This video shows you how I fixed my seized shifter rod on a 2001 to 2006 Hyundai Elantra and a 2005 to 2009 Hyundai Tucson. I am in no way shape or form responsible if you break or damage anything you are working on nor am I responsible if you hurt yourself. You are doing this at your own risk this is simply a video showing how I fixed my issue on my vehicle. This fix should work if your gear selector inside of your car also known as your shifter will not go into Park or is extremely difficult to move into any gear for automatic transmissions only. Again you're doing this at your own risk I am in no way shape or form responsible for anything you do. You can try penetrating oil first then if it still does not move try adding heat with a butane torch ensuring not to catch anything on fire. Be sure to remove your battery before using the torch. Do not overheat the shaft. Once you heat it let it cool for a few minutes before you try and touch anything. Finally I I am not responsible for anything you do.

Thank goodness I found your video, same problem, 2007 Hyundai Tucson. I didn't heat mine though because it is under the battery shelf, so I had my wife work the gears while I laid into it with penetrating oil, now its as smooth as ever, Thanks Bro.

2007 Hyundai Tucson here. Your video worked!!!! 100%% As the comment below mine said, the battery shelf was in the way but I just stuck they spray straw through and around the underneath and dowsed it with penetrating lube. The next day it shifted smooth as silk!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

Believe I erased my comment by mistake (repost). Saw in another video that the large 12mm bolt to far right is in the wrong position. If you look at the plate that attaches to the shifter cable you can see that the nut loosened and moved due to resistance (black pain't scraped). Freeze video at 2:04 and enlarge and you can see the black paint chipped off just above the bolt due to the plate moving/tracking. Also at 2:04 look closely at the plate that attaches to the shifting cable and you will see a gap where you can adjust it up or down if you loosen the nut. At 2:04 the gap should be below that nut, not above it. This adjustment combine with everything in this video should solve most of this issue for everyone. Again, great video!! Thanks

Thanks for the video. Had a super stiff gear shift in my 2008 hyundai tucson Fwd to the point the car started jolting everytime I try switch a gear. I saw your video and troubleshoot my problem. The stud going down in the system was really stuck. I removed the battery, then removed all the nut to get the caliper off the main jolt. Then removed that black plastic cap. It was a hassle to remove the caliper and plastic cap of the stud but eventually with patience did it. Sprayed some wd 40 penetrating fluid on it, didn't get the job done. Instead of a propane torch I recommend using a heat gun which is much safer and gets the job done. After heating threw some more penetrating fluid on there and twisted the jolt for 3 clicks with a wrench towards right. I had the car in parking gear so 3 click are reverse, neutral and drive. Did that back and forth multiple times to get the stud bolt really smooth but bear careful don't overdo it, such that it becomes completely lose. Moved it back to the parking position and placed everything back. Hooked the battery back and tested the gear. It worked like new. Hope this helps other people as well.

if cable is free you can select gears just pushing cable in and out no need for 2 people, and the hole on the are and hole on sensor is neutral use small screw driver and line them up and everything will stay aligned and helps when reinstalling so everything stays in place. thanks video will help alot of people cause i wasnt sure if i could heat it

This is a key point I missed in my first attempt when I gained Part but lost Drive. (By the way - excellent video that worked to fix my '09 Santa Fe! Thanks so much!). The position of the cable lock-down nut is critical. Loosen everything under the hood, put the gear shift lever in Neutral, put a drill but through the "L" bracket and neutral sensor switch, THEN tighten everything up to get all your gears back after getting the transmission bolt free with a few passes of torch-oil-torque.

This method worked for me just by putting penetrating oil and worked it back and forth. I had hard time getting metal angle where cable hooks to, I couldn't get the plastic sensor off but was able to lubricant it and move in and don't of gear. My post was a 9 mil wrench.

Can the shift linkage cable (or shifter cable) cause gear timing or selection issues such as the speed measured by input shaft speed sensor to be different from the speed of the engine, and therefore TCM/PCM to report "Input Shaft Speed Sensor No Signal" error?

Your video was amazing thank you so much. My shifter is so smooth now I can barely feel it click lol. Only issue now is I can't get my key out of the ignition. It won't turn to the off position. Closest it goes it acc. Is there something maybe I'm missing or did wrong?

Happy to help! If I had to guess it would be one of two things. Either your ignition switch is bad or your neutral safety switch is bad. Again those are just guesses I have no way of knowing since I'm not looking at it but hopefully that helps a little bit. Please like the video and subscribe it really means a lot. Thank you

@Mr.McDouche wasn't the issue. Mine was the linkage needing to be sprayed. Will probably spray it again in a couple days just to keep it moving smooth. I'm sure some white lithium grease would prolly work too

I am happily Late to a party i see has been going on for a while. 06 tucson v6 has been in 2 different shops for 5 months total without xhecking this. Told I nees a new transmission. Called a trans shop, he told me this was common and to soak the mess out of it. My question for anybody is, at 4:00, is the neutral saftey switch in the park position as shown, or should it be farther to the left? I reassembled it and now it shifts really loose-- almost like slipping between gears-- but still was sticky going into park. Is this just another adjustment needed or something else? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Awesome video! That helped me a bunch! The Neutral Control switch had a pretty nice dinge from a flat head it looks and was shorting out my 05 Tibby going into limp mode, "D" was 2nd gear only. Switched that out and Bam! Fixed! Except now, when I put it in "D" it's 1st gear only and sport stick goes from "1"-"2" only and back and forth in gear. Can you help me with this?

