Dad found my "gay stuff". He was angry (confused; scared; threatened?) Mum said to him if he can't accept it he'd lose a son. Good choice mum. Wise decision Dad. A person is (a lot) more than their sexuality.

I can confirm that a lot of homophobic/transphobic people struggle with their own sexuality and gender identity. When I was in high school, I was super homophobic. I didn’t express it to anyone but kept it in my heart as something I didn’t like because I was scared. I thought that if being gay or trans went away from this world, I would be ok. That it would fix me. Well that didn’t happen. Some odd 10 years later I came out to myself as gay and non-binary. It just goes to show that sometimes fear and misinformation causes hate. But that can change.

I used to be transphobic and racist (I hate that I was) I stopped being racist at 6 luckily, But I was very transphobic, I read a book with a little trans girl in it (a true story) and I went to my siblings and said “This books meant to be of powerful girls, but there’s a boy wanting to be a girl in here, don’t know why they put him in.” I didn’t even know what LGBTQIA+ was at the time but as a looked back I realised I was being very transphobic.

I once went up to a lesbian classmate and just berated her about how she was disgusting and should off herself and stuff like that. 3 years later I dropped the homophobia and transphobia, because I finally got away from my father, and after I put enough distance between him and I, I came out as a gay trans guy. Bonus: my mom said it was just a phase and I replied that her marriage was also just a phase.

I really needed this episode. A while ago I was being bullied by an adult homophobe online (I'm a minor /under 18)It all started when I left a reply on a comment stating my orientation and identity. Bearing in mind for 1 sec I did not see the other replies he had said I only saw them later. RU-vid later came with a notification of a hateful reply. I did turn of notifications on the comment but stupid me decided to reply back. This started a whole war. We had other members of the community so at least I wasn't fighting alone. I was fine up until I checked it and I see this with my name tagged on @artlover you should be ⚰️ 💀 It hit hard. It was my fault to keep trying to change them but it was like someone punched me in the stomach. We tried to tell him that he literally told a minor to die but he denied it. We decided to do something. The plan was to call the police but there was one issue, none of us were out yet. So we sat there debating while all he did was taunt us. It did end when it hit 500 replies (because that's the yt limit) but I still need this. Thanks for this pbr🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

Imagine being homophobic girl with even more homophobic family and then falling in love for the first time in your life......for another girl. One whole year I was in denial with no one to speak about it, then understood that it's "not getting better" and finally decided to do something with it. To _accept_ it. It took me around two years to get comfortable with who I am. And that would be three years in total of mental problems... So thanks for all the people who do videos like that, write books and create TV shows. It's really hard to change someone's ideology, but it's not impossible. Be Yourself. Be Proud. Love you guys~ ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 The only thing left is to come out somehow lol 😬

There used to be a point where my mom was very openly homophobic. (In everyday life. I haven’t come out to her yet.) She’d tell me derogatory things about lesbians and liking girls and that broke my heart, but she’s recently changed her mindset. Being closeted, I seem to others as a very strong ally to the LGBTQ+ community, and she came to me and told me, “I love that you’re so empathetic towards people that need to be defended. If you came to me and said *”I’m gay”* , that’s great and I’d support you.” My point is that people can change. This might sound cliche, but it does get better. I’m not even out of the closet, but knowing that I’d be supported makes things better.

I have seen people in my family changing as well. Not everyone will change, and they don’t want to change. But both my aunt and grandma aren’t homophobic anymore. My grandma is very religious and hated the “sinning gays”. My aunt and uncle very wary of the united church because they didn’t care as much about gay people. They changed though, with my cousin inviting her girlfriend to Christmas dinner at my grandmother’s house in recent years. And my grandmother doesn’t care. My aunt and uncle both support their son and went to his wedding when he married a man. All of these people changed. Again, not all people want to. Some people will never change. I like your channel, it's really nice. I'm transgender he/him and I have a lot of friends in the LGBTQ+ community. One of my teachers doesn't use my pronouns and the name I want to be called. She said that I can't put Jack on my paper, because that isn't my name in the school system and so it would look like this is someone else's work and that I would need papers to do all that. If someone wanted to have a nickname, do they need papers ,no they don't.
@PoweredByRainbows
@PoweredByRainbows 4 года назад
So that is something you need to report to your principal or your guidance councilor in school. You should be allowed to use your name and not your dead name. And you should be able to use Jack because when I was in school, I could use Matt even tho my name is Matthew so nicknames are fine on assignments. Your teacher is more than likely being subtle in their transphobia. So talk with their superiors at school.

