Note the jacket switch at the end of the film. Spock's jacket has an orange stripe on the left shoulder. McCoy has a green stripe. When Kirk says " out there , thataway ." The jackets are switched. Look closely.

I still remember my parents buying me a star trek happy meal on the way to see the movie. Still have the plastic tricorder. Another happy meal I got a weeks later had a little board game with punch out Klingon and enterprise tokens from the side of the box. It was basically like parchissi in that you had to get your token to the center moving it from the outside in. You used a regular coin as dice to move 1-2 spots. There were special moves for screwing over you opponent but I can’t remember the details from 40 years ago. I was 9 at the time. I remember it because I was in the hospital with severe dehydration (result of flu) and I played that game over and over with my mother for days.

One of the most interesting (to me) pieces of rare TMP trivia is that there's a good reason that the insides of the warp nacelles light up but not the outsides (the way they do from the TNG era onwards). The original conceptual art for the warp speed effect envisioned a sort of groovy "ladder" made of pure light passing between the warp cells, and the nacelles would "climb" this ladder in a forward direction. A little bit like the TNG warp core, tilted on its side. This is why there's an informal rule that starships must always have line of sight between their warp nacelles. Ultimately, this ladder effect was one of many visual effects that didn't make it into the final film, and in Star Trek II we got a completely different warp effect that lasted until the TNG era.

I actually really like Goldsmith's original cue. It's sweeping and epic. Funnily enough one of the reasons it was rejected was because to Wise it made him think of sailing ships. Ironically when Nicholas Meyer hired James Horner to do The Wrath of Khan, his direction was, "Think of sailing ships!" If Goldsmith had scored Wrath of Khan he would have been very confused lol

No mention of Space: 1999? It's always seemed like Roddenberry was watching it. Star Trek uniforms in TMP looked a lot like Space 1999's and the Ilia android was very similar to what happened in the Space: 1999 episode "Ring Around the Moon."
@1monki
@1monki 3 года назад
I like Space: 1999, but I doubt it was an inspiration. It seemed like _2001: A Space Odyssey_ was the reference for a lot of the film visually, and some of the tone. And they needed to personify this very conceptual antagonist in some way, there's probably only so many ways to do that.
@facttrek
@facttrek 3 года назад
Actually, the crewperson replaced by an identical android idea predates Space: 1999. It was a plot point in Roddenberry's "Robot's Return" story outline from his 1973 Genesis II series proposal , which was what Alan Dean Foster adapted into the "In Thy Image" story outline for the aborted 1978 Star Trek II TV series, which became the basis of the TMP script.

Interesting factoid vid on Star Trek, TMP, and thanks. Spock's line of being there for essential purposes should have been kept. When I saw it in theater years ago--I was about eighteen at the time--I thought it was way too slow. Beautifully shot, and some sequences were outstanding, but too slow. Robert Wise was a great technician, and he had helmed The Day The Earth Stood Still, but that had a different script and didn't seem so dragged out. Star Trek did. Still, it had the nostalgia appeal going for it, and #2, #3, and #4 made up for a lot.

I've always felt the TMP uniforms looked more like a natural evolution of the TV uniforms then the later TWOK were. The only problem that I ever had with them was the dull gray color. I know that Paramount wanted the ship and crew to look more like real life NASA stuff with a much more antiseptic look, but I definitely missed the colors. That said, I've heard various members of the cast complain about the TMP costumes for being uncomfortable. George Takei tells a humorous story about how, since the uniforms were actually a.jumpsuit and not the 2-piece that they look like, and the zipper was hidden along the shoulder seam and down the back, you needed to be able to get someone to unzip you if you needed to use the bathroom! So everyone was supposedly very happy to get the new ones for Star Trek 2.

Re: The Spacewalks of Kirk and Spock at the "Memory Wall". Was it rejected for cost, (it was already built), or because it was boring, (it was, just from what you've shown), or because it was a ripoff of the 2001: A Space Odyssey's version from a decade previous that was exciting, mostly from HAL's death?

I love the Motion Picture, uniforms but I do appreciate they look a bit cheap and disposable. I know that was part of the idea.

Western European? I mean, that’s not exactly where the Judeo-Christian notion of God comes from, but sure.

It started in the Middle East but really flourished when Rome adopted Christianity as its official religion.

Riceball01 - I think Judaism had done an awful lot of flourishing before Rome came along.

That is how you end up with a white man with a reddish-brown beard as Jesus. That being the case, which it is, and since apparently God made man in his image, that puts Africa, South America, the Native Americans from North America and Asia(which includes the Middle East) on the outs. So yeah, Western European. There really is no other way to see it.

I still think this film is terribly overrated. I rewatched it a few years ago and was like, "Wow, what a great movie!" My only complaint about it is that I wish some of the bridge crew, other than Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, had more to do. But that's not terribly difference from most of the films.

Love those Klingon battle cruisers. Most detailed, best image we ever got. I invite traditional Star Trek fans to enjoy a completely free novel, just Google Star Trek Lost Destiny.
