Hey guys! Today's video is one of my most frequently requested videos to make! I hope you like it. I love houseplant propagation & it brings me so much joy. It is so incredible that we are able to take a cutting from whatever plant & root it into its own established plant! I definitely prefer water propagation, but as you can see in the video in some instances I choose other methods of propagating plant varieties. It is so much fun to get more free plants from taking cuttings like this!

Annaliese Mits I literally took an empty glass baby food jar, filled it with water and stuck 3 small cuttings in it and it took off within a week. It’s been about 2 weeks and my roots are a good 2-2 1/2” long!!! I haven’t transferred it to soil yet. I’m gonna wait just a little bit longer. My plant wasn’t too healthy to begin with and I was really surprised it rooted as fast as it did. Happy propagating!!

My whale’s fin is putting out a little plant baby and I am more excited than I think is entirely necessary! I don’t usually have a lot of luck propagating cuttings, but now I think it might be because I haven’t been giving them enough light. I’ll see if more light helps next time! Thanks for doing this video, I loved the tips!
@bkrbkrl
@bkrbkrl 4 года назад
I have Whale Fin and I need to throw something out there that I learned. Leave the pup on the mother plant: It will grow bigger faster than if you hurry up and take it off small. I have a pup that I just removed that is the size of the mother plant that grew that way in one month. I have another pup I removed when it was four inches and here we are, three months later, and it is only just unfurling and is only half the size of the mother plant! All were kept and cared for the same, so the moral of my story is don't be in a hurry to propagate a pup off of a Whale Fin. Let them grow bigger/stronger first.
@candacetoms4927
@candacetoms4927 4 года назад
bkrbkrl thanks for the info! I definitely want this plant to do well. It had been on my wish list for a while and I really love it. My plan was to separate them when the mother plant needs to be repotted, but now I will wait and just let the pup grow as much as possible.

One of my favorite plants is ivy. I love the way it grows, but I prefer bushy ivy rather than long vining ivy so I have to prop them a lot. The easiest way I’ve found to prop ivy is in soil. I’ve tried water several times but for some reason it always rots. What I do is cut off a few sections. I want a ton on leaves on each piece so I can have a longer stem. First I pull off at least 3 lower leaves to have a nice clean stem then pop that into soil, then I water it and put it in a big clear ziploc bag. The pot in a bag way works really well for creeping fig too. I do pothos, syngonium, holiday cactus, zz plant, and dumb cane in water.

Wow, this is pretty long video for you! Thank you for sharing your knowledge... For hoyas, they do well in water rooting method, well most of them. Rather, you want to do water-rooting with finicky ones.... they do well but it just takes time! Some of mine took more than 1 month to even show a bump indicating roots coming out!

With smaller syngoniums that haven’t started vining yet I’ve realized that if you go down below the soil right at the base of the plant and cut it off where it appears to be a node it will root if you put it in water. :)

Hi Harli! I saw in another video of yours that for Scindapsus exotica you like to pot new cuttings into the original plant so it becomes fuller. I was looking through your videos to see how you do that and I ended up in this one. So one you stablish some roots in the new cutting (in soil) you plant it back into the original plant pot? I am always afraid that the new cuttings do not stand the spare watering of the mother plant. Thanks!

Can you please do a propagating video of a fiddle leaf fig tree and a time lapse of it

To answer your question about our favourite methods for propagating Peperomias, I propagate them mostly by leaf cuttings. It takes quite some patience, especially when you put the upper half of a leaf in soil, but it's also fun :-) Thanks for sharing your experiences :-))

How do you propagate a philodendron? Like a Brazil, or micans? Have you ever tried propagating in sphagnum moss? I've been propagating my Raven ZZ in sphagnum and it seems to be doing well! I'm seeing roots now! I gotta try to leave it alone though and not keep pulling it out of the moss haha.
@HarliG

Yes! I only recently tried sphagnum but they loooove it! Especially Hoya. I rooted a Raven in water & dang it took forever haha

Agleonema are not more popular here where I live because they are stupid expensive. Many houseplants now are ridiculously priced because of the online hype. What kills me is there ARE people out there paying. Bandwagons are expensive things to be jumping on. Harli, thanks for the info so we can make more of our own plants.

Do you encounter any problem with fungus gnats when propagating in those boxes?
@LifeLostSoul
@LifeLostSoul 4 года назад
I keep accidentally propagating my basil. I know keep hearing people say pothos is the earliest but basil is taking over my house. And I need to trim the big plant so it doesn't flower but then I have just all of the Basil. Like idk if I can make that much pesto.

Hi Harli I can't seem to find indoor fertilizer anywhere, can I use outdoor fertilizer or possibly make some myself?
@HarliG

IT depends on what kind of outdoor fertilizer or what you would use to make it yourself! I am sure it would work just fine though (:

Do you "cook" your soil before planting the cuttings? I've had nothing but problems with fungus gnats no matter how expensive the soil mix.
@chantelbyrd5549
@chantelbyrd5549 4 года назад
I was having same problem. I pour boiling h2o over my soil. I have also started making my own, coco coir, wormcasting, orchid bark, perlite, some charcoal, and sometimes sand. It all depends on what I'm potting up. I also now mix those mosquito bits into my soil. Has made a hige difference

I have plants propagating almost ready to pot! Three Pothos and a monstera. Do I use plastic pots or terra-cotta??
@Fdgeful
@Fdgeful 4 года назад
I prefer plastic since it doesn't dry out as much and since monstera likes it moist, definitely plastic. Pothos could go either way but I still prefer plastic inners for every plant I own.
@HarliG
@HarliG 4 года назад
I am a chronic over-waterer so I prefer terra cotta! It really comes down to your watering habits & the preference of the plant water-wise if that makes sense? Like, Calathea I prefer to keep in plastic to help hold moisture in for them, but succulents I prefer terra-cotta so there is better air circulation through the soil so it dries out & doesn't cause root rot!

Ok so have u had the mini variegated lipstick plant? I bought a big hanging basket at walmart..died in a week. The whole thing...then another recently at lowes. Same i couldnt keep it alive. The leaves were way too thin and the stems were even teeny tiny too so i tried to save a few cuttings and they wilted in a day. Wtf! Its one of the hardest types of lipstick ive seen yet. Let me know if you have had this kind before and any tips! Or anyone else for that matter!
