'01 Limited w/316,000 miles on my daily driver. I concur with these issues & will add the exhaust manifold leak/tick, the white paint turns chaulky, and early models, if not all, need upgraded braking. Overall best truck ever built by man. Spark plugs are 30 min with a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning. The maintenance on this vehicle is very straight forward. Your return on investment is outstanding. 10/10

i bought my mom an 04 Toyota and can agree with the chalky white paint. I will add that I had to fix the traction light coming on and off.. it was due to a wire that was shorting out on the PRNDL shifter. just re-terminated and problem was good to go.

Owned a 2001 tundra and traded in for an 06 double cab almost 13 years ago. Mine is natural white which is a single stage, no clear coat paint. Apparently all their natural colors were done single stage. After she became chalky I had it repainted 2 years ago with a healthy clear coat. Looks brand new. I've had to replace inner/outer tie rods, radiator cap, normal wear and tear. That's it. I did have the dealer do my timing chain and associated water pump, etc at the prescribed interval. In the next year I plan on changing all AC components myself, proactively changing the alternator, and keeping an eye on the secondary air injection system. Keeping her a while longer.

I have an 03 Sequoia with 270k. I've had to replace the front sway bar end links twice and the rear door handle once. I have rust on the rear wheel wells and a broken radio antenna. Also, some of the radio lights don't work. And my driver door rattles on windy days or when going over a bump. A shop is now fabricating new replacement parts. Other than that, my Sequoia has been trouble free since I purchased it in July 2003.

Thanks for your response! I have my '03 in the shop now for the sway bar links, cross arm and ball joints in the front. It shakes terribly! Can't wait to get it out. As far as the other stuff: the antenna is broken and the back door latch just broke! But....got the parts from Amazon and I'm gonna dive it!

Took delivery of my new 03 Tundra in November of 02 so the truck is currently 16 years old. 130,000 miles and nothing but tires, fluids, filters, batteries, 1 timing belt and nothing but maintenance items. Knock on wood but nothing has worn out yet. Incidentally I have never changed the transmission fluid because the manual didn't say to do it. Fluid still looks and smells new and runs great. I'm hoping to drive it forever. Like your channel. Great information.

@Erik Mathews I notice on Scotty Kilmer's channel he recommends not replacing tranny fluid, saying that problems occur shortly afterwards. My son is pestering me to change it, and I am sitting on the fence. Any more suggesting I change it?

‘07 Sequoia. First issue was rear door handle breaking, and replacing the cable. $50 for parts and a couple hours labor. Did the cheater wire like the video for emergency opening. Next issue was that primary air pump thing that makes it Cali compliant....the fan blades are plastic and they disintegrated. I put a bypass on it, cost $100ish, annoying fan whine gone. Axle warped at 130k, had to replace it along with Ujoints. Need to replace shocks and struts. Radiator split at 140k, replaced it. It’s been a pretty reliable ride all these years and overall maintenance costs are good. It was my wife’s primary vehicle for a few years, then mine for a few years, and now my college age son is driving it. We plan on driving it for awhile longer.

'02 SR5, ~245k, daily drive, 10 years in salt/snow (Ohio) and 5 years in desert heat (Las Vegas), bought for cheap when it was 4 years old. First, we are SUPER hard on cars, I replace ceramic breaks almost yearly on our cars. I agree with tie rods, antenna, back window, and power steering issues. I have replaced all myself with little issue. I just bought the shocks, struts, and ball joints for their first replacement. It is worth the couple of extra bucks to get Moog parts that last compared to the cheaper options. I am also doing the timing belt and alternator for maybe the the first time(I can't remember for sure) in the fall when it cools down. Otherwise, this car is insanely reliable and worth the price. So much so, that my in-laws just bought an '08 based on seeing how little issues we have. No paint or rust issues. I would recommend the headlight restore kits for under $10 and some elbow grease instead of replacing them. My horn did go out, which I replaced, but it seems to be a wiring/contact issue somewhere. That is the first thing I am tackling. Seriously, totally worth the price with little maintenance. As it stands today, I don't think I will ever buy a non-Toyota/Lexus based on how reliable they have been compared to my other cars.
@farmsgrace341
@farmsgrace341 6 лет назад
00101010111001101100 check to see if you are getting any contact on the horn switch behind the airbag. I have had this problem on a few older toyotas and Lexus. There is a thin ribbon in a rotating assembly that connects all the features of the steering wheel(horn, control buttons and airbag signal and power) to the rest of the vehicle. The ribbon moves around in the rotating assembly every time you move the steering wheel, which is a lot, so they eventually wear and break. When this happens your airbag light might come on too. It's not too hRd to replace though. Just got to pull the steering wheel .

