayStation so successful is there was a memory card the memory cartridge for the Saturn was a pain