I don't know if it's still an issue, but back when I was still in school, I just started only putting my last name on papers when I realised how uncomfortable my deadname made me and because well... I still haven't decided on a name yet. I never got into any trouble for it, but I guess it depends on whether you have a common last name or not. Mine is very rare, so I never got mixed up with anyone. You could at least ask if that would be a compromise... Anyways, I hope you're doing well. ^^

It felt nice seeing someone talk about this. I am a bisexual and transgender male. And my parents at home are always making hurtful comments on what I choose to be. @PoweredByRainbows
@PoweredByRainbows 3 года назад
You're welcome and just because it sounds like your parents are making you think that your gender and your sexuality are a choice, please know that there is scientific evidence to support the fact that being transgender is valid and it's something in your DNA. And your sexuality of being bisexual is also in your DNA from the moment you are conceived to the moment you pass. So, you didn't make the choice to be bisexual or trans - you just made the choice to be happy and live your life as you were always meant to live it. That's something I talk a lot about in other parts of this coming out advice series on our channel where you make the choice to be happy and invite others to your celebration of who you are and who you love. It's up to others on whether or not they choose to stay at that party and celebrate with you. Sadly, some parents leave that party and don't accept this part of their children but I want you to always know, we have an amazing community in the LGBTQ and we are a family. So, we'll always be here to support you. Just in case you don't already know, we do weekly episodes to help the community better understand topics like this so be sure to keep coming back. Even if it's too dangerous for you to subscribe because your parents might see your subscription list, we will always be one search away. I am familiar with the LGBTQ . I have a lesbian daughter and a transgender son. I had always planned to come out as gay and eventually transition from MTF. I felt I needed to wait so my children could establish their own identities before I could come out for fear that homophobes might think they were following their Dad's footsteps. I didn't come out until I was 50 and had 2 failed hetero marriages. I made certain that they never thought of any sexual feelings or romantic feelings were in any way wrong & encouraged them to make their own decisions. When I finally did come out nearly all of my friends and relatives had the general thought of "It's about time!". Including my doctor's and psychiatrist. My family is completely behind me and have nothing but love for Jess 2.0 and actually treat me with more respect now. I watch these videos so I can better understand myself and my children as well as help others. Thank you Professor Pride!

I would like to state for the record that phases can exist, but that does not make you any less valid, or invalidate the phase if that is different than how you feel now. (Please feel free to correct me if you see anything wrong in this statement, I'm not perfect!)

I agree with this! Sometimes it takes time to figure out who you are and find a label you're comfortable with. I have been stuck between bi and pan recently. I know this comment is a little late but I like to put transphobic arses through a little thought experiment. Tell them to imagine having something like something added on or taken off to alter their "gender" ie sex. They find the idea unsettling every time, because the brain already matches the body for themselves. Transgender is just the brain in the wrong body put extremely simply, and since you cannot change brains you may feel the need to alter the body to match. Ask if he lost his pp tomorrow and couldn't get it back he wouldn't suddenly want to be a woman if that's the only thing the doctor could do? Gender and sexuality is determined before birth, and it's not going to take his away to accept others also exist and deserve human respect.

Actually for me it worked to talk with haters on Discord. My strategy is basically to question some of the stuff they say. Mostly they can't find an answer. If they are making fun of you, identify how they are making fun of you and tell them that you know what they are doing. Explain to them as if you would explain to a little child. I have younger siblings so this may be easier for me but if you come at them without a single hole in your explanation, they will get defensive and that is fun to watch, especially if you expose them for being defensive. Never use any cussing or insults even if they do. One of them called me a "f*cking homo a*s n-word" and I just calmly responded that I'm neither black nor gay but that they could call me a f*cking a*s of course. Throughout the messaging history I subtly made fun of their insults and didn't let anything they say get to me. I feel like they noticed it because after half an hour of texting they blocked me. Same with a person I was discussing with about if Aegosexuality (a micro label of Asexuality) was real or not. I identify as Aegosexual. I got them to block me too with sources and logic. So it actually works but if you don't feel confident about it, you shouldn't try it.

One of my closest friends recently came out and I’m so proud of them, they did it over text so everyone in the group chat was saying how much they supported them and their identity, but one of my other friends in the group chat didn’t reply to their coming out and I wasn’t sure if they did it on purpose. So then she invites people to a party but doesn’t invite my friend that just came out so then I was like hmm, maybe like she wanted to keep it small or something, but I realized that everyone in our group is going to a Halloween party which she isn’t hosting so after this I was like hmmmmmm. Then I brought it up with some of my other friends and they all agreed that it was strange so we asked the girl that didn’t invite them and she was like “oh I wanted to try a smaller group” which is a total lie because everyone is going to the Halloween thing so why can’t everyone go to her thing idk. So then I took things into my own hands and was like ‘I’m going to send some lgbt fan art to the group chat. So everyone likes it but she doesn’t like it, so then I sent another thing and she didn’t like the other one either, the I was like, there’s no way she didn’t see it. Also my friend is pretty religious which may have something to do with it. So now idk what to do, I could just be making something out of nothing. Idk if I should confront her about it or something.