"02 SR5 w/260k, in 4wd every day where I live on top of a small "mountain" in WA state. Normal annual maintenance costs of around $500, and it runs like crazy. This rig is just totally reliable with no issues. Will be putting the Nokian studded Hakeppellitta 9's on this winter, because the dirt/rock/gravel "road" up to our place can get very icy and it's already really steep and twisty.

Buy OEM for ball joints only. Ball joints are the most common catastrophic failure on first gen Tundras and Sequoias, and probably half of them are due to using MOOG replacements that are very poorly made. The other half is probably a total lack of maintenance/replacement. Toyota corrected their original issue with ball joints, and OEM replacement really is the only proven safe option (outside of upper control arm replacements with uniballs instead of ball joints).

Bought 2001 V8 4 wheel drive Sequoia (195K miles) in April 2018. I LOVE this vehicle. I did break off the inside door handle on drivers side, so for now I roll down window to use the outdoor handle. Well, today I was idling in fast food drive through line for awhile and when I finally got on the road again I noticed a noise coming from my car when I would step on the gas pedal. I kept trying to confirm it was from my vehicle (getting 3 kids to be quiet). When I realized it was and stopped a feet hundred feet at the next stop sign, I saw white smoke coming from under the hood. I immediately pulled over. It is a hot texas day now (105 heat index). Waiting to have it towed now. Maybe radiator? The dashboard temp gauge never lit up though? Smell associated with smoke resembled a burning smell :( I hope my baby will be repairable. :(

Glad I found this! I was just doing research on these, I want to buy a larger SUV to turn into a camping rig/DD. Seeing yours with almost 400k on it is a good testament to the longevity! The other vehicle I'm considering is a Tahoe/Yukon of the same year, but I think the Yota has a better look and interior (though I really love the GM V8's). Obviously the 4.7 lasts a long time, but I really hate that it has a timing belt.

Purchased my 2004 Sequoia about a month ago. 154,000 miles, one owner. Took a bit of a chance because state inspection had lapsed a couple of months before but the seller had a brand new Sequoia parked in his garage and he just didn't get round to inspecting. He was asking $4500 but I knocked him down to $4000. The under-frame had been deemed solid by Toyota but it did need a small section welding along with a new rear exhaust, this work with the state inspection cost me $500. Timing belt will need replacing soon, a local garage has quoted me $350 for the labor, the Aisin timing belts which include water pump are $165 on Amazon. It is definitely a gas hog so you wouldn't want to use for a long daily commute, but is very roomy and makes for an excellent utility/camper vehicle. Mine is in excellent condition and is as solid as a rock, definitely a keeper!

My 02 Sequoia ...Baddass, I bought her new back then and other than the rear wheel well rusting, and the rear door not opening, and the check engine light being on for 6 years with her still staring up and running with 50k miles after she that light came on ...she rocks. I replaced the front shocks about 2 years ago, rear calibers about 2 months ago, her timing chains been replaced 80k miles ago, and I had the rack and pinion and all that replaced 5 years ago. I havent touched the transmission fluid, filter none of that, and knock on wood she remains powerful to this day...I also replaced the head lamps too, and my driver seat is tore up from in and out in and out for nearly 19 years...I love her, because she reliable, and never gotten stuck in over 1 foot of snow up her in New England where she's parked at. Toyota actually added their frame rust stuff all over the frame, and they replaced the spare tire elevator, and the a/c compressor but that was done back in 04 with the compressor, ..

I bought a 2006 toyota sequoia a fully loaded sr5 with 250,000 miles. Bought it for 5k and ran like a clock. This is one of the last years of this generation so its got the vvt system and a smooth 5 speed auto transmission. We got a letter saying it needed frame replacement. We payed nothing because it was a recall and got a brand new rental for 2 months. So far hasn’t quit on us once. Went from illinois to chicago and back (2500 miles) and nothing. I also had to replace the handle and also interior seals like to wear. Overall amazing truck and way better than my old expedition.

