Family Freedom have you heard of terracyle, you can recycle a lot of the plastic wrappers or packaging that can't be conventionally recycled and would end up in land fill!

Hi Family Freedom, have you heard of ecobricks? It's where you fill a plastic bottle(this could be litter picked up from the street rather than bought) with all of your plastic wrappers and then reused as a building block! Check out the wasteaid.org page for more info. Have a fab day :-)

It's so lovely and inspiring to see a video that's not about a perfect 100% waste-free family because it's not realistic for all of us! My boyfriend and I have just moved into a new flat - we're both vegan and care about the environment very much, and these kinda videos make me realise that it's okay to not be waste-free but do what is right for us 😄✨My favourite zero-waste product at the moment is my soap bag, it's made from hessian (I think) - and you just pop a bar of soap in it, It laters really well and also exfoliates your skin! I'd love to see a more in-depth cleaning video about what you use etc 😄

I do all of these! Great list. Here are a couple zero waste tips: 1. Olive oil washing up soap bar: just like a bar for hand soap, a bar works for the washing up, too. One large bar lasts my household a year and doesn't coat much. To use, just rub the wet brush on the bar and wash up as normal. 2. Save your scrap paper which you'd recycle and cut into smaller rectangles; then use for note taking (supermarket list, errands list, taking phone messages, etc.). You won't have to buy notepads anymore. 3. Save old clothes nd linens which are too worn to wear or mend, and use for fabric scraps or cleaning rags. I've used old bags to make bean bags for play and cut up old sheets to clean or polish with. Or else scrap fabric can be a great way to learn/practice sewing (which js an invaluable skill). Whatever cannot be repurposed can be recycled, so look out for a fabric recycle drop off.

The bread wrapper you pulled out of the bin can actually be recycled, supermarkets such as Tesco & Asda do carrier bag recycling, you can also recycle frozen veg packets in there as well, as long as it stretches like a plastic carrier bag when you pull it, you can recycle it there 😊

It’s amazing how much product you can put in reusable bags! The sales people are always amazed! I’m like keep putting more stuff in there they’re not plastic bags that rip after only a few products! I have the ones that role up like flip and tumble so I always have one in my purse. You could use family cloth too! If I use it I only use it for pee. Saves a bunch of toilet paper and just pop them in the washing machine.

When I was on holiday in fuertaventura ( one of the canary islands) there was a shopping that made bags, bumbags, laptop cases and tablet cases out of washed up or broken boat sails and it's so cool. No two items are the same. I got one of the bumbags and I love it.

The best way to reduce packaging on grapes and other fruits it go to market stall as they are all open punnets and can be put into paper bags instead which are easier to recycle x

coming live but not live from germany. i absolutely love how you're sharing all this positivity. it seems like you've incorporated all these important changes into your life so seamlessly, it's amazing and i've already implemented a lot of these things, though i haven't found a solution for everything yet (e.g. the toilet paper... i've ordered bamboo toilet paper online before which was wrapped in paper but then there was still plastic in the box it was sent to me in...ugh) but every step counts and you're doing so much already, it's wonderful. much love to you from a fellow vegan

One of our local grocery stores has a program where they have a container where we can put any plastic bags we have in them, and the store recycles them in some way. So when my dad goes shopping there each week, he brings all of our plastic bags and gives them to the store.

I have a suggestion about the server who has a bit of a "habit block" and gets stuck cos they don't know what to do about handing you an unpackaged sausage roll, and this goes for anything like that really, put smaller containers in your car utensils kit so you can hand those over to them. And make it the same rule, no container, no treat.

