Humble and grateful as well, I met him before concerts and he always thanked the fans for coming to the show. Any fan who goes to their concerts would tell you the same.
Alex Webster is the reason I started playing bass. Cannibal Corpse was my first concert. I was 12 or 13, some how ended up in the front of the pit right in front of him through the show and was absolutely mesmerized. I decided that night I would be a bass player.
Cannibal Corpse are just the nicest dudes in the world and Alex is a total class act. Intelligent, humble, always has time for people. I exchanged a couple of emails with him once and he was just happy to give a detailed answer to my dumb, nerdy bass questions that he's probably answered a million times. Cannibal forever!
Such a great person. Met him once with my son he was such a guy you would tell your kids to look up to. Your a legend Alex Webster. There are still great people in this world
I’ve met Alex twice. He is a legit cool guy. Genuinely nice and easy to talk to. And the fact that he’s such a fan of the genre he contributes to makes him very likable.
I like that he always speaks in a positive way about other musicians and different kinds of music. To be a metalhead is not about hating on anything else but to respect everyone's opinion and taste even if it's not yours. He seems very natural and down to earth.
It’s amazing to see guys like Alex Webster, Paul Mazurkiewicz and the other members of Cannibal Corpse be so likable and polite, and then explode the crazy way they do on stage. Wow!
I love how people see cannibal album covers and hear their music and just presume they’re a bunch of cavemen but then you listen to Alex (especially), or Paul or George, really any of the guys (rob to a lesser degree 😆) and they are all very thoughtful and intelligent. Cannibal is a perfect example of playing the kind of music you want as an outlet.
I can't really think of anyone in extreme music that are jerks. Most metal heads are down to earth. You have a couple bad apples every once in a while.
I met him a few times when I was dating Paul and they are all really great guys. All very intelligent. Just don't get around George when he's watching his baseball. Holy shit. lol
I saw Cannibal Corpse in Ventura, California on the day of Alex Webster’s 50th birthday. (I soon realized he was born 2 months before my mom was.) That night I was right in front of him in the front row. Literally straight in front of him. I can just imagine him being my dad. He’s one of the chillest people I’ve ever met.
My band got to open for them for a weekend in two separate towns back in 96. We didn’t want to fanboy out them but it was Alex that approached us to meet us and shoot the shit. Great guy. Very humble and down to Earth dude.
So fucking humble, eventhough he is one of the best metal bass players of all time. So much consistency and hard work, grinding it out - and results show. To any bass player out there I recommend his instructional book, it has everything you need for metal and beyond, with recorded examples and backing tracks
Dont remember the year. I was seeing so many show those years (miss that time). It was in Vera (groningen, the netherlands). The support band cancelled so they played an super long set. One of the best metal shows ive seen!
Ah I saw the US tour, so the band/bands with Corpse may have been different most likely. I looked up shows and set lists, if I could take a stab at the date and year possibly April 25th, 2003? They played in Vera (Groningen) then. Not that the date is vital by any means, seeing them open with From Skin to Liquid was epic regardless.
I met Alex when Cannibal Corpse came through my town a couple of years ago. After the show he jumped down off the stage to greet the fans. He was happy to take a picture with me and kept saying thank you and I appreciate it. What a super nice guy.
Great interview! Alex is a big inspiration to me, he's an awesome bass player and composer! Thank you so much! Hope you don't mind me putting some timestamps here for future revisits of this video 50:37 - What one piece of gear, and this can be in a live situation or a studio situation, what is the one piece of gear you absolutely will not do your thing without? It's impossible for you to do what you do without THIS one thing 51:57 - Describe your proudest moment as a musician 54:23 - talking about "the slower - the heavier" songs of Cannibal Corpse 58:22 - If given the chance, what non-musical profession would you be interested in? 1:00:36 - Tell us about any musician or artist that you've either heard or come into contact with in your life, who you think is either underrecognized or maybe no one's ever heard of?
my deepest thanks and appreciation goes to him EXACTLY for the From Skin To Liquid piece. It's AMAZINGLY beautiful, cinematically epic, and anxiety and despair inducing at the same time.
Alex Webster is so articulate and a smart musician/writer I love how he explains things best way possible I also love the fact that he enjoys other forms of music! this interview is great! You both let each other speak without interrupting just perfect
It’s funny hearing a bass God talk about playing things that are attainable. Mans too humble. He created the Gold Standard for Bass in Death Metal, one that has yet to be reached in my opinion.
Alex was so nice that *he wore our band's t-shirt* in Moscow when we opened up for CC in 2007! I'm the guitarist of *MORTEM* ("The Russian Cannibal Corpse") and here's the story (timecodes+listen/download links in the description) of all my projects, including the narration about Mortem and how we were scheduled to tour over Europe with CC: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MrOtu_vEEpc.html
The classical music influence can definitely be heard in “She Was Asking Asking For It” - especially in his bass lines. Reminds me a bit of Beethoven or Smetana.
Alex acts like he isn’t one of the best bass players in the history of heavy music. “I’m still trying to figure out this 5-string thing in my lap.” Lmao Pretty sure you mastered the fuck outta that thing. If he wasn’t so consistently humble in every interview I’ve ever seen, I’d swear he’s saying stuff like that just to piss people off. It’s extremely rare to be that freakishly talented and somehow remain THAT humble.
All the guys in this band seem down to earth. I wish all guys in death metal and other extreme forms of metal were like this. Proud to be a fan since 1991. 19 March 2023
So far the only cannibal corpse shows I been to are the ones in the u.s. and mexico 🇲🇽 i can’t really afford to travel to other country’s just the states and Mexico since I know more people there but it’s always a blast when cannibal corpse plays you are definitely in for a show
Awesome how he mentioned Gene and very ironic how he mentioned that he might have been a teacher considering that Pete Helmkamp bass player of Angelcorpse is also a teacher.
Lately Ive gained so much respect for Webster. Hes very well spoken and laid back and an absolutely incredible bassist and musician. When i first saw his playing style of just "sawing" away with his fingers i was completely enamored.
I first heard CC in the mid 90's. The Bleeding was the first song of theirs that I heard and was blown away immediately but I was and still am drawn to Alex's bass lines in that damn song! Reminds me of Geezer Butler and Bootsy Collins rolled up into one! One of my favorite bass players!