I was really upset about some things recently… But this video helped me a little. My homophobic classmate constantly angered me and made me feel guilty for being part of lgbtq+. The thing is that he told everyone how he beat up gays with his gang several times… They found them on a dating app by pretending to be gay person themselves. ….and, you know, in place where I live, there is almost no one I can report this to. I feel helpless and I want to simply disappear sometimes….. so yeah, my slightly homophobic family added fuel to the fire. I don’t want to be afraid of people like them, but I also feel like I have no tools to deal with this. Even if I educate them, they will still see that hypertrophied picture in their head that they want to see. I hope that someday things will change…. If someone sees this.. stay strong, I love you all and I’m really proud of you. I just wanted to speak out in case someone else is going through it. ( sorry 4 my broken english) ♡

My family was very accepting of when I came out as FtM, mostly because all the family I know are LGBT. Some family friend have recently gotten back in context after 10 years and at first I was worried about her but she is very accepting of me too. But just me. Not her non binary child. Her child is 12 and I am 19 and she is convinced that she could tell I was trans growing up and that her child is cis because they 'act like their agab' and 'is too petty' to be anything but cis. I nor the enby child understand why she is so against her child being trans when she treats me fine. She always says they're 'only a child' and won't even let them be out as Bisexual because '12 year olds shouldn't be thinking of things like that'. I came out as FtM when I was 15 but when I was 12, I identified as genderfluid. When I was 4 I identified as a lesbian, at age 10, I started to identify as Pan and then at 13 I found I am Asexual Panromantic. But this family friend didn't know this and when I told them, they just told me I was different. Is she just hateful because it's her own child? Does anyone have any advice on how I can help her and her child?

At first I thought: "What the hell?" Later, I said: "Listen, you can't dictate who I am. It's not a sin, it's who I am and if you can't accept that, then we can't be friends anymore!" I felt like I didn't belong, but I was glad that was over.

How I address hate is with a calm voice and even friendlier body language, calling them “friend”, “my dude”, or “buddy”- that always throws them off (especially if I make sure to have my voice dripping in affection). At that point I can usually ether de-escalate the situation, get them to listen to me then or later, or weird them out enough that they avoid me (and whoever the target was) forever. Then depending on how it went I tell the teacher or the principal (I was buddy-buddy with my elementary and my middle school principals, I don’t know ether.) Uhh. Soooo- kill them with kindness??

All the ones who don’t accept you for who you are don’t deserve the gift of your kindness, beauty and companionship. You deserve love and respect from the ones who stand by your side even when the world starts to break. A little motivation speak

I came out as both trans and gay and lately my brother started to just adress me using the F-slur. The worst part about it is, that in calling me that, he's the only family member of mine, who doesn't misgender/deadname me.

What a dumbass, just block and report them, you can try and educate them or send them an informative video but usually it's not worth your time

I'm MtF and transitioning in my mid 30s and I live in a rough neighborhood. This video is very helpful. All the cars on the busy roads are processions of hate passing me while all the drivers and passengers point and make fun of me. It's comforting to hear others' experiences.

I'm bi and nonbinary. I told my mother I was bi after she asked me many times why I was talking about a "person" I would be dating / I like etc. and not a "girlfriend". She said that "gay sex" is disgusting to her but she would allways love me no matter what. A time after this at my mums birthday my sister and her argued over something (like they allways do) and my sister statet that my mum told her she would k*ll herself if I would date a guy. So she lied to me about "allways loving me no matter what". My sister said it out loud and I gave my mother the chance of telling me otherwise or maby apologize but she looked me dead in the eyes and said "What if I would do that". So long story short, my mum threatened to k*ll herself if I would ever be with a guy. My mum loves me and is very caring. She does everything to me and even after I moved out she texted me nearly every day. I just didn't text back really often. The problem is she doesn't know who I am. She does love me but not me now, maby me when I was 10. She wasn't there when I was bullied for 6 years, because she had her own problems and because of that we don't have a foundation of trust. (if it is called that way in English lol) This is why I don't want to tell her I'm nonbinary. But I'm not strong enough to break contact with her and I don't want to allow myself to forgive her. The worst thing is she thinks I'm cold hearted and doesn't know she is the reason why I don't want anything to do with her. She doesn't even know what she did wrong.