I bought a 2006 Toyota Tundra DLB TRD Sr5 4x4 back in May of 2006 with 4miles on it. It's absolutely the best truck I've ever own...I Have 158,600 miles on it and all I've ever done to it other than the required maintenance is change the clip on the driver side rear for the emergency brake and the bushings on the front tie rod along with tires of course. I have used it to haul/tow just about everything there is and it also get used in the winter to plow snow. The only issue I have with it is, with the 4.7 L engine while towing it lacks power going up steep hills. I can't tell you how many time I towed other vehicles out when they get stuck - everything from cars to tractor trailers. I just put it in 4 WL, put the shifter in 2nd gear and use the L shift button. This button locks it in 1st gear and occasionally I might have to put chains on. This is NO BS. Oh did I mention that I live in the Mountains of Western Montana. I Love this Truck and will keep it until it dies but I think it will outlast me. Oh, I backed into a tree the other day while hunting so I have a dent in my rear bumper but other than that it's still in great shape. I've always had a Ford or Chevy before but I'll never hesitate to buy another Toyota if that time comes. Thanks, Nathan for letting me tell my story. Art

Next step is to replace #3 and #4 02 sensors and get a new muffler because its growling! (LOL!) ALSO...checked online with Toyota for recalls and found one for the passenger side airbag. I recently installed my 4th tailgate release handle, and in the process, learned something important. Yes, the handle does fail, but it actually due to the faulty catch at the bottom. The catch is metal, but encapsulated in plastic, causing it to bind as it wears through. When it gets too bad, it puts excessive strain on the handle (at the other end of the cable). Replace the latch mechanism and keep it clean...you probably won't have to touch it again for 10 years. Also, consider replacing the rear window scraper seal and you will keep out the dirt and water that cause all the problems in the first place.

We've had our Maroon 2007 Sequoia SR5 since new. 155k on it now. Changed trans fluid at 100k. Air pump went out - replaced with "hack" module to fool the computer. Third time I did the rear hatch handle, I went with a metal one and it has been fine since. Just replaced the original shocks and springs this morning - about three hours without rushing. Replaced the headlights because of the hazing. Replaced the spark plugs at 100k. Replaced the water pump at 70k so I went ahead with a new timing belt then. Valve cover gaskets were leaking and got replaced at 145k. Been through umteen tires - now back to Bridgestones and getting better wear. The TPM sensors all went after about 10 years. I have never gotten better than 13.5mpg and mine is a completely stock 2WD. I just noticed this week that the A/C is not as cold when idling on a hot day; so I'll go check the electric fan tomorrow morning. The power steering hoses are starting to seep. I have the same cheapo backup camera as you - just for backing up to the car trailer too! It has served us well and if it were a 4WD, we'd probably keep it forever. Our new home will really require 4WD to get to, so we'll have to let the ol' girl go soon. Too bad since ours has spent her life in Texas and is 100% rust free!

As I was fixing my newly replaced metal rear hatch handle, I did something that I think will forever fix that metal handle. Since they just twist and bend down, and the main contact on inside of handle has an upside down V.. I took needle nose pliers and bent it back to like new, then here's the key. I took a nice nail. A hammer. A pc of wood, and a cutting disc sitting by me.. so I tapped the nail with wood to give it about 3 small bends and a twist. Went under upsidedown V, upward, inward, over spring, then to the home stretch under (or may have had to go over.. doubt it though). About 5 zip tiies cut off clean. Hit the head n tip with cutting disc to fit perfectly, so it wont snag on door body. That thing will never break haha!! And honestly. It took like 10 minutes. Takes 20 to get it in n out of hatch lol. If you know how. Got it all back together before n been like "Damnit!! I forgot the Phillip's screws on the inside of outer panel." Lol

Great video. I would add definitely do the lower ball joints if you haven't got them done under the recall. Also the steering rack bushings should be done in the high mileage rigs. When they get sloppy they can cause the steering rack to fatigue and crack. If you replace the lower ball joints or steering rack use ONLY OEM parts for those. A little more expensive but 10x the quality of Chinesium auto parts store ones. Another thing to watch for is the clutch fan gets brittle as is ages. When it explodes it can take out the radiator. But man with minimal maintenance these things are insanely durable.