I have a 2010 Kia forte with the same problem the car was left sitting although I can tap it back and forth with a hammer but it will not free up and I'm afraid to pull up on the shaft because I don't know if there's anything else down there I can break is it the same is what you're talking about

I'm sorry I don't know on a 2010 Kia forte if it would be a similar fix. It's probably best to contact Kia or a local mechanic see what they can do.

Im having an issue with my 06 as well. The 11mm wrench is too big and the 10 too small. I was able to turn the pin into park using the connector piece and all of my strength. Did you use an 11?

does the neutral safety switch also causes the transmission to work properly when in D for drive cause my 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7l front wheel drive only works at where the + and - to the right side and i have to manually shift it going from st gear and up or is there a button or a switch someplace to get the transmission to just use the normal rails from PRND without going to the right and using the + and - to shift like a stick i just want it to drive it only on the D for Drive like a standard automatic and not switching the + and going to the next gear + and ++ its gets goofy on me and when i apply the breaks or when it slows down it down shifts on its own and i have to manually shift it + until i get all the way up fourth gear and then i can go 45mph and higher is there a switch or button that changed the transmission from Manual to Automatic and if so where is the location if not is this a trans issue or a linkage issue?

I'm thinking you probably have more of a transmission issue (possibly a shift solenoid issue). However, you could certainly try the neutral safety switch first and see if that fixes your issue. I know in some vehicles we've had in the past you could manually shift the automatic like that and but it would not shift regularly in drive if you just put it in regular drive. We almost always had to replace the transmission because it was more cost effective then tearing it down and rebuilding it or replacing the shift solenoids.

OK I have a problem with my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe when it is cold in the morning my gears are stiff to shift, and will not engage in to drive but 10 minutes later when everything is warmed up the car shifts smoothly and it starts to drive. I am confuse. Can you help?

Hi there hopefully I can help! Just to clarify do you mean the shifter lever itself is stiff to move or the transmission acts like it does not want to shift into gear, for instance you put it into gear say drive or reverse and the car will not move.

The whole car drives perfect still no issues except my shifter auto , is Stiff and When i was on flat ground it jerked a tiny bit from park to drive but stiff from all other gears , with 81k miles

Hi, I think you are probably on the right path, it could also be the shifter inside the car. It's just hard to say without being able to look at it. The cable has a stud on it and once the nut on top is removed the stud will be free and it will drop down with the cable attached to it. Don't be scared you got this! Did you have any trouble with the alarm system with it sticking I don't know if it's a coincidence that it started sticking and know the alarm goes nuts when you hook battery up and key fob doesn't shut off alarm new battery in it

I'm sorry but I did not run into that issue. Try inserting the key in the passenger's door exterior keyhole and turning it back and forth while the alarm is going off. Sometimes this will shut the alarm off. Hope this helps!

No Manual transmissions use cables to operate the shifter mechanism. What seems to be your issue I might be able to help

Were there any symptoms before this started happening? If I remember correctly these do not have a TCM everything is controlled by the ECU.

@@TheInteriorAutoMechanic well the 96 00 gls. Says it has a tcm. I bought it cheap cause of odometer reading 111k. I figured quick replacement of input and output vss .z. I tested voltage at the harness had a voltage reading but I have no idea what pin etc. Any help with this would be great

I'm not trying to tell you what to do at all but I would not recommend driving in sport mode if you don't have to. It's not a sports car, and it's harder on an older transmission.

This is just me guessing since I'm unable to look at it. 1st check your battery terminals and grounds make sure they are not badly corroded or broken. 2nd check your speed sensors there are 2 on this transmission an input and output, I have ran into this issue before and it had bad speed sensors. 3rd possibly could be transmission control module, 4th transmission is probably bad. Hopefully this helps! Good luck!

The only thing I can think of would be to get some very good penetrating oil. My recommendation would be seafoam deep creep. I would spray that on that shaft maybe a couple times a week and see if that helps it over time.

Hi Eliad, correct me if I'm wrong but from what I'm understanding when you start the car and put it into gear it will drive and then after it warms up while you're driving it's just like it goes into neutral and will not go anywhere? Is that correct?

Yes I just replaced a speed / safety neutral sensor that is above the gear and still the phenomenon has not passed I would be happy to help with this problem at the moment the vehicle is unable to change gears@@TheInteriorAutoMechanic

It's most likely seized up you'll need to apply penetrating oil and possibly heat.

@@TheInteriorAutoMechanic don't want to use heat and melt the gear position sensor. I used freeze off and some semi light percussive action. It has started to loosen now.

Can I pick your brain!?? I just changed my MAF sensor and the whole neutral safety switch. Thought I was finally good to go, and boom. Car wont start. Now it's too late and I'm too tired to go play with it more but basically... the shifter is in park yet it says Reverse. Wth did I do wrong?! I thought I was going to be all proud of myself, figured out the problem, the part, got the DAMN bolts off... but what did I do ??!?

I would recommend checking your shifter linkage. If the lever does not move to get it out of park chances are you have a shifter linkage problem.

Why he took off the cable which connected to the radiator fan? It is so far apart from the location of the transmission.

@@kinglay8022 The reason I did that is because I didn't want to chance melting it with a blowtorch or anything like that when I heated it up. It's a whole lot easier to just pop it out of the way and make sure it won't get hot then melting it and then having to replace the plug and rewire everything. It takes two extra seconds to be careful or it can cost you a lot more time if you're not.