Great rule, we'll have to try it 👌🙂

To deal with non recyclable plastics I make eco bricks which are plastics tightly packed in plastic bottles which organisations will take in and send to developing countries to build houses or use on local causes such as benches, it is a great way to know your plastic is being reused and not to wasted. Since doing this my waste bin is practically empty most of the time. 🌍🌿

It was awesome seeing you at the march, and one thing that took me back was that Bob remembered that I first met him in Kent when he was doing a talk at Maidstone Vegan Festival! It's a small thing, but it meant a lot! I also want to say that you three looked adorable at the march, and I have no idea where JoJo gets all his energy from, nor how you both keep up with him! Thank you once again and I wish you all the best for the future :)

We have started putting any non recyclable plastic waste, film from fruit and veg packs, frozen food bags etc in a plastic drinks bottle( 1 litre or bigger) to make an eco brick. You compress the plastic by pushing it hard down in the bottle with a piece of Dowling, wooden spoon or similar and it is amazing how much you can get in. When it is full you can donate them for building projects locally or use them yourself. The plastic is contained and therefore non polluting. Search eco bricks online for more info.

I really liked your bit about periods. It is a blessing. Women complain about them far too much. Right now whenever I feel cramps I actually get super happy. I have PCOS and right now I haven't ovulated in 4 months. Which is scary. When I do, and am a bit more regular I get SEVERE PMDD. Having regular periods is a blessing. And when I'm regular it's the greatest thing in the world.

I just got back from a festival in the UK. They don't sell any single use plastic on site and you are encouraged to not bring it in. There are lots of places around to fill up your bottle so water isn't an issue and if for some reason you didn't bring a bottle with you they sell metal bottles. None of the bars use single use plastic cups you can either pay an extra £1 to get a reusable one or reuse the one you already have/use your own from home, I bought one once and kept it the whole weekend, used it for multiple drinks and have now taken it home,and will nring it with me next year. Also when buying a hot drink/juice if you don't have your own cup the drink is an extra 50p but they are generally happy to put it in any cup you have. Little incentives to reuse and recycle. All plates are paper and all cutlery is wooden (kicking myself over leaving my ones at home) I'm pretty sure if you brought your own plate you got money off your food (sadly I don't have one I could take) The rubbish left over was minimal compared to other festivals I have been to. Also all the food is vegeterian lots being vegan and they only offered dairy free milk for teas and coffees.

This is amazing! Such simple change so great to see how easy it can be. Money saving as well as helping the planet 🙌🏻 How long does one razor blade last? I’ve been looking for environmentally friendly hair removal for a while, I think I’ll buy the one you use. I’ve started to make my own toothpaste and mouthwash. Baking soda, water, peppermint oil, tea tree oil all in a mason jar, all from zero waste shop. I’ve started to use a few drops of lavender oil instead of wearing perfume. It lasts more than a day and again can be bought at a zero waste shop. I try and be oil free in my food though (as well as vegan of course) Thanks again for the video! Xx

I found the shampoo bars great when I first started using them on my hair but they seemed to really damage my scalp 🤔 and after 3 or 4 I had to stop using them because it was doing so much damage my scalp was so full of dry skin it was actually getting sore :/ And I always seem to struggle with period products too I bought the cup but didn’t find it comfy at all! And then bought reusable sanitary towels but they kept moving which left me with leaks all the time! I use an eco egg for my washing though and I find that great and I’ve encouraged so many people to buy them! Zero waste is so difficult in Ireland but it’s my goal to get there some day! This was a really good insight into what I could do more of to protect the environment. A few of the things you mentioned had bamboo in, is this still okay for the environment because it means cutting down bamboo? I’m no expert so was just wondering 😊
@FamilyFreedom
@FamilyFreedom 5 лет назад
Good question Georgie, from our understanding bamboo is one of the most sustainable materials to use as it grows extremly fast and it absorbs five times more carbon dioxide and produces 35% more oxygen than a similar group of trees 🙂👌

I save the jars and drink out of them as well. There is no need to buy new stuff all the time🤷‍♀️ Jars are thicker as well and don’t break as easily😊👍 Do the soap nuts work well? I haven’t heard any good about them. Sadly.

I've always thought some sort of glass ear swab would be a great alternative. I've looked everywhere and it doesn't seem to exist but just think, it could be heated slightly which would also aid with wax removal and therefore probobly more safe than poking at your ear for ages 👣🌳