I’ve had an 05 Tundra for 9yrs. A HUGE problem in northern salty road areas is transmission connector corrosion. You have to replace the internal trans harness and the body side connector. If you don’t fix it you will be stranded. I have also fixed pass front power door lock actuator, both tailgate latches and the handle, the hood latch needs done, and several years ago the master cylinder was puking into the brake booster which was a pain.

Did you end up with a 1st gen sequoia? I'm try to decide between the 1st and 2nd Gen sequoia because of 4.7 vs 5.7 v8 for towing 4000 pound camper. More power is better, but if 4.7 can more than handle it, I'll pay the lower price tag

01 toyota Sequoia with 300k on it. replaced the trans on it, keeping it maintained. need to do an oil change soon. back hatch handle broke, window does not roll down because i installed a system in and it broke the window off the tracks and caused a loud rattle in my hatch that wont go away. relay and motor works in the door, you can hear it. but nothing happens. 3rd alternator so far. i need to upgrade the alt to a higher amprage and do a big 3 on it so it lessens the possibility of it going out. my drivers door has trouble closing. 02 sensors go out alot as well. normally 1 and 2. 3 and 4 seem to be still holding up well. evap sensor goes bad or needs to be cleaned alot. another problem is with the 01-02 Sequoias, the trac control and vsc trac with engage by itself and will not allow you to use the breaks and it could/will drag you to any part of the road. it will lock the steering too. so it could get scary. but if you take out the relay itll be good. i get 6-9mpg with the heavy weight in the back. when the 02 sensors go bad i get around 4-5mpg. when bad 02 sensors, oil change needed and air filter need to be cleaned, as well as the mass air flow sensor, mpg can decrease dramatically. no one believes when i say i dont get the rating from the car used. (12-16mpg) until they ride with me and watch the sensor counts the numbers down 1 mile every 2-3 minutes. and then theyre thankful their car gets at least 18mpg. but i love this truck. its a very reliable truck. built very well, structurally. if this truck ever gives out on me, you best believe im going to build it back up and drive it until it fails again. this truck isnt going anywhere.

Well. Just had to scrap my 2001 Sequoia. So sad to see her go. 225K. Too bad, she still runs like a top. Bought new in Nov 2000. She has been a great vehicle. I was one of the very first frames to have been replaced by Toyota. Fought to get it done in 2013. The rust has just become too much. Rear end had to replace the diff cover which is actually sealed. You can purchase a steel cover and weld it after cutting off the rusted one. Also had issues with tailgate window rails rotting out and handle replacment. The rear emergency brakes needed to be replace. The ends were rotted out. Could not repair cost effectively. Drivers side manifold needs to be replaced. Then mech calls and says bad news. Oil pan is rotted and leaking. Checked it out and it is so rusted cannot even epoxy it. Too much to pull the motor to replace it. Living in high salt new england did its number on it. I towed a boat every summer for the last 15 years with it. Never had a problem. Good news is that I found a 2006 and it just had the frame replaced and control arms in OCT 2018. She is in great shape. Hardly any rust underneath. Body excellent. Just going to have them replace the water pump and timing belt as part of the deal. Out with the real old and in with the less old. Cannot wait to pick it up.

Bought my 06 Tundra with 76k on it, has 289k on it now and has pulled a 16ft tandem axle trailer almost every day since the day I bought it. Ball joints, carrier bearing, radiator, 3 sets of u-joints, a battery, and 2 timing belts is all I’ve done. Installed an after market trans cooler, unichip, cold air intake, header and exhaust right after I bought it. Drive the shit out of it every day and never had a single problem. Couldn’t be more pleased. I decided to buy one because my dad bought his 00 in May of 01 with 11miles on it, 460k+ miles and still daily drives it. Original motor, trans, dif,... nothing other than routine maintenance and wear and tear. Pretty sure Jesus drove a Tundra

I found a 2001 Tundra SR5 TRD V-8 4WD Off Road Extra cab that has 240,000 miles. The only reason I have any interest is because of the overall condition of the truck, it's absolutely amazing. Everything from the carpeting, seats, headliner and dash look very nice. Even on the exterior the truck it's amazing, no door dings, the paint looks 95%+ with no fading or peeling of the clear coat and even the bumpers both front and rear look very nice. If you looked at the nose of the truck alone you would think it has 50,000 miles. It has a Zebart spray in bead liner that looks unused. The only things I could find were the silver paint on the wheels is flaking off a little bit and the headlights are turning yellow. Under the hood it looks dam near new, no rust of any kind and even the paint looks good. The down side, it's at large car dealership and they are asking $7,400. How much of a risk would I be taking by buying a 2001 Tundra with high miles like this?

