Servicing a Riccar 8850 upright vacuum while discussing all the elements that made it one of the toughest and most legendary vacs of its era.
In the 1990s a small company named the Tacony Corporation moved their vacuum production from Taiwan to Saint James, Missouri. One of the first vacuums they produced there was perhaps the toughest vacuum of it's time, the 8850. It was so durable, so well built, and so well designed it still holds up to scrutiny today and has become a legend in the floorcare industry. Today, we look at what made the Riccar 8850 the former heavy weight champ while we give one a service.
House of Vacuums is Lynchburg's exclusive multi-line vacuum dealer. We sell the best vacuums in the world and fix the rest! We are conveniently located on Old Forest Road in beautiful Lynchburg, VA. Honestly, I'd recommend looking into a Cirrus CR99 if you're looking for a replacement. It's just like the Riccar 8955 in so many ways but are a nicer upgrade. The R25 models are top vacuums as well but I find they don't clean the same or better than the 8955 or the CR99.

Hi Matt, I just finished watching this video and I must tell you Riccar videos, especially like this one are my favorite. I am so sold on Riccar mostly because before I bought my R40 P I watched you take apart Riccar and along with your commentary concerning how well they are designed and produced convinced me to spend the money and buy Riccar. Watching you service machines, especially the Riccar's impresses me so much with your expertise in servicing vacuums. I wish more of your customers and maybe they do watch these videos, they would also be impressed with your skill and knowledge repairing vacuums. Maybe that is one reason why you are so successful in your area in the business and receive so much repair business. Anyway, yea you were right when you said your core audience would love this video. I consider myself to be apart of your core audience and I really did love watching this video. In fact I am sure I will rewatch this video several more times. Thanks again for another great video. Thanks for the video. I need to almost completely rebuild our 16 year old 8955 due to years of punishment and abuse from housekeepers and family members. Both the rear housing as well as the motor cover are broken. It also needs a new hose as well as that little red power switch activator and mounting plate. The foot pedal is also broken and it needs the typical service parts too (filters, belt and brush strips). Even in its fully beat down condition and with brush strips have never been replaced, it still fills up vacuum bags like nothing else. I saw your other video on rebuilding the roller and I need to do that too, along with replacing the worn rubber clutch pad and source some of those adjustment washers. The problem is that it is going to cost ~$300 in parts and some of the parts I need are on back-order and are currently difficult to get from Riccar due to supply chain issues. With as much as this one needs, I'm torn between resurrecting it to hopefully last for another 10 or so years and replacing it with something new, like the Hoover Commercial HushTone. Not sure I want to pony up the money for a new Riccar.

Hi Matt, I'm a new subscriber & really loved hearing you rave about the Riccar 8800. I have an 8900 & it is an excellent beast ! I'm not familiar with all the Riccars made since the 8900, and I'm interested in looking for a used Riccar. Can you please advise if theres any models over the years that were problematic-they all can't be as awesome as the 8800-8900 models! I'm a vacuum freak and already own more vacs than I need. Thank you, love listening your knowledge & love of vacs
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 2 года назад
Hi Sara, thanks for the sub! Nothing wrong with being a vacuuming freak... I can relate and also own more vacs than I should. The 8900/8800 series, 2000 series and 4000/R/VIB/R20 series are all workhorses that will take a beating. It will definitely be harder to find a clean 2000/4000/R series since they are a little older, but you should be able to find R20s and VIBs with relatively little use. Units to be aware of are the earlier production runs of the Radiance and Brilliance. Model number RAD.5 and earlier and BRLX.5 and earlier should probably be avoided. They were very complex machines and needed a little time on the market to iron out all the kinks. Newer units are much, much better. The R25 series is relatively new (2 years old), so we don't have a lot of long-term data yet. However, I have sold quite a few of them and also use them for my loaner vacuum fleet and they have held up very well so far. I don't have any major reservations about them. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

My Sharp Twin-Energy is 24 years like new. Might open it to clean/oil bearings, install brushes. Uses an Ametek motor, Lamb division. Parts readily available. Panasonic U bags fit same and are inexpensive. Older Kenmore cannisters, like my mom used to buy, used USA made, Ametek motors, as did Tri-Star, and others. Makes no weird noises, just curious.

