I’m planning on replacing all vacuum hoses too, they’re all super hard. I know as soon as I try to remove one, it’ll crack. It’s a total of 12-13 hoses and around $200 from Subaru online. Probably worth it too.

I respect the quality of your work and your wealth of knowledge on these strange engines with the pistons pointed in all the wrong directions.

Recently bought a 2011 Forester and have been watching learning valuable info on Subarus, I'm no stranger to wrenching on cars as soon as the weather warms a bit more I'm rebuilding my F150 engine and trans, but I digress, watching your videos gets a little odd because your voice sounds exactly like my brothers that was in the airforce. Those bottom rear cover bolt are soooo much fun when they swell up from corrosion and won’t turn! (Was that sarcastic enough, I feel like I can be more.) Had to use an extra long, ball ended carbide bit in a die grinder to remove the bolt heads on more than one occasion in order to slide the valve/cam cover off.

I didn’t realize how difficult this spark plug job was on the Outback XT till I tried it myself. Other than the motor mounts nuts, does the engine support rod has to be loosened as well in order to raise the motor? Looking under the car, one could probably raise the engine by the motor mounts themselves with a rigged 2x4 instead of having to lift it by the oil pan.
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 2 года назад
The engine mounts don't need to be touched. Never lifted an engine on these for plugs.
@Mike_44

@@MrSubaru1387 Maybe I'm overthinking this too much.. it was a bitch for me getting the #2 spark plug off.. had to use a combination of swivels/extensions to do so. I can't imagine how much more difficult the rear is since the frame tapers towards the rear. This is why I was thinking of creating some sort of rig to elevate the motor from the bottom. Or heck, using the crane to lift it just a bit. Spark plugs are only changed every 30K miles anyways..

Definitely recommend replacing all of the PCV hoses. Also the suction hose and o-ring on the p/s if it hasn't been done. The intercooler to intake hose usually goes bad from oil and heat. The short fuel hose on the driver's side too. I like to remove the engine mount nut as well but also one bolt on the pitch rod and jack up each side of engine. The older turbo EJs were Aisin, if I remember correctly. I still do coolant at 60k for turbo engines because of the heat. My 05 GT wagon EJ255 was done at 200k. So done the bearing halves just fell out when I split the case and I built a EJ257 with forged pistons. I would recommend replacing the suspension parts with Spec B components. They are inexpensive and still available from Subaru. I did the Spec B lower control arm bushings as well as the aluminum diff and rear upper arms and they made a nice difference in handling (lightweight too). Later, I did the full Spec B front and rear suspension with aluminum control arms, the Bilsteins, STI pink springs and 06-07 18" wheels. Sometime down the road, swap out the 5EAT for the Lego (non-DCCD) 6-speed and Torsen LSD.

Would the floor jack on the front diff with the pitch stop out not work better to lift the engine up

Hey, I have a question for you Mr.Subaru, I have a 99 impreza outback sport with 2.2l and a manual trans. Now I know it's an ej22, but which one specifically? Ej223, etc? And the I also am about to replace that engine with a used engine, another ej22, and any advice you would like to give me on what all to address as for as preventative stuff to replace BEFORE putting it in would be greatly appreciated. I know I want to do the complete timing kit, and most of the gaskets and seals, but I'm not sure what all gaskets and seals I should focus on, as far as like, absolutely should do stuff, ya know. I also plan to install a new clutch and was thinking about upgrading it a little but and am also open to your suggestions on this. Any help you could give me would be VERY appreciated. Your the man dude, thanks

Look at the ID plate on the strut tower under the hood. It will tell you which EJ22 you have. Likely an EJ222 or EJ223

An unrelated question. Why does Subaru recommend a 60000 mile spark plug change for my 2018 forester? I had them changed today at 60300. They said old plugs looked pretty good. Could I go maybe 5 years/75000 between plug change? Seems like I could. My wife’s 2012 cx9 by Mazda recommends 100000 between plug changes. Why Subaru so conservative?

@troyfankell6581

Yes it is, even if it is totalled it is still worth it to fix in my opinion. The 08 had the best interior, the better front end with the 08-09 facelift and minor tweaks to the chassis. I didn't like the wheels as much as the 06-07, but they are such a good car.

Really glad you did this one.. This is basically my car in the wagon version which now has 213K miles and I have no idea who worked on it before. One of my fears is finding cross threads if I tear down the motor. Also, the PCV valve assy on these cars is a PITA to get at at that bottom clamp by the block, but of course you make everything look so easy lol. Do you recommend just buying new upper links? I was considering pressing in new bushings, depending on cost. Thanks for the video!