I have an 01' Tundra Ivan Stewart edition and absolutely love it. First gen tundras were the best trucks ever built in regards to overall quality. One very common issue on these that I didn't see addressed was the cabin temp controls light bulbs. Early models used green covers that allowed the bulbs to get too hot and fail prematurely. Very easy to fix though. Many tundra owners I know that had this problem didn't even realize these controls were supposed to be back lit.

Have a 2003 SR5, 2WD, with 150k miles on it (wife's daily driver). * - The rear shocks are a pain to change out if rusted out. * - Concur on the rear latch!!!! They have NO safety latch inside the rear door area either, which means you can't drop the rear tire if you can't open the door. * - Front lights - I used fine sandpaper (1000 - 2000 grit) and then applied Mother's Back to Black and they are no longer yellow after 4 months of direct Texas heat/sun. That is THE best restorer I have used, not sure what they put in it * - The water pump kit takes a good 6 - 8 hours to replace. These V8s have rubber timing belts!!!! Have no idea what in the hell Toyota would do that on a V8, but.... I replaced mine, which I think the manual states 120k is service interval. * - Brakes are sub par, wish they had 2 wheel disc brakes. * - Gas tank Evap canister - EXPENSIVE and will throw a code that can cause VSC light to go off, which causes inspection issues. The little valve for it didnt fix my code after trying it two times. *- 3rd brake light - will leak water into the back if the seal goes out. Other than that, this is a VERY solid vehicle and my wife refuses to sell it. What else can you say, it's a Toyota!

I'm a bit over 340K+ miles on my daily driver 05 A/C 2WD. Not a major to date, only maintenance and your normal high mileage wear items like timing belt/water pump, shocks, battery, light bulbs etc.. Doing ball joints/tie rod ends soon. My Alt/Starter/Rad are still original.. No leaks/oil burning at all between changes we'd drive it today cross country before my wifes Infiniti with 106k miles if that says anything about it's reliability. Had a creaking sound that drove me nuts so I replaced the U-joints and center bearing people blame it on but didn't need them, it was a trans mount aka rear engine mount Toy calls it doing all that creaking. I removed mount when I changed my trans fluid last time and soaked it overnight in the old fluid. Reinstalled and never heard another peep. May be able to WD40 it still on truck but I had no luck there, easy free fix. I had the bs emissions secondary air pump failure so I put the bypass kit on, cured that problem for good, my only issue really. No rust issues anywhere and it's not garage kept. Like all our vehicles I run it through an underbody spray wash a.s.a.p. after snows, we salt here. Headlight haze is on "all" vehicles today so unless D.O.T. forces makers to go back to glass lenses for safety reasons we need to get used to it. They allow makers to choose headlight appearance over safety is why. Although making them myself was my job before retiring I've always known polycarb sucks for headlights, we run tons of it daily for Clusters/head & tail lights/side markers etc.. at SRG/Guardian for most all car makes/brands so I know it all too well. It is better today than yrs ago but it needs a lot more work to be maintenance free for safety reasons imho. Our granny's know how to run a car through a car wash (albeit wrong direction at times) but buffing headlights? Notta, and they need all the help they can get to see you at night! So' I hope you clean theirs too folks.. Outstanding vehicle and after knowing all automakers quality control standards, helping build and owning most auto makes sold in this country over my yrs I have no doubt Toy makes the best vehicle on the road for reliability. No QC standard is even close btw, it is by far the most strict of all makes and still never good enough for Toyota, they strive hardest for the "best parts" before "best price" unlike all the others do! It's why they have outcomes like this when others only wish theirs could be.. www.trucktrend.com/how-to/project-trucks/1705-million-mile-tundra-the-tear-down/