Glad I found this video! As a kid I've always loved vacuums so starting to catch the bug again as an adult. Crazy how well built this Riccar 8000 series is! Reminds me of my Mom's Panasonic from back in the day. Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on the Sebo 300/350 mechanical series? The simplistic and rugged design has my enthusiast side intrigued, but practically speaking do they agitate carpet and clean as well as these older Riccars, or even close to the performance of the tandem air Riccars?
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! The Sebo Mechanicals are super stout, reliable machines. However, in my experience they do not agitate/clean quite as well as the 8000 series. The Tandem Airs are in a whole different ballpark. They are the best cleaning machines with onboard tools, bar none. They are beasts. IMO, the Sebo Mechanicals and Riccar R25s are on pretty equal footing in terms of cleaning capability. Hope that helps!

Excellent thorough service video! You touched on but didn't expand on a potential issue that we have with our 8955--broken plastic housing at the axle on both sides as well as the center axle guides. Our unit is often used on 12 inch square ceramic tiles and the user vacuums at right angles to the tile grout joints. I feel this has caused impact damage to the plastic housing. A far as I know, the housing is not available. I have attempted to fashion sheet metal axle bushings but have had one side fail withing two weeks because the epoxy did not adhere well to the smooth plastic. I plan to attempt the repair once more with better bracing and more epoxy for the bushings. Any other suggestions?

@HouseOfVacuums Год назад
Hey Marvin! I know exactly what you are talking about when the body where the axle goes gets worn. The only sure-fire fix is to replace the dust compartment (body). The single stage motors that the other Riccars use do not perform like this 2 stage. There is a video of this machine outperforming a Riccar Vibrance due to the 2 stage motor. It is also the quietest Riccar due to the 2 stage design. It’s a shame that they no longer make these as I truly love my 8955!!

They have too many bells and whistles, and the reliability is out the window!
@panasonicvac4036
@panasonicvac4036 Год назад
Well the answer to that of why they discontinued them, they're definitely more outdated nowadays in the marketing view. The design has been around since the 1960s' and more consumers over the years would want something that is not only new but something they feel like they had to buy because they think it'd make their life easier. Tacony I'll admit did do some new things on the R25 that I honestly do like over these models like maneuverability, easier to maintain, and faster to use. But for performance, quality and reliability, the newer models are definitely not the same. Luckily we have the Cirrus CR99 that's still being sold today since it also uses a twin fan motor and other things that makes them classics like the Riccar. If I had a 8955 and wanted a new machine similar to it, the CR99 is what I'd get.

Do they make a hepa bag for this machine?
@HouseOfVacuums
@HouseOfVacuums 2 года назад
They do! I actually put a HEPA bag in it at the end because it just didn't feel right putting a paper bag in. I believe the bags are labelled as being for the "8900 Series", but they will fit just fine in the 8850. Cheers!

@House Of Vacuums do you use a particle tester at your business?

Hey Tim! Unfortunately, a good particle counter is pretty pricey, so we do not have one as of yet.

I have one older than this, one of Riccar's first vacuums, the HP-30. Mine needs a new belt and I can't find anyone that knows what year it was released. Riccar just blew me off and said they will not provide support for a vacuum this old when I tried to get a copy of the instruction booklet from them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qdjcyEgswQw.html

Oh man, I'm not surprised that they didn't have documentation for the HP-30. I'm sure those files are long gone. I will say, that is a very cool machine!

@@HouseOfVacuums Yeah it was a hail mary, and it was the assistant or secondary CEO that got back to me. I'll still keep looking. I might get lucky and it maybe has a date written on the motor or somewhere inside from the manufacturing process. Thanks! It feels very clunky to use, you can tell it was likely their first one. lol By the mid 90s they definitely got more rehearse in what to build and made them a lot smoother.

"need replaced" Why does everyone talk like idiots now? I hear so many people on youtube say things like "needs replaced" or "needs painted" and it makes them all sound like they never graduated grade school. I don't get it. What's so hard about speaking like a grown man? Maybe give it a try.

Yikes, that's a lot of little parts. There isn't a tutorial video, but here is the parts breakdown which will give you the order. Hope this helps! photos.app.goo.gl/rauewp7BHyzV83gH7
